Cheating death is easy. Escaping the system is not. In the near future, immortality isn't just a dream--it's a business. And Backup, a global tech giant, holds the monopoly. By routinely uploading their memories, personalities, and every essence of who they are, the company's clients can cheat death, waking up in a new clone body after they die. But immortality comes with a price--one only the wealthy can afford. Aiden Romes is a by-the-book cop, guided by his strict moral compass, qualities that some of his less rule-bound peers might label as rigidity. His job is dangerous, and with his partner expecting their first child, the pressure is mounting. When Aiden saves the life of Backup's CEO's daughter, he's offered the ultimate reward: a free pass to immortality. He can finally protect his family while continuing the work he loves--without fear of death. But when Aiden undergoes his first backup upload, something goes horribly wrong. He awakens in an unfamiliar place, trapped in a body that isn't his. Now, he's caught in a deadly conspiracy that forces him to question everything he believes in. How far will he go to protect his family? How much of his own soul is he willing to sacrifice? And in a world where lives are endlessly replaceable, what does it mean to truly be alive? Backup is the first novel by Guy-Roger Duvert, a French filmmaker, composer, and author based in Los Angeles, to be translated into English. Best known for his acclaimed Outsphere series, which won the Amazon TV5 Monde Award in 2019, Duvert now brings readers Backup--a high-octane action thriller. The novel delves into the dangers of a near-future world while raising profound philosophical questions about a technology that scientists predict could become reality by 2050.… (more)

Review of eBook

A day like any other. In a luxurious apartment, an elegantly-dressed woman is stabbed by an intruder. In a dilapidated apartment, a young woman is held captive. And a company that can clone your body, capture your memories and personality, advertises it version of immortality, a system called Backup.

Meanwhile, police officer Aiden Romes and his partner, Natsuko, are on the trail of the kidnappers, determined to rescue the young girl. The girl who is the daughter of Backup’s founder, the one who gave the world immortality [for a hefty price that virtually ensured only the very rich would be able to afford it].

After Aiden saves Kugelman’s daughter’s life, he is offered the Backup system for free. Since his pregnant partner, Lucy, worried about the danger of police work, it seemed like a perfect solution.

What could possibly go wrong?

=========

Well-developed, believable characters populate this inventive futuristic tale of immortality. Compelling world-building is a highlight of the unfolding narrative; the plot is both clever and thought-provoking. With unexpected plot twists, readers are kept guessing as the thriller reveals the challenges of the advanced technology.

One of the major themes of this story is how society is impacted by this technology; readers will find themselves pulled into the telling of this tale from the outset and are likely to find it difficult to set this book aside before turning the final page.

Highly recommended.

“Backup” is a cyberpunk science fiction novel which follows Aiden Romes, a policeman who helps a multinational tech corporation and winds up in an unexpected predicament. This event challenges his morals and eventually puts him in a scenario he never expected could happen. I was originally attracted to this book based on the cover art and attached synopsis of the story. This was not a genre that I am particularly familiar with but I was rather surprised at how much I really enjoyed this story. The plot was interesting and one that I did not anticipate. The cast of characters were also unique yet familiar as there was a clear divide among classes as there is in society today. Overall, this was an entertaining and agreeable quick read with lots of action and unexpected happenings. ( )
