February ROOT - Progress Thread

The garden of the month in honor of Valentine's Day is a ROSE Garden.


The Flower Box of London says "Roses not only provide aesthetic impressions but are a source of numerous substances that have a beneficial effect on our body. There are 150-200 different types of these flowers known to occur in the northern hemisphere. Roses have long been one of the most popular flowers to plant in the garden, as well as to buy in bouquets for various occasions.
Roses are shrubs with erect or decumbent stems, usually with thorns. Leaves are mainly seasonal, flowers extremely variable, decorative, colourful, from single through semi-full to full. The flowers of the rose are large, fragrant, radiant and come in a variety of shapes. Roses are used throughout the world as symbols of love, compassion or sorrow. We very often plant them in gardens and give them as gifts to people close to us."




They come in various colors from white to purple, and multiple fragrances.

Sorry for the delay but setting up the years file for calculating the totals took a little bit of time.

We are starting off great!

I reported late, so I'm not sure if you will see it. I read 5 ROOTs in January - a disappointingly low number.

Reporting ROOT # 3 for the year, # 1 for February (already reported in the January thread, but to be sure you saw it, here again too).

Roses always remind me of my mom. She loved roses and had nearly 50 different varieties in her yard. My favorite was a multicolored rose where the petals were red on the inside and white on the outside and it smelled beautiful.

I have updated my goal from 21 to 24. That gives me an even 2 ROOTs per month. Mental math is not my strong point.

I'm a big fan of roses: in gardens, on my skin, in my food... my mom has some gorgeous bushes, and one of my favourite stops was Grasse in the South of France, perfume capital of the world, where there is a Rose Festival and gardens everywhere. Although I wouldn't necessarily call it my favourite flower, it's definitely in the top 10!

I have my first Feb ROOT: The Shadow by James Patterson and Brian Sitts. It was terrible. Don't read it.

>8 cyderry: I am also curious as to what that rose is called. My mom grew roses. My favorite was Crimson Glory. I don't think I've ever found another rose that smelled better. Its fragrance was to die for! The color was also especially beautiful.

I have actually read a ROOT: Interesting winner of the German Bookprize Annette, ein Heldinnenepos (which roughly translates into "Annette, a heroine-epic) by Anne Weber.

I was so slow getting started, that I had forgotten the pin for my ticker and had to create a new one...

I finished my first ROOT for February and second for the year, Burning the books: a history of the deliberate destruction of knowledge by Richard Ovenden. It was very good. I've updated my personal ticker.

I'm definitely a member but I don't see my name on the list!

Finished another ROOT: When McKinsey Comes to Town: The Hidden Influence of the World's Most Powerful Consulting Firm by Walt Bogdanich and Michael Forsythe for my 5th ROOT of the year.

Ah you have really struck a chord with me with this theme, Cheli. I have 24 roses in my garden at present. Mainly standard and mini standards with a few bush roses. I find it difficult to pick a favourite as I love them all. Perhaps Just Joey which is the first out each spring and is a large apricot rose with a nice scent, but I am also fond of 'Hot Chocolate' which is a brick colour and then there is 'Green with Envy', a beautiful lime colour. I have planted the minis for my grandchildren and the standards are for my various family members. I should probably have chosen as my favourite, 'My Girl' a beautiful pink rose for my 3 daughters. They all bring me joy.
I have read 3 roots so far this month and am currently reading a library book for Julia. So currently at 5/48.

Finished my 6th root of the year, and 5th of February - One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. I think it was very timely that I ran across it this past weekend.

I have two more ROOTs to report for February: 1776 and I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, making a total of 4 so far this year. My own ticker is updated.

I'm also up to 4. I like the %!

My cruise has helped me get some reading done - 7 Roots so far this month!

I spent two days in bed because I was felled by a pestilence. I got to spend two days reading and sleeping with some listening to a recorded book thrown in for good measure.

I've added my 5th ROOT for February (#13 for the year) to my own ticker. Pretty sure this will be my last one of the month, I'm not far enough into any of my other books to finish them by tomorrow.

I finished 5 ROOTs in February and 13 overall.
I won't be finishing any more books for February because today is my birthday - yay! - and I'll be celebrating, not reading :)

I only read 2 ROOTs for February. That's the worst I think I've done since joining the ROOTs group. I better pull up my socks. Well, at least March is a longer month.

I had a very good reading February -partly because people left and went home after the funeral, so I had peace and quiet, and partly because I started listening to some of the recorded books while I knitted. That was better than TV in most cases. The end result - I have 10 ROOTS to report.

Most of my reading was good but there were a couple of clunkers in this group. The clunkers were Coral Thief and Loki's Ring. The best one this month was Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie and Martin Walker's books are always fun.

Oh dear, I didn't manage any ROOTs for February. I did start one and I do like the series - but I have a feeling that some of my favourite characters are about to be killed off so I seem to have slowed down.

Still on 3, all read in January. No need to update any tickers :0(

My mother died in late January and the house was full of people who stayed for varying amounts of time for about a week after that. All those people is probably where the pestilence came from - and without Kleenex it would have been medieval.

Just got through two ROOTs this month for a year-so-far total of 6/50 (12%), which is lagging behind; but three of my ROOTs have also been Big Fat Books and I've got another BFB that I've just started on (The Covenant of Water), so I'll have to pick things up with a few shorter reads.

In February I got 2 ROOTs completed for rosalita, and 2 for myself.
