Welcome to 2024 Category Challenge! I'll roll the dice after the rest of the challenges are selected. I'll try to adjust if difficult letters are together, but we'll see!

Yay for AlphaKit!
It's always fun to see how the pairings come out. I'm sitting here laughing at MG and wondering if we'll all read MG/middlegrade works on top of finding the letters lol.

I'll be joining in.

>1 majkia: Thanks for continuing. My immediate chore is to post the last couple of months!

>13 Tess_W: "what are the rules?"
Each month is assigned two letters. All you have to do is read a book in which some word in the author's name or title begins with the appropriate letter. You have all year to find your X and Z books because those letters are the hardest.

>13 Tess_W: You can be as strict with the KIT as you like, or as loose. I like to say there are no rules. Just two letters each month for you to do as you like.
As Keith said, the letter could be an authors first, middle or last name, the first word of a title, or any word in the title. The choice is strictly up to you.

>13 Tess_W: It's why I love this challenge. It's so easy to see whether a book fits or not while with some other challenges I find I have to read the book to see whether it fits or not (all right, not really a hardship :-) )
18MissWatson
I think I may try this next year, as it seems a very easy way to choose a book!

>18 MissWatson: I pick my other challenge books based upon AlphaKIT's letters for that month.
21KeithChaffee
>20 fuzzi: Me too! I hunt through my TBR wishlists looking to see if there might be a book that will knock off both letters at once (and found a surprisingly large number of them for this 2024 set of letters). As the various CATs and KITs are filling in their monthly challenges, I spent much of yesterday scrolling through lists muttering, "OK, I need a historical mystery with an R and an H, and it would be nice if the author were born in March...".
22majkia
>21 KeithChaffee: LOL. Y'all are far more dedicated about that than I am. Maybe I should get serious!
23KeithChaffee
>22 majkia: Well, I am a relatively slow reader, compared to a lot of folks around here. I'll probably get through about 60 books this year. So if I'm going to take part in more than one of the challenges and still have any room to read anything that's NOT challenge-driven, I have to double up. Of course, I could just ignore the challenges entirely, but I am one of those "Challenge? There's a challenge? Do say more!" people.
25LadyoftheLodge
In addition to these comments, I try to make the books I am tasked with reviewing to meet the challenges too. That helps me knock off my "to be reviewed" list. Then again, I am always trying for a "CAT trick!"

>24 JayneCM: It's always so satisfying to find a book that hits both letters! Finding an author whose first and last name begins with the two letters is more difficult.
28JayneCM
>27 VivienneR: I managed to find all the months but some of the authors I didn't really want to read. So I found myself reading books I wasn't keen on just to tick off the challenge. So I have abandoned that idea!
29VivienneR
>28 JayneCM: I keep promising myself not to do that anymore - reading books that have little attraction just to tick off a challenge. I'm really going to try better in 2024. I just need to look a bit harder for the right book.
30majkia
>29 VivienneR: I look at it this way. If its bad I Pearl Rule it and at least it's a ROOT and it's off my TBR.
31LadyoftheLodge
>30 majkia: Hooray for Pearl Rule!
32VivienneR
>30 majkia: Good idea! I'm trying to do that more often.
33jeanned
>24 JayneCM: I've done this for a couple of years. It's rare that I have to extend myself to title words, and I land on books in TBR that I might not have picked without the AlphaKIT push
