An Illustrated Journey Round the World (1785 to 1794) by Thomas, William & Samuel Daniell - 2007
ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM JULY 2017
Published in 2007, the Folio Society edition of Thomas, William and Samuel Daniell’s “Illustrated Journey Round the World” stands out on the shelf because of its landscape format being 29.5cm wide and only 23cm tall.
Profusely illustrated, it is the story of the brother’s voyages from London to Canton in 1786 and return via India in 1794, when China was a very exotic and relatively unknown destination.
Housed in an illustrated slipcase, the book is bound in three quarter buckram with a front board covered in parchment that has been printed and blocked with an illustration based on one by Thomas and William Daniell.
It is a substantial volume of 329 pages, that is a very interesting read, as is any well written travel diary from 230 years ago, when life was very different to today.
The pictures below start with a clipping from the relevant Folio Society prospectus.

ADDITIONAL PHOTOS ADDED DECEMBER 2024

Very nice Warwick. Do you happen to know if the list price was USD or AUD for this volume. I haven't see this on the secondary market.

I remember choosing selections from the 2006-7 prospectus. Having finished the choices for delivery in September, December and March, I moved to the June picks of the latest Folio Poet-Yeats- and some quite amazing-looking volume on the back page, Daniell. It was stunningly the most superior book in appearance and content in the prospectus, nothing else like it, and I was pissed off that I had to wait ten months to get it. But what joy then to pull Daniell and Yeats from the box.
Nowadays it would qualify as a 'fine editon.' Although the scale is much smaller I would think that David Roberts fans might enjoy it. And as a rarity, this Folio edition is the first(only?)edition. Any other disjointed thoughts? Yes, the heavyish Lessebo paper is perfect, no complaints can be made about the lack of illustrations-almost every other page-, map endpapers and more maps, and the editor, Katherine Prior, has written an interesting narrative filled with the Daniell's own words. Over the years I've seen this book passed over on ebay at $25-50 and I've thought that people don't know what they're missing. Better late....

Inspired title to highlight here — chalk me up as another for whom this had completely escaped notice, and who has rectified the matter lickety-split.
Can be had even cheaper when searching for sellers listing it as "around" instead of "round".

Only the Folio Society can produce something like this! Or at least does.
If I didn't have so many "ahead" of it to acquire, I'd seek this out.
You do a wonderful job on your archive reports! Thank you.
Edited to add comments.

Has anyone seen Voyage Round...Great Britain? How do they compare in terms of quality and sumptuousness?

Hello, just joined the group and this is my first post. I have both books. Voyage Round Great Britain is more of a regular sized Folio, 294 pages plus Preface and Intro, with hundreds of color illustrations from the original Daniell aquatints. The paper is called Gardapat Kiara, heavy and semi-glossy, I'd say. I actually prefer the illustrations in this volume. Notes and letters from other travelers of the time are included.
