WORK IN PROGRESS!!!

2024's theme is a return to an old favorite of mine, Chicken Soup With Rice by Maurice Sendak. All the pictures are scans from my original 1968 copy.

Inside cover of my copy of Chicken Soup With Rice: notice the little picture taped/pasted on the page...the Weekly Reader had included that picture of the author on the order form, and suggested that it be cut out and added to the front page as seen here. I was in Third Grade, and thought it was a nifty idea.
I have the 75 and 100 books read challenges planned as usual:

This past year I fell WAY short, only read and ROOT'd about 25 books. More await my attention, so I'm going to try it again, but at a more modest challenge of 50.

I'm not retired, and spent a couple days during the Christmas shutdown to come in to my office and FILE. And purge the files. And shred.
Now that my dh is on Medicare and SSDI I have tons of papers the government regularly sends me that I need to keep, and be able to produce on demand, argh.
I have a cabinet (2 drawer) that has junk in it (it's a good place to stuff things I can't find a place for), and a file box with lots of pretty folders with names already added. I was GOING to get some of that done over Christmas, nope. And then New Year's weekend. Nope.

>1 fuzzi: Oh, I love "Chicken Soup With Rice." What a great idea as a theme!
We had it as part of the Nutshell Library (with Alligators All Around, One Way Johnny and Pierre):

And somehow, way back in my memory, I think we had cassette tapes of someone reading the stories with a Mozart quartet (or quintet?) playing in the background. Once in a while I hear that piece and it brings it all back! This was 40 years ago, of course, when my boys were little.

I just went over my reads in 2023, not a 5 star in the bunch!
But I did have a few
star reads:
Anne's Tragical Tea Party by Kallie George
Jubal Sackett by Louis L'Amour - reread
Anne Arrives by Kallie George
Anne's Kindred Spirits by Kallie George
I also had a lot of
star reads, too many to list then all here.
However, here's a sampling:
Dogs of War by Adrian Tchaikovsky
The Little Books of the Little Brontes by Sara O'Leary
One Morning in Maine by Robert McCloskey
To Serve Them All My Days by RF Delderfield
The Moorchild by Eloise McGraw
Listening Woman by Tony Hillerman
Dot For Short by Frieda Friedman - reread
The Red Shoes by Eleri Glass and Ashley Spires
And several books by CJ Cherryh in the Foreigner series
You can see them ALL here, with ratings and reviews:

I stalled on the Avi book. It's well-written, but I've never been a fan of Poe, and I'm not in the mood for a murder mystery type of story.
Last night I didn't want to start my Adrian Tchaikovsky book, The Bear and the Serpent. I felt I needed some sort of comfort read, familiar story, and I decided to read Rimrunners by CJ Cherryh. Yeah, Bet!
I'm going to stop at the library on the way home for some Patricia Maclachlan books I requested, will most likely read those in the next couple of days. I need something "light".

Update: Avi book discarded as a DNF. I just couldn't get into it, weird and dark. I'm not a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, anyway.
Rimrunners turned out to be just what I needed, and I enjoyed my reread.
I got three Patricia MacLachlan books from the library. All three were good but the best one was good enough to order for my granddaughters, Nora's Chicks.
And a copy of What You Know First arrived, was read, and I almost cried. It's definitely going to the Grands.

>74 SilverWolf28: thank you for your faithfulness!
It's April, gardens and newly hatched chicks are keeping me very busy, not to even mention 40 hours a week full time employment, AND yard work. I'm usually too tired to read after I come in, sometimes I am too tired to eat.
Once the heat arrives I'll be inside more. And hopefully reading.

Newly hatched chicks! How lovely (though I bet they keep you on your toes!). I wish you all the energy you need to get through this to a quieter time.
77MrsLee
>75 fuzzi: Except for the 40 hour workweek, it sounds like the best kind of busy. :) Enjoy your chicks and garden.

I don't have a garden thread this year, so I'll place this here:

This is a garden that I created this Spring. There used to be two Rose of Sharon trees next to the house, but they died. You can still see a couple stumps that are resisting removal, but they'll rot on their own soon enough.

>102 fuzzi: Looks nice! Is that a young clematis climbing the trellis?
104fuzzi
>103 Karlstar: thank you! Yes, it's a clematis, and it supposedly will be red. The bugleweed growing around the clematis have blue flowers.

>105 Alexandra_book_life: thank you, very much. I have one clematis on the east side of the house, but it only has a couple blooms on it each Spring. It probably doesn't get enough sun.

>102 fuzzi: I love clematis! Unfortunately, they are toxic to cats so I don’t have one in my yard. That’s a pretty area you’ve made.
108hfglen
>102 fuzzi: Among the few missable things I left behind when moving from Pretoria to Durban were two wild species of Clematis, one a climber and the other free-standing. The climber would be in fruit (a mass of small seeds with long white hairy styles) about now, looking like mist or wisps of wool on trees or fence lines.
