The Book of Tobit from the Apocrypha (Raven Press, 1931).

Limited to 275 copies, 5 full-page illustrations, 14 initials and 3 head-and tail-pieces, engraved on wood and coloured by hand, publisher's vellum-backed marbled boards with gilt raven design, original marbled slipcase, 8vo, 35pp. The first book produced by Horace Bray (illustrator) and Robert Maynard after they left the Gregynog Press to start up the Raven Press.

This year I've already purchased such beautiful books as Nonesuch Press' "La Divina Commedia" or Cresset Press "The Apocrypha" but the book above is probably my purchase of the year! Love it! Enjoy the pics:

It bears more than a passing resemblance to The Life of Saint David (1927), one of the most sought after Gregynog Press books, at a fraction of its cost. Highly recommended.

>12 Lukas1990: I had not seen the deluxe edition before, but I have spent some time with the regular edition of the Gregynog "St. David." I recall that one being hand-colored as well. And the typeface, Poliphilus, was a great match for that text.

>13 DenimDan: I think the difference between the regular and deluxe editions is just the binding. Will find out in the future when I get both 😈

>14 Lukas1990: Indeed, the only difference between the "regulars" and the "specials" of "St. David" is the binding. Both are hand-colored.

I visited an oldish Robert Maynard at his London offices once. The Raven Press was long gone, but he was publishing Raven Cards, about the only decently designed such things in the 1950s. I have the Raven Press Venus and Adonis.

>16 Anthony_Baker: Must have been a very pleasant meeting. I plan to acquire more Raven Press books in the future, they are very well made.
