Sorry to nitpick, but the 2023 listed stated 'The list is alphabetical by press and title, and includes only books actually released in 2023, not those announced or available for pre-order in the year'. I hope all the titles you list above will be released this year but at the moment it's purely conjecture, and we're mixing preorders with actual releases.

9Shadekeep
Mar 5, 8:08 am

Thanks everyone for the updates, I'll get the list revised soon.

>8 Levin40: Yes, I thought about that. I was thinking of putting "coming in 2024" titles in italics instead, but would it be better to do it like 2023 and only put those actually released? I want this to be a useful resource, so whichever approach is preferred is the one I'll take.

An artist's book from the Heavy Duty Press, "Understanding This Book" was completed in 2023 but made available in 2024. It is difficult to summarize. Multiple sizes of handset Franklin Gothic Vandercook-printed on various Hahnemuhle papers in an edition of 18. Michael Koppa, the printer and proprietor of Heavy Duty Press, has a detailed description of the origins of the project on his website: https://heavydutypress.com/understanding-this-book/

First Bite Press, a CODEX discovery and whose first book I hope to review soon on TWBE, will be releasing Victoria: a Bedside Table Tale in the fall of 2024

15Shadekeep
Mar 5, 10:57 am

>14 jveezer: Interesting stuff. Was The Canon of Aphrodisia and the related chapbooks published last year? If so, I'll add them to that list as well.

16SebRinelli
Mar 5, 11:46 am

>10 DenimDan: Captivating stuff. Thanks for pointing to it. Do you already something from the press?

17jveezer
Mar 5, 12:16 pm

>15 Shadekeep: Yes! Her first book, The Canon of Aphrodisia was published last(this?) year. i didn't pay enough attention to the title page to notice the pub date. She had copies at CODEX and has been fulfilling orders and binding deluxes in batches.

18Shadekeep
Edited: Mar 5, 12:32 pm

>17 jveezer: Groovy, thanks! I'll get it added to the 2023 list.

The set is dang tempting, let us know when your review is up, I may plump for it myself.

19jveezer
Mar 5, 12:46 pm

>18 Shadekeep: I know. I'm definitely in for the on-going chapbook series. I REALLY want those books too...

20DenimDan
Mar 5, 1:22 pm

>16 SebRinelli: I have a few of his books. A slightly more traditional one is "Typesetting on a Winter's Afternoon," which reprints a story originally published in "Parenthesis" 3 (1999). It's a wonderful meditation on setting type, life's quiet moments, the value of our time. It is definitely an artist's book, but one that also appeals to those who prefer a story in their books! I highly recommend it.

I also have some cool, weird ones: "Alchemy" in which Koppa handsets all of the Sparta that he has on hand before putting it in the hellbox. It is wild. I own his "8TBags" (8 tea-bags, 80 bags), which seems like a curiosity at first but reveals itself to be an imaginative type-specimen, with commentary on environmental issues as well.

21Shadekeep
Mar 5, 5:13 pm

>19 jveezer: Just a side note, I'd like to say how the two author bios under The Canon of Aphrodisia show off one of the reasons I favor women authors. Hers is pithy, humorous, and has just enough background to give her authorial heft. His is so jammed with résumé details that I wonder if he has a terminal case of imposter syndrome. I guess I find it more interesting to read an author whose personal synopsis is "I have lived and considered things" rather than "I have done things".

Mar 5, 7:11 pm

>1 Shadekeep: Please consider adding "Pastoral Elegies" from Barbarian Press.

24Shadekeep
Mar 5, 9:44 pm

>23 vadim_ca: Happy to do so, thanks! I've also added their title Bordering on the Sublime, which they are going to try to bring out this year. Wish I could justify that one, I do love ornaments.

25Nightcrawl
Mar 5, 10:08 pm

Nawakum should be releasing “A Bonsai-Shaped Mind & Postures of the Heart” this year.

27Levin40
Mar 6, 3:00 am

>9 Shadekeep: Yes, I would certainly recommend to at least distinguish titles that have actually been released, and preferably have separate lists. I thought the 2023 list was clear and useful: this one less so, as it includes pre-order titles and titles which have not even reached pre-order yet (e.g. The Wizard of Oz). Knowing what I do about the fine press world I'd be willing to bet that a fair number of the titles you list will not be released in 2024.

Anyway, a few more titles which are on the way but not yet released:
- No Reply Press: the 'big three''
- St James Park Press: The Beauty of Byrne
- Curious King: Hyperion, Before They Are Hanged
- Consensus Press: Sinuhe (??)

28Chemren
Edited: Mar 6, 8:57 am

>27 Levin40: I like the list as it currently is - a single reference for things to look out for, both upcoming and in print. I recommend a sort in December into Levin40's two lists. The previous thread had the advantage of starting late in the year, so wasn't as forward looking.

Edit: Just saw the edit to the first post following Levin40's recommendation. The split works for me too.

29Shadekeep
Mar 6, 8:59 am

>27 Levin40: >28 Chemren: Ah, well, I've just split the list into two, Released and Forthcoming. Let's run a quick poll and see what folks prefer, I'm happy to oblige.

Vote: I prefer two separate lists of titles.

Current tally: Yes 19, No 0

30Levin40
Mar 6, 9:52 am

>29 Shadekeep: Thank you. I think it's perfect like that.

A few more forthcoming just came to mind:
- Ampersand Studios: Master and Commander (should be summer)
- Hand and Eye: The Woman in White (late this year maybe)
- Tudor Black Press: Prometheus the Firegiver

31Glacierman
Mar 6, 10:11 am

I question including Consensus Press' Sinuhe as that item, when finished, will not be available to the public at large, it being a members-only publication. OTOH, if the goal is to catalogue ALL forthcoming fine press publications, public or private, then including it is apropos.

32Shadekeep
Mar 6, 10:12 am

>31 Glacierman: Yes, I like the list to be as inclusive as possible. Helps capture how vibrant and active the fine press world remains.

33Nightcrawl
Mar 6, 10:47 am

>27 Levin40: St. James Park Press is also currently in the process of shipping “Animal Farm”…was mentioned in the SJPP thread, but I don’t know if anyone has actually taken delivery of their copy yet.

Added Ecclesiastes from Sutton Hoo Press to the forthcoming list. Chad tells me that printing is complete and he's trying to secure a binder.

Also, Heavenly Monkey has an update on The Dunwich Horror coming soon.

36ChestnutPress
Mar 13, 10:17 pm

>35 Shadekeep: Those two books are pretty much guaranteed to be top-tier productions, as both Chad and Rollin do exceptional work.

43NathanOv
Edited: Mar 14, 2:25 pm

>42 Dr.Fiddy: I think they've stated they plan to revisit letterpress printing with future editions. In my opinion, that makes the decision to do The Starless Sea offset with different tiers that will be forever mismatched even more bizarre.

44Dr.Fiddy
Edited: Mar 14, 2:31 pm

>43 NathanOv: I hope they will get back to letterpress. However, I noticed that the pricing of the Vampire editions all match the pricing of the Starless Sea editions. So, I guess letterpress is further into the future...

I've added placeholders for Suntup's forthcoming announcements of their May and June titles, both of which they've stated as being letterpress in all editions. Given their production cycle it's possible one or both may not be released this year, but for now we'll track them here.

47Shadekeep

Prospectus is up for Nawakum's next book. The middle tier (Deluxe Edition) ticks the boxes for me.

https://www.nawakumpress.com/book-collection/a-bonsaid-shaped-mind

51NathanOv
Mar 28, 11:37 am

>50 LBShoreBook: An interesting and exciting detail hidden in the prospectus: The book contains a four-color letterpress printed centerspread by Rebecca Chamlee, of Pie in The Sky Press, who created another incredible book on trees, "Giant: A Deity With Leaves."

52EdmundRodriguez
Mar 28, 11:44 am

>50 LBShoreBook: The deluxe does look very nice. However, as embarrassing as it is to admit, I think the landscape format puts me off.

53Nightcrawl
Mar 29, 4:22 pm

>50 LBShoreBook: The Deluxe certainly feels the most harmonious given the content. How long do we think this publication will take to sell out?

54LBShoreBook
Mar 29, 8:25 pm

>53 Nightcrawl: I am not sure, he indicated maybe 90 days before he begins shipping, currently at binder. He is exhibiting at the NY book fair next week and that may generate interest. I am guessing the price point will result in sales over a few months versus days but I put in a deposit to make sure I got one.

55NathanOv
Edited: Mar 29, 9:25 pm

>53 Nightcrawl: >54 LBShoreBook: This one's at a much higher price point and the limitations are different, but I believe the deluxe of Descent Into The Maelstrom sold out within a couple weeks, while I did not notice the standard had sold until browsing the site just recently.

I would not be surprised if they hang on to copies of this one, particularly the engraver's edition, for a couple years.

56What_What
Mar 30, 6:22 am

>55 NathanOv: There are also quite a few copies of the engraver edition. I’m surprised they made that many (22, 25, 30 for the Engraver, Deluxe and Standard), but I don’t have a reference point for the Cascadia numbers.

57mnmcdwl
Mar 30, 8:53 am

>50 LBShoreBook: The deluxe edition ticks all boxes for me too. The price is a bit of a stretch for me, but since it is rare for books to fit so squarely into my collecting interest (books about Japan, books about nature, engravings by Richard Wagener) I put down the deposit for it. Now it's just being patient for it to arrive...

58Sport1963
Mar 30, 4:38 pm

>56 What_What: David Pascoe is a smart operator. Nawakum has a healthy number of institutional clients (SMU- Bridwell, Morgan Library, U of Texas - Ransom Center, etc.) that will most likely have already committed to the Engraver. I wouldn't be surprised if that edition quickly sells out.

On a related note, for anyone in the Seattle-Tacoma area, if you haven't visited the Pacific Bonsai Museum in Federal Way, WA, you should do so. You will quickly spot some of the trees featured in the prospectus. The challenge is finding a sunny day in the Spring to visit!

73Nightcrawl
Apr 23, 1:21 pm

>72 LBShoreBook: Thanks! I haven’t heard of any of those past winners, but the fact that St. James Park Press 1984 was only a runner up last year says a lot.

Incidentally, I just received my copy of SJPP Animal Farm yesterday and couldn’t be happier with it, so I know a major production like 1984 has to be award worthy.

"I haven't heard of any of those past winners, but the fact that St. James Park Press '1984' was only a runner-up last year says a lot."

It says more about the judges than the aesthetic merit of these books. The same can be said of the judges and judging for the Alcuin Awards in Canada.

Not fine press, but Centipede Press is releasing Ghost Story soon. In a macabre-but-appropriate touch, the books are posthumously signed by Peter Straub. I believe Jerad had signed sheets on hand in planning for this book, which for whatever reason didn't make it out while Straub was alive.

Sales were open to newsletter subscribers first and all 500 copies sold out in the first day, so this never reached a broader public offering.

I absolutely love the illustrations in Muttons & Nuts Velveteen Rabbit, but the book traumatized me so badly as a child that I don't think I want it on my shelf! Gorgeous work, though.

96Shadekeep
May 21, 1:52 pm

>95 ambyrglow: Aye, a number of childhood things are surprisingly upsetting. Even the song "Puff the Magic Dragon" made me cry as a child. I'm hoping I can enjoy the book for its craftwork, and maybe the contents won't be so distressing now.

One childhood-related book I'm very much looking forward to is Incline Press's treatise on Punch & Judy. I'll get it on the list once more details solidify.

97Glacierman
May 21, 10:39 pm

>96 Shadekeep: Yeah...as a kid, I hated Old Yeller. Jan hated it too, as well as Where the Red Fern Grows. I still intensely dislike Old Yeller.

98Shadekeep
May 22, 8:23 am

>97 Glacierman: I feel ya, mate. In dog-related stories, the song Shannon by Henry Gross still upsets me to listen to. It's interesting how potent this stuff is to a young mind which knows so little of the world. I understand the desire of some authors to prepare children for loss and horror, but for some it can also be a case of too much too soon. I have no idea how modern kids navigate the emotionally overloaded media landscape now without becoming callous to it all.

Just received the Prospectus for Moving by Hilary Paynter, to be published by Nomad Letterpress later this year with a target shipping date of September.

The book will feature 35 wood engravings by Hilary Paynter all printed from the original blocks and with explanatory text by the artist. The sample double-page spread of Herculaneum in the prospectus is superb. 165 copies in total split between A, B and C editions. Page size is 35 x 28 cm.

Sep 24, 9:55 pm

>188 Lukas1990: Ach, sorry! I'll ask Geert to run them all under powerful UV lighting before sending them out. 😉

>189 drizzled: ChestnutPress has nailed the answer. For myself I tend to pick up whichever version strikes my fancy aesthetically, because the printing is always top-notch at every tier. Though if he does a deluxe of this one that will very likely be my go-to, as it's powerfully tempting to have a premium edition of this title from his hand.

If you'll indulge me in an aside, let me say that I can wax pedantic for ages about the differences between a $20 bottle of wine and a $200 bottle of wine. Both may please in their fashion, but in my experience there is a litany of contrasts between most of them at those price points. Yet if you ask me to compare a $200 bottle and $600 bottle, I can detect the differences but it's paradoxically much harder to put into words. It becomes more of a matter of finely grading degrees of excellence at that point. The best I can do is say "you'll know the difference when you taste it". And in my opinion, Geert's work is a $600 bottle.

>194 LBShoreBook: Probably no better than a coin toss would. I could say which I consider superior, but it wouldn't necessarily be the $600 bottle. But whether I can blind-discriminate wine is somewhat missing the point of the digression. What I'm trying to emphasise is that evaluating the merits of various things eventually reaches a level where one is discerning between minute degrees of excellence. There is naturally a measure of subjectivity at work, with everyone finding certain printers (or wines) to jibe with their own standards of excellence.

PS - I'm not a special fan of chardonnay (much prefer viognier or seyval blanc), but the $200-range Kistler Chardonnay is perhaps the most exquisite white wine I've had. I would easily class it as a $600 wine myself and wouldn't feel cheated if that were the going price.

Shadekeep Thanks for maintaining this brilliant Fine Press resource!

Regarding the Old School Press Plates for a Herbal, am I understanding correctly that they have taken pulls of 12 plates, but - due to the limited number of pulls they are allowed to take for each plate - each copy of the book will have 5 of these, therefore the 75 copies will have different combinations of the plates included?

But it sounds like the book itself will have the essays for all 12 plates. So does that mean there will be essays for which there won't be a corresponding plate to look at? Or perhaps each copy of the book only contains only 5 essays. I feel like I'm misunderstanding something.

It looks like an amazing book, and the video showing how the plates are being printing is fascinating. Very labour intensive! I can't believe they found these beautiful copper plates being used as a counterweight for a lift.

206Shadekeep
Edited: Oct 7, 9:13 am

>205 GardenOfForkingPaths: My pleasure! And yes, good questions.

My expectation is that each volume will have a somewhat random selection of 5 plates out of the 12 pulled, which are included in a wallet rather than being bound in the book. Given that, I would expect the book to be identical in each case, rather than pared down to just the essays that match the included prints. The essays can be illuminating on their own as well, I imagine. Possibly there will be a facsimile spread within the book of all 12 plates, not pulled from the originals but included in facsimile in order to illustrate the essays. That seems conceivable too. I will reach out to Martyn and find out a proper answer.

Barbarian Press has posted that Bordering on the Sublime is going to slip into 2025, and very likely the latter part of the year. Their remaining release this year will instead be An Eye Made Quiet. Also slated for 2025 is A Scanty Plot of Ground. I may get the 2025 thread going, since there are other announcements stacking up for the coming year and some of the ones listed here will probably be moving over to that list as well.

>207 GardenOfForkingPaths: Here's the reply I received from Martyn:

Correct. Five randomly chosen plates in each copy. The descriptions of all the plates in each copy. Each description can be read usefully without the accompanying plate though of course it does make some reference to it. The idea of reproductions of the other seven is an interesting one and I'll think about it. It would be important to get the appropriate quality.

So while it sounds like the original approach is just to retain all essays and the included plates, there's now a possibility of some kind of repro of the others as well. We'll see how the project evolves!

Edited: Oct 8, 8:22 am

>209 Shadekeep: Cool, thanks for the update! I can see how the essays would still be interesting without the plates, but it would certainly be a nice bonus to see them all. It would be fun to compare the repros with the real thing too.

Prufrock Revisited

What do y'all think, should it go on the list even though it was a private job?

Vote: Include Prufrock Revisited and any other private works on the list?

Current tally: Yes 1, No 10
"Private works" in this case refers to works which were printed by the press but not offered for sale. Sinuhe from Consensus Press isn't quite the same, as there was a chance to obtain it during the initial period, even though it is not being sold after that point.

The Gaspereau Press “Type Bountiful” has now been released.
Type Bountiful
by Andrew Steeves with six wood engravings by George Walker

Type Bountiful celebrates the present-day abundance of type and digital typographic tools by placing it into historical context, demonstrating how the mechanization of typesetting through the late 19th and early 20th centuries set the stage for the typographic plenitude of the digital era. Drawing upon three decades of experience working with many generations of typographic tools, the author provides a thumbnail history of type’s transition from handcraft to industrial to digital mode, comparing and contrasting various methods of type production and composition. At the heart of this story of technological change resides the enduring influence of human spirit. This essay on typographic bounty will be the last limited-edition letterpress book that Andrew Steeves will produce under the Gaspereau Press imprint.
This book was composed on a Model 31 Linotype in 12 point Palatino and printed from the metal on a Vandercook cylinder press. The text paper is Arches Johannot, mouldmade in France. The six illustrations were engraved on maple blocks by George Walker and printed on Gampi Itaboshi handmade paper. The press sheets were folded to make 64 pages (plus the six engravings on Gampi Itaboshi and the doubled endpaper sections); the book measures roughly 9.5 × 6 inches. The sheets were folded, handsewn and casebound, grey cloth over boards. The book comes housed in a black cardstock phase box. All tasks, other than the engraving, were carried out by Andrew Steeves.

There are also, of course, plenty of titles already listed as 'forthcoming' for 2024 which will not ship until next year; I suppose those should be transferred to the 2025 sheet at the end of the year.

New release from Taller Gráfica de Comala - Tequila, Charro y Mariachi

Here is the machine-translation (DeepL.com) of the announcement:

Tequila, Charro y Mariachi
~ Mexico's iconic triad ~
Research, text and engravings by Nacho Gómez Arriola
Our new hand-stamped publication on the icons of Mexicanness!
As part of the Mexican “nationalism” cultural movement, some elements of popular origin were recovered and vindicated. Among them are tequila, the charro and the mariachi, which have stood the test of time as elements of national identity. A triad of symbols that little by little took on the characteristics of Mexican icons in our country and abroad.
It contains a book printed by hand on handmade paper made of DePonte cotton, Murillo Fabriano, and agave fibers, with 30 pages in 8° vertical format (13.5 x 23 cm) with hard cover and a folded concertina with 8 original engravings printed on Fabriano Única paper. It was composed manually with movable type and on our Intertype C-4 linotype machine as well as on a Ludlow type foundry. There are 20 original engravings carved on different types of linoleum. This edition is limited to only 140 signed and numbered copies.

The Prototype Press has published an edition of The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula K. LeGuin with a series of carvings by Heather Bryant.
The Prototype Press publication was printed in an edition of 28 copies. Five cases of 24pt Goudy Text were cast fresh for the project. The choice of blackletter, along with the type size and the layout, all aim to give the reader a sense of biblical reverence. The book is bound in full hot pink goat leather, made special for the edition. Matched with the bright white handmade paper from Saint Armand, and the pitch black printed text and carvings, the hot pink leather is intended to be beautiful, visceral and unsettling, much like the city of Omelas. The book is housed in a hinged black book box with lock and key. Unless a reader is visiting, it must always be kept locked. Cast, printed and bound by the press. Each copy is signed by the artist.

Notwithstanding how much I wish this wasn’t the go-to Le Guin story for publishers to focus on, I just don’t see how a single design, typography or printing decision here fits the text

Combine that with the fact that the publisher seems to mistakenly think it’s one of her Hainish stories, and I’m wondering if they read this fairly short text all the way through at all.

I don't see Pennyroyal's Billy Budd on the forthcoming or released but my copy arrived today, so confirming it's released. And gorgeous.

Actually, The Alchemist is not a Lyra's Classics title. It will be published under Lyra's Press.

I've received a nicely printed prospectus for The Ones Who Walk Away and will happily forward it to someone that wants it in the USA. Send me a PM if interested.

Thanks. While I try to track all releases as best I can, I make no pretense as to being complete or infallible. The involvement of the community is invaluable to maintaining a thorough list.

>296 jdanielpowell: Unlike others I sort of like the use of blackletter, here, and I'm intrigued by the one illustration we see. But the hot pink leather, at least as photographed, looks neither beautiful, visceral, nor unsettling, and while I understand what they're going for with the lock and key, the implementation leaves something to be desired. I want something more aesthetic on a $1,500 book than a lock that I could pick up for $3.99 at the hardware store down the street.

>278 EdmundRodriguez: enabled - I’d missed this production so thank you (and others) - low limitation, ‘proper’ paper, original illustrations and letterpress for basically 200 quid! Happy Christmas 🤶😁

Just came across an interesting fine press title, Absorbed by the Beauty. It's a selection of tulip photos and text by Britt Willoughby, printed and bound by Katie Beard of Rooksmoor Press. A good example of the kind of thing that attracts me to fine private press work.

"The curious case of Benjamin Button" should be moved to the "released" list. I just received mine.

>311 Ragnaroekk: I like Dave McKean's art so this purchase was a no-brainer for me. The book feels really nice. The binding and printing are excellent, as you'd expect. In short, very pleased with the result.

I believe Arion's Kindred has already been released, and I received notice that Fables of Aesop will be shipping out early next week. So likely "released" in 2024, though maybe not in many peoples' hands.
