The Gentleman's Daughter by Amanda Vickery 2006
One of my favourite books from the FS back catalogue is “The Gentleman’s Daughter – Women’s Lives in Georgian England” written by Amanda Vickery and published by the FS in 2006.
It is bound in metallic cloth, blocked with a design based on an 18th-century tea caddy, redrawn by Frances Button. It is housed in a pictorial slipcase.
It has 462 pages and a large number of bound in pictures that are mainly period paintings.
A very readable and interesting publication well worth seeking on the secondary market.

In the last seven and a half years, more than 400 Folio Archives book reviews have been posted on Folio Society Devotees.
This review, first posted on 17 July 2017, was effectively the first in the series, but the reviews were not called Folio Archives until review number nine.
I started by using existing photos of books, then photographing them myself. This book has been re-photographed and the new pictures added below the original review.
The original review remains unaltered except for the addition of “Folio Archives 1” before the book title.

I see this most desirable book is on eBay UK today, currently at £4.75. Amazing bargain. (The usual disclaimer).

>1 wcarter: Beautifully produced book, but I'm not at all interested in the topic. Different tastes, but certainly well done.

Just bumping this up because I received a copy of this edition yesterday in the mail. The physical volume is just as lovely as the pictures above show it as being. And of course, the work itself is eminently readable and informative. A lovely addition to my shelves.

If you think how English Georgian women played such a fundamental role in the development of the modern novel (Jane Austen, Fanny Burney, Mary Shelley etc) then this book is not quite so abstruse to book-lovers as might first appear
