Book about dragons with purple cover and smaller ones

I read this book about a year ago. The main character is a teenage girl, and while out in the forest she comes upon a dragon. The kingdom has never seen a dragon before, but they have seen smaller less powerful versions of dragons with no flying abilities. The king takes away the dragon to have it fight to the death against one of the less powerful ones, and the girl goes to save it. At the palace, she meets and falls in love with a teenage boy named Griffin. Griffin helps her to save the dragon. The name of the book is either the same as what the less powerful dragonlike things are or what the dragon's name is. The Mini ones are called dragon- something. I can't remember what. I want to say dragonling but that's not right.

I don't think the plot totally matches, but just in case, I'll mention
1. The Pit Dragon Chronicles by Jane Yolen
2. The Dragon Chronicles by Susan Fletcher

>5 Heath_B: Was the book new when you read it a year ago?

Maybe A Wizard Named Nell? there's a girl with small dragon pets in it (called "demidragons"), but I don't know much else about the story

>7 vorkosigan: I'm not sure. I borrowed it from a library, but now it is gone from my checkout history.

The main theme of this book is that the king is trying to kill the dragon but the main characters are trying to protect her (the dragon). I remember that the girl was able to read the thoughts of the dragon but nobody else was able to. It was something to do with her past, and her true mother. I think she was adopted or maybe taken in by her aunt and uncle?

Some overlap with Dragon's Keep by Janet Lee Carey, but it's a long shot.

I remember now that she also had a sister, but her sister and her true mother bullied her (maybe). I'm sorry, it's all coming back slowly in flashes of not very useful information.

I'm very sad that I lost this book and I really want to read it again.

She was raised with her mother and sister but then she lost her memory and found the dragon, but she had known the dragon before, and over the course of the book, she starts remembering things. The mother and sister also knew about the dragon but they hated her.

None of these quite match your description, but here's what I have thought of:
Dragonflight By Anne McCaffrey
DragonSpell by Donita K. Paul
Dragons of Wild by Ava Richardson

Maybe Dragon Slippers by Jessica Day George
Not quite it but the part about her hearing the dragon's voices is an important plot point

do „draclings“ ring a bell? Then it might be Dragon‘s Milk by Susan Fletcher
