We have unexpected lost one of our own.
rosalita (Julia) has died and she was planning to join us again in the challenge to read our ROOTS.
I would love to see us pay tribute to her by reading a book from her TBR list. Her To Read collection has a list of 1,044 books. I'm sure that we can find a book to read in her honor.
I am creating a ticker here for us. Last year her goal was 48 ROOTS - I will round this goal to 50.
Here is a link to rosalita's list to save time.

Please let us know if you read a book for her. Don't count it told your goal, put it toward hers.

This is such a great idea. I will look through her books and pick one to read ❤️

This is a great idea!! Thanks Cheli.
It looks like I own at least a half dozen books on her TBR list so I'll pick one of those.
I met her at an LT meet up at Mark’s house about 10 years ago and enjoyed talking with her.
Just couldn’t believe this news.

I've identified 18 books in Julia's "To Read" collection that are in my "To Read" collection--a couple I was planning to get to this year anyway. So I am in good shape, and hope to read at least 2 or 3.
And I might re-read The Woman in White, since I know she was thinking about reading that one.

I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. She was always nice. I'll see what I have from her listing.

I've got a copy of Childhood's End, so I think I will try to read that, when I can find a spot to fit it in. There are some others on her list that I have and may also try to read later in the year.
9Robertgreaves
I am currently reading a book from her TBR list, The Hangman's Daughter by Oliver Pötzsch

I will read Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club. It's set in outstate Minnesota where I live (aka NOT Minneapolis/ St Paul!). I am near Lake Superior and have good friends who live in the Lakeside neighborhood (not the actual setting of the book) and whose father actually ran a restaurant, so this seems a perfect choice to honor her.
Thank you for this beautiful idea. Just before reading this I was contemplating my desire to finish my projects before it's too late.

I'm in too, and reading Trots en vooroordeel but now I'm thinking she already might have read that one.
12connie53
And I was right. But I found one on her TBR that's also on my TBR and will not count as a ROOT for me.
De vervlogen helft by Britt Bennett. So I will start that one today.

The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams

ETA one more:
Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection by Geno Auriemma

I have dozens of books that are on Julia's TBR, and I can't make up my mind...but I will get to some of them.
27cbl_tn
I am so shocked and saddened by this news. I have several books from Julia's TBRs in my TBRs and I've made a list of several to try to read this year. One that was already on my list for a challenge later in the year is Home by Marilynne Robinson. It's set in Iowa, where Julia lived. I think Julia's Kitchen Wisdom is also a must-read.
28karenmarie
Julia and I have 765 books in common in our catalogs.
In honor of our shared love of detective stories, I will read Crime Beat.

I just finished Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club from rosalita's To Read list, for her ROOT ticker. I had never heard of this author and thoroughly enjoyed a read set in my home state. There's a little thrill every time he talked about the many places I know. He also captured the feeling of Up North very well.
32Jackie_K
I haven't managed to go all the way through Julia's to read list there, but I did spot The Bullet That Missed. I hope to get that from the library this year, so will contribute it to the total. I'll check through the rest of the list later and see if there are any others that I could read.
I love this idea, and I can't help feeling that Julia would have been really chuffed at the thought of it.

33Jackie_K
OK, I've checked the rest of the list. I saw quite a few I've already read, and several which would still be ROOTs for me; however I will also try to read Longitude (my husband has a copy of this, I think), and when I need a light read I will try to also get to Winnie the Pooh. Neither of these will be ROOTs for me, so I'll be glad to contribute to Julia's total.
34SilverWolf28
I'm going to read Silver in the Wood.
35LadyBookworth
I'm going to read The Institute by Stephen King.
36Henrik_Madsen
What a nice thing to do. I went through Rosalita's TBR-list and there were a lot of books I have already read, even more I want to read, and some which are waiting patiently on my shelves:
Wilkie Collins: The Woman in White
Colson Whitehead: The Underground Railroad
Hilary Mantel: Bring up the bodies
William Styron: Sophie's Choice
Mark Twain: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
I'll read one of them eventually.

Hello all - I found this memorial for my old friend Julia and wanted to tell you all that it brought me to tears. Julia and I had been IRL friends since about 1994 and she often tried to get me to switch to LibraryThing from my corporate-owned book cataloguing platform. I wish I had done it before now, when it will be in memory of rosalita instead of along with her. I have been listening to lots of Bruce Springsteen in her honor - and now will also choose some of her to-be-read list for my 2024 reading. I love seeing this vibrant community that she was a part of and so loved. Cat

Greetings, all. I somehow just noticed this thread, and I think it's a wonderful idea. I mentioned this on her own thread right after we learned of her passing, but two days before that I had put a book in the mail to her. It was a collection of YA short stories about sports that I'd read, enjoyed and reviewed. When Julia came on to say it looked like fun, I offered to send it to her, and she sent me her mailing address via PM. Of course, it took me a week or so to get around to putting the book in the mail, a fact I now regret.
I decided to choose a book from the 137 that we shared in our LT libraries. I used a random selection website, which provided the number 21. The twenty-first book on our "shared" list is Homage to Catalonia, which I've always meant to read but haven't. So thanks, Julia, for reminding me to read Orwell's famous memoir of the Spanish Civil War.

Am I wrong in believing that a book read for Rosalita, can't count for your own ROOT total?
77laytonwoman3rd
>76 connie53: I don't see the point of a rule like that. It doesn't take anything away from the memorial intent of choosing a particular book if you also count it in your own totals. I count any book I read in all categories it fits in.

78kac522
>77 laytonwoman3rd: I think the intent is to only count a book once in the grand "ROOTS" total. If it is counted as read for Rosalita (and added to her ticker) AND by the actual reader (and added to that person's ticker), then it gets counted twice in the overall ROOTs total, even though it's only been read once, by one person.
79laytonwoman3rd

80cyderry
>76 connie53: >78 kac522: Kathy is right. If you count a book read for Julia in your totals then we shouldn't count it in her totals too.
Reading a book for Julia is like a gift - you took care of it and gave it to her. I've read 2 books from her TBRs and didn't count them on my totals. If you see that someone else read the same book as you, then it would be okay to count it in for you because the book has already been counted. That's why I'm leaving a list at the top of the thread so you can see what's been read for Julia. It's not to stop you from that reading book, it's just to make it so that book gets counted only once. The first person reading won't count it in their ROOTS but the following reader(s) can.
Does that make sense?

My two cents is that everybody should just decide this question for themselves.
In my own case, I chose the book I'm going to read for this tribute from the books on the linked list that Julia and I shared. I'll be reading it now, rather than at some unknown time in the future, for that reason: the desire to read a book that she and I both had on our TBR lists. It's a tribute to her because it is on her TBR list and it is a root for me because it is on my shelf. I hope that's cool with the group. Cheers!

We could use the List feature to make a list of books read from Julia's TBRs. Anyone can add to lists. We just need to be sure that it's clear that books should be added to the list only after they've been read.
90cyderry
I think that the easiest way for us to show that we have read a book for Julia is to insert a tag - READFORJULIA - that way we can just search on the tag to see what is done.

so it looks like there is agreement to add a tag READFORJULIA when you have finished a book for rosalita (Julia).

I finished The Backworlds by M. Pax today. I wish I could say that it was worth the read, but I ended up giving it 3 stars. Since I was reading it in honor of Julia, I do not begrudge the time.

I have finished Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, and tagged it as suggested.

I have just caught up on these messages and although I have just finished Cat's Eye by Margaret Atwood, I now realsie that I can't count this in both Rosalita's thread and my own. So I have rethought which books I will read for her. So I will count Cat's Eye in my own thread and have chosen a book off her TBR that is in my library wishlist. I am currently reading Spring by Ali Smith for Julia. I also see that two of my brother's books which he has lent me, are on her TBR, so will hopefully get to both of those in the coming months.

Hello Chèli and all...
I came by for a look at ROOTS today because I followed fuzzi's link from Roni's Decluttering group.
So sad that Julia passed away, especially since I often agreed and enjoyed so many of her posts. I think we had similar reading tastes, because I had many rosalita BB's, most of which I've read now.
My choice is to read Sally Hepworth's book, The Soulmate.
I already have a hold request at our PL, since I enjoyed two of her earlier novels. The Younger Wife was actually one of my "rosalita BB's".
I don't have my own Talk thread this year and I have never joined the ROOTS group, so here's my quandary: Do I sign up for the ROOTS group?
I don't aim to fulfill a ROOTS challenge, so can I simply add my title(s) read to the memorial list? and you (Chèli) will update the ticker?
I've culled my bookshelves thoroughly over the last 3 (pandemic) years ~ having either now read everything or traded the unread TBRs that I owned. There came a point where I was actively avoiding a rather overwhelming (to me) pile.
Pandemic reading had a silver lining because our PL's were closed for so long and I read about 200 of my TBR's. In my personal log (not on LT), I either DNF'd or gave away about 100 books. Being a great fan of our public library and about 70% of my reading now is either PL loans or borrowed from friends.
I starred this topic, so I can follow along with what's happening.

I did not know Rosalita/Julia at all, but she has a lot of great books on her to be read list! I think I would have enjoyed meeting her if I had had the chance.
I will read The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, gene editing, and the future of the human race
For those of you who knew Julia, I am sorry for your loss, and I hope this lovely idea gives you some comfort.

Edited to say, thanks ~ it is marked as #21. I'll look through the TBR list again for another title and see if I can contribute again to the Rosalita-read-a-thon.

Because I have fond memories of our shared Dick Francis reads a few years back, I searched Julia's TBR for books by Dick Francis. I did read For Kicks in Dutch translation and tagged it READFORJULIA

okay, since we are doing so well at reading for Julia, I had an idea. Julia was a member of this group for 5 years - should we try to make her goal 5 times over?
120klobrien2
Wouldn't it be cool to read ALL of the "to read"? And I am showing such hubris, because I haven't even finished one book for rosalita yet. But I can see myself proceeding along, picking a new book out from the list as I finish one.
Which brings me to my next item. I saw that Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club was on rosalita's list, but it has been adopted and read already. I'll still read Saturday Night for my own TBR, but I think my next rosalita pick will be Braiding Sweetgrass, if no one else is reading it? I didn't see any indication of that on this thread or on rosalita's list.

I finished Ella Minnow Pea for the Reading for Julia tribute. I realize that this book was already read by another participant, but it is very good and I thought it was high time that I re-read it (I read it last in the early 2000s), especially since it is for Julia.

I listened to Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney.
130SandyAMcPherson
I have a BB from a couple years ago I wanted to read ~ The Glass Hotel (Emily St. John Mandel). This is on rosalita's TBR list so let me know if it is already "taken".
I have a hold request at my local PL anyway, because it's a story that is set not far from Campbell River, where I used to spend my summers as a kid. Simply wanted to let y'all know I am going to read it, even if it doesn't count towards the ReadForJulia total.

Hello all,
I hope it is okay to drop in here and to share information about a virtual gathering that is being hosted to write an obituary for Julia next weekend.
Cat
Please join us on Saturday March 16th at 3:30 ET/2:30 CT/1:30 MT/12:30 PT for a virtual gathering to share stories and information about our dear Julia LaBua, and to create a crowd-sourced obituary to run in the Quad City Times, the Iowa City Press-Citizen, and her hometown paper, the Monmouth Review Atlas. After Julia's death in January, we (Cat Fribley and Monica Sandschafer) each wanted to find a way to grieve and publicly celebrate Julia's life and we'd love to have your help. We are also hoping to create an in-person opportunity in early summer to gather in Iowa City and to feast together and tell stories of Julia's wit and snark, which are unrivaled. Please feel free to send us information or stories for the obituary if you are unable to join us on the 16th, but we really hope to see you there and to build this remembering of Julia together to share with the rest of the world. Please register at https://forms.gle/RWzgPhP8U4aPpR8c8 and we will send you the Zoom link to join us.

Question: if we're going for the increased goal, would it be too much work at this point to run her ticker separately from the main ticker? Because if it can be counted for her and for our own goal I think we could reach it (faster). Just a thought.

COMPLETED The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles. Am I right in thinking if we tag a book as READFORJULIA, we should not be counting it as one of our own ROOTs?
My review:
On his release from a reform school after the death of his father Emmett decides to leave Nebraska for California with his little brother Billy to find their mother. First, however, they have to help two absconders from the reform school, Duchess and Woolly, get to New York, where they are hoping to claim and divide Woolly's inheritance.
Great fun, with engaging characters I kept reading to learn more about. Ultimately, the book left me wanting to know what happened next, whether Emmett and Billy made it to California and whether they found their mother.

So ... I was a bit bored and I started creating a wiki for this: https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Rosalita%27s_memorial_wiki_2024#.E2.9C.8...
(see >135 humouress:)
I'm copying Julia's TBR across 200 books at a time (I'm halfway through) and tidying up as I go (I'm up to J now) but it takes a while (especially if the wiki decides not to save) and it's not my top priority - so if anyone wants to help out, please do! I'd like to copy the ticker across too, but not sure how.
I've noticed that a couple of people (myself included) have looked at the overlap of Julia's books with ours and picked one to read, but they're not on her TBR so the count may be a bit out.
Please mark your book as ✅ read once you've finished it so no-one else picks it since it won't be double counted. If you're currently reading one, you could mark it as 🤓 reading, for the same reason. Just copy and paste. I'm not a wiki expert - I'm learning as I go - just copy formatting from other parts of the wiki or ask for help.
I'm hoping that'll make things easier and everyone can update the wiki.🤗

Hi all, I have read several books from Julia's TBR over the last few months but am still not using LibraryThing to catalog (much to her ongoing dismay from the realm beyond, I am guessing), so won't count them here. Mostly I pop over to feel connected to her and to look at her TBR to see if what I am reading was also on her list. :)
A group of us did create an obituary for Julia which is running this weekend in advance of an in-person gathering that we will be holding on June 15th at West Branch Library. You can find Julia's (short for print) obituary at https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/qctimes/name/julia-labua-obituary?id=552338... and a much longer remembering of her at 'Remembering Julia LaBua' on Facebook.

This is so thoughtful. I've read a book I'd like to add to the list if we're going for another 50 - I hope we are. Although I wonder if it might be better to increase the goal by ten at a time? The book I read is The Things We Wish Were True by Marybeth Whalen.

What does qualify as a "minor edit" anyway? And why does it matter?

>238 EGBERTINA: Great! I had a look and it's fine.
I'll give you the way to get the checkmark in a sec (see >242 humouress:). But if you click on 'McCullough' it goes to (more or less) that section because there's already a link set up from a previous book.
If you click on edit on the left, you edit the whole wiki which, in this case, is quite large. If you edit the sections by clicking on the edit on the right side, opposite the title of the section, then you're just editing that section which is less cumbersome. Or at least I find it easier.
You do have to click on 'minor edit' and, if it asks for the Captcha, solve that and then click on 'save'.

Well, you've got the checkmark, which is a good start.
If you look in the Bs, this entry has been read (number 45 in the list at the top, if you want to see how the link works):
<div id="Bowen">✅ '''Bowen''', Rhys https://www.librarything.com/work/18663234/book/182662627 In Farleigh Field (Fiction and Literature, Historical Fiction, Mystery, fiction, historical fiction)</div>

- copy that first part <div id="Bowen">✅ , paste it at the front of the line your book is on and (most importantly) change the author's name to Burnett.

<div id="Burnett">✅ '''Burnett''', Frances Hodgson https://www.librarything.com/work/2770555/book/80089551 The Secret Garden (Fiction and Literature, Children's Books, fiction, young adult)</div>
Try copying and pasting that into the wiki and it should be fine.
I notice you have read a book by David McCullough and if you click on the link you created in the list, it goes to his name in the wiki. It's actually to another book by him which has already been read, but you can copy and paste both bits of the second part of the link to your specific book to see how it works. I hope that makes sense.
- Not being an IT person, I couldn't tell you exactly how the <div id="Burnett"> part works but, together with the part you created in the list at the top with the author's name (spelled exactly the same) it creates the link.
- the </div> bit goes at the end to close the code so the link is just for that line.
