I really enjoyed this! I was a bit hesitant, given that crappy David Lynch version from the 80s. The films score was incredible. I will be watching this again.
Did anyone else see this?

I was watching the Children of Dune miniseries recently; how would you say it compared?
5clamairy
>4 -pilgrim-: I haven't watched that.

The score was good, and I thought the movie had the right feel for the book and a great cast.

I hope to watch it at some stage. The trailer looks good. I have high hopes that I will enjoy it.
10MyopicBookworm
I saw it on the big screen last week. I thought it was excellent.

I saw it in the cinema and thoroughly enjoyed it. Amazing score and great actors. Planning to see it in 3D if possible in the next few weeks.

I saw it two weeks ago at the movie theater. There were four people in the audience.
As stated above, this was much better than the David Lynch (not a relative of mine) version. Still, I left the theater feeling somewhat underwhelmed -- and it had nothing to do with the less-than-fresh popcorn.
Perhaps it was the commercials over-hyping the "chemistry" between the two main characters (Paul and Chani). And that may very well be because there was perhaps (generously) eight minutes of screen time for the latter, and even then, very little interaction between them.
It also seemed to rely more on CGI special effects than it did actual character development. And that's fine for kid's movies (Harry Potter comes to mind), but this being a more adult mind-framed movie, I found it sorely lacking.
This was just Part 1, though. I hope it ends in Part 2 because I don't think I could stand it being a theatrical trilogy. The friend I went with loved it, and will probably insist that we go see the sequel. I might, but only if they guarantee the freshness of the popcorn.

>13 suitable1: OtherHalf who hasn't read the book didn't enjoy it much, although surprisingly did manage to follow the plot better than I expected. I thought it a very good interpretation of the book not straying far from what Herbert had written. The Worms were suitably dramatic and the Ornithoptors looked great. The Mentants got short shrift.

The movie certainly stayed close to the book. Which was mostly a plus. Yeah, we didn't see enough of Chani to see any chemistry. And I'd like to have seen more of Jessica too.

>16 majkia: I know Paul had visions, but I thought it was strange that Chani just kept appearing in the distance, I guess they'll get into the relationship in the 2nd movie. Jessica too, I would think.

you really need to see it on the big screen. we watched it when it first came out and it was amazing. My dh hadnt read the book but did see the sci/fi series. He liked this very much; we are both eager for the second half.

I'm dredging up this thread because I'd like to discuss Dune II, which I finally watched last night. I actually liked this one even better than the first. I understand that the third movie will be based on the second book, Dune Messiah. Has anyone else watched this?
20cindydavid4
Ive read the first three booksof the series, and watched the two film thought both were exellent but for things and characters that were left out (Leah!) but the third one promises to sort it all out. Not sure when the new one is out need to check

>20 cindydavid4: I don't believe they've even started filming yet. Google tells me it will be out in December of 2026.

Just as an aside, the TV mini-series, Dune: Prophecy, starts on Sunday in case anybody missed it.
Set 10,000 years before the events of Dune, the series follows sisters Valya and Tula Harkonnen as they combat forces that threaten the future of humanity, and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

>22 AHS-Wolfy: I had seen the promos for that, but wasn't really paying much attention as to when it was set. Is it based on any of the more recent books by Frank Herbert's son?
24AHS-Wolfy
>23 clamairy: Looks to be based off Sisterhood of Dune but how closely I have no idea. Never read the book and haven't followed the production for this series either but there looks to be some decent people involved in the cast list so I'll give it a watch.
Oh, looks like I got my day wrong. It's actually on Monday 18th and will be airing weekly on HBO for those that have access.

>24 AHS-Wolfy: I will definitely be giving it a go. I just bought a sound bar for my TV, so I have been in search of epic movies and shows to watch that will make the best use of the new equipment. LOL

>19 clamairy: We haven't watched the 2nd movie yet, have to get to that.

I watched the first episode of the new HBO Dune: Prophecy series last night. Quite good! Great cast, especially Emily Watson.
30reconditereader
It's a great cast, but requires a vast amount of suspension of disbelief. It's pretty.

>29 clamairy: I'll be waiting to binge watch but it's good to hear initial impressions are good.
32cindydavid4
Another Dune?is it a series? I suspect people who watch it will be very confused when the third movie comes out! Is this one staying faithful to the book?
33clamairy
>32 cindydavid4: It's a prequel series, set 10,000 years before the 1st book. It's based on the Sisterhood of Dune, which I have not read.
