OT - Custom-Made Slipcase?

I have a single hardcover book for which I would like to order a nice custom-made slipcase. Can anyone suggest a US- or Canadian-based individual or company that I could contact? Thanks in advance.

I've gotten really good at them recently, PM me for details.

And there's always Google....or Duck Duck Go. Hand bookbinders. Just sayin'.

>1 DavidMF: I’m currently commissioning a clamshell box from Marc Hammonds (Hammonds Bindery) who worked with Craig Jensen at Booklab II before Craig retired. I’ve been happy with Marc’s service so far and while I haven’t seen the finished product yet, Craig says he does superb work and I’ve always been happy with Booklab II so I expect all will be well. So that may be an option for you as I expect he also does slipcases. He’s in Georgia. You can PM me for his email if you want (I worry that spam bots will pick it up if I post it).

Cloverleaf Studio in Austin, TX makes custom boxes, slipcases, and bindings. They have a $200 minimum. I believe they did the slipcases for the lettered/deluxe version of the beautiful Taller Martin Pescador's "Sir Gawain." I've not (yet) commissioned a slipcase from them, but you can see portfolios of their work on their website.

>5 DenimDan: Thanks, their work looks very nice! I see they do clamshell/solander cases as well. I've been getting those off Etsy lately, but bespoke ones would be great. I'll likely run a request by them and see what the estimate is. I suspect it's actually more cost effective than my Etsy buys.

Allow me to suggest you check out Bohemio Bookbindery. Tim does excellent work and is very reasonably priced. He does clamshells/traycases/Solander boxes (choose your term) as well.

What's the pricing for a basic cloth case? I need several for most my Subpress, and CP books.

>8 Undergroundman: I'm planning on sending a quote request to both Cloverleaf and Bohemio for two slipcases and a clamshell. I'll be happy to share what they quote me once I hear back if you like.

>8 Undergroundman: I had Tim at Bohemio do a standard cloth slipcase for a book that measured 7-1/4 x 10-1/2 x 1-1/4". He quote me (and charged) $45.00 for the slipcase and $125 for a clamshell/solander. The slipcase is well made and quite sturdy. This was in late 2019, so expect an increase due to inflation.

Wow, I can't get solanders made for less than $200 and that's just basic cloth. >11 Glacierman: thanks for the contact - thought I knew everyone in MI who was in the trade, I'll be sure to visit Tom next time I'm in A2.

> 12 You are welcome! It took me a couple of minutes to get the 'A2' reference. You'd think I would have gotten it sooner, seeing as how my wife was from Battle Creek.

>10 Undergroundman: I've sent in pricing requests to both case makers (Cloverleaf and Bohemio) for the same items - a slipcase for Foolscap's Phisicke Against Fortune and an ephemera clamshell with an 11.5 x 8.5 x 1.5 interior (the plan is to make this the dedicated Gruffyground case). I'll let you know what they quote back.

>5 DenimDan: >6 Shadekeep: My understanding was that Cloverleaf also did the binding work for the vellum edition. That was one factor that led me to commissioning a rebind and custom clamshell box from them for my dinged standard copy of Sir Gawain (which turned out great, by the way).

>15 const-char-star: Thanks for the info. I haven't heard back from either maker yet, but possibly I alienated one or both by being upfront that I am soliciting more than one maker for a quote.

Spoke too soon, I've heard back from Tim at Bohemio. He's quoting about $75 for the slipcase for Phisicke Against Fortune, and about $225 for the Gruffyground clamshell. Seems reasonable based on what I've paid elsewhere, talking with him now about color options and adding simple text to the spines.

>18 Undergroundman: Certainly! I'm working out the details with him regarding colors and so forth. Probably won't order until later, as I'm planning on moving soon and don't need stuff in transit to ambiguous locations.

I will throw in The Casemaker in Texas as a potential source of custom slipcases, for anyone looking.
