I always read quite a few of these every year, and call it my 'doorstop' challenge. So far this year, I've read:
1. Wilkie Collins – The Moonstone 571p
2. David Treuer – The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee 526p
3. Dorothy Sayers – Gaudy Night 591p
4. Les & Tamara Payne – The Dead Are Arising 601p
5. Wilkie Collins – The Woman in White 672p
6. Tom Beaujour & Richard Bienstock – Nöthin’ But a Good Time 549p
7. Dorothy Sayers & Jill Walsh – Thrones, Dominations 527p
8. Daniel Brown – Facing the Mountain 558p
9. Anthony Doerr – Cloud Cuckoo Land 637p
10. Rachel Khong – Real Americans 610p
11. Walt Whitman – Leaves of Grass 618p
I'm currently reading Erik Larson's The Demon of Unrest @565p. Right after that will be Chris Whitaker's All the Colours of the Dark @586p.
When I have a doorstop read, I tend to divide the #pages by #days I want to devote to it. Most of the time, that's 5-7 days. So the Whitaker will mean reading ~84 pages per day if it's a 7-day read. Meanwhile, I read other books that I can wrap up more quickly.
Of course, if a doorstop hits all my sweet spots, then I'll ditch the per day plan and read it straight through. Most of the time, though, I'm content to have the 'backburner' chunky book to keep things interesting.
