Spanish Language Presses

Good Afternoon! I've recently gotten more into fine press books, or at least nice copies of books, and since I'm learning Spanish at the same time I was wondering whether there were any good Spanish Language Presses? Or at the very least a Folio or even Penguin cloth-bound equivalent since it seems, in my lack of experience, that hardcovers - let alone "luxury" hardcovers - are much less common in Spanish speaking countries.

The fine press business in general is a very small community of devoted book lovers.
I cant imagine, that if there would be an spanish fine press publisher, those would publish in spanish, instead of english.

Zagava for example is an German publisher, but they make books in the English tongue.

>1 jakehmurray: Tallone Editore publishes in multiple languages, including Spanish. For example: https://www.talloneeditoreshop.com/tallone/en/16-spanish

I don't know of any exclusively Spanish one, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

>2 Ragnaroek: There are, of course, a few fine presses who publish in Spanish (and German fwiw)

Two come immediately to my mind although I don‘t read Spanish. Check out Taller Martin Pescador (Juan Pascoe) and Ediciones Dos Amigos.

There are also a few bilingual editions in Spanish and English by the Limited Editions Club (Octavio Paz: Three Poems + Sight and Touch, Pablo Neruda: Heights of Macchu Picchu)

>4 SebRinelli: My god some of those Ediciones Dos Amigos are absolutely gorgeous - and pricy! Something to pine after

Although rather hard to come by, books printed by Patricio Gatti at his Imprenta Ideal in Argentina are probably about the best Spanish-language fine press books you’ll find anywhere. He was a student of Gabriel Rummonds and prints impeccably on a Washington handpress. The handful of items of his I own are stunning!

Not a Spanish-language press, but a stunning dual-language edition of 'Romance de la Guardia Civil Espanola' by Federico García Lorca, illustrated with woodcuts by Jerome Kaplan. This is the 1974 edition printed and published by the great Claire Van Vliet at her Janus Press.

I just found out about Taller Gráfica de Comala in Mexico. They don't seem to have a direct website, so I am using their Instagram link. Some lovely works here, and I have written to them inquiring about ordering from the US. Happy to share those results if anyone else is interested.

Hi

The publisher Francisco A. Colombo from Buenos Aires has some awesome books. I have a copy of _Prevaleceran Las Aguas_ and the illustrations are late 1950s spicy.

>11 BorisG: Certainly! I got a reply from Ceci there yesterday on Instagram, saying they would be happy to calculate a rough estimate for shipping to the US as well as email me a catalogue. Nothing further this morning, but if I get something I will let you know. I'd be glad to share the PDF as well if folks are interested.

Catalogue received from Taller Gráfica de Comala and quite lovely it is. I got permission from the printer to share it, so I've put it here on one of my sites for ease of download:

I have several books from Taller Graphica de Comala. They focus on Mexico’s cultural heritage so you will find books about food or UNESCO sites in vibrant colors on lovely paper. The printer is Nacho Gomez Arriola. He started out with an intaglio press but now uses a Vandercook. He uses Linotype, which is a bit unfortunate due to its limitations but it’s still certainly a press well worth exploring. There’s a photo of one of their books in Parenthesis 46, in the event you’re a subscriber.

>14 Lukas1990: I'm still weighing my final list, but given that shipping encompasses up to four books I'll likely narrow it to that many. Here are the four I'm most inclined towards at the moment:

- A cuarenta años de la fundación del Taller Gráfica de Comala
- MONARCA, el milagro de la mariposa viajera
- Consultación de los Gatos
- La Calavera Tapatía

These two are also in the running, and one may ultimately supplant the last choice above:

- Grandes Letras, las capitulares en el libro mexicano
- LA HISTORIA DEL GATO DEL PADRE TEMBLEQUE Y DE SU ACUEDUCTO, Patrimonio Mundial Unesco

I love how so much of their focus is on various UNESCO world heritage aspects of their country and region. The strong Jalisco flavor of their work is powerfully appealing.

EDIT: Was composing while >15 ChampagneSVP: was posting, nice to see we made some of the same observations!

For US customers looking to obtain books from Taller Gráfica de Comala, I received a reply from Ceci that shipping is $75 via DHL (two business days) and is the most cost effective from Guadalajara to the United States. So stack up all you want in one order when possible! I've decided to splurge on five books since the shipping is going to be that much.

The press name also yielded several hits on YouTube including this 3-minute video discussing 'letraTall' (letterpress?): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7VA1-321ac

>17 Shadekeep: Ye Gods! That moves any order I was contemplating (and I was) into the realm of the impossible. I'd have to piggy-back on someone else's order if I were to follow through.

That has become moot, however, as I decided to spend that money on other things I wanted w/o doubling the cost with excessive shipping.

But others here might wish to get up a group buy....

>20 mr.philistine: Beautiful stuff, thanks for posting! The first book (Incantations) is especially compelling to me.

Just unpacked my Taller Gráfica de Comala shipment, will share photo in the acquisitions thread. Fine books they are!
