If we the Black voters ‘get loud’, neither the Tories nor Donald Trump will survive (Guardian)

By Al Sharpton

On both sides of the Atlantic, populists are peddling racism. I’m here in the UK to urge Black communities to see it for what it is... Donald Trump’s racist mentality has long been an open secret. In the 1970s, a federal lawsuit was brought against him for alleged racial discrimination on one of his housing developments in New York. He led the campaign calling for the death penalty against the Central Park Five, who were accused of a brutal rape but later vindicated. Even after that exoneration, he continued to suggest they were guilty. So are Black Americans flocking to support Trump? Reports are mixed. Trump himself would tell you he has a unique affinity with the Black community, but personally, I don’t buy it. Polling in 2020 estimated Trump would take 20% of the black vote. The real number was closer to 8%. After all, let’s remember what he says about us. Just this weekend, he said that Black Americans identified with him because he had faced criminal charges and we embraced his criminal mugshot. That was outright racist and insulting. For him to say that during Black History Month in the US is the epitome of an insult. And the irony is that he is the one being prosecuted – and by Black professionals at that. The New York state attorney general, Letitia James, brought the financially ruinous civil financial fraud case against Trump. Fani Willis, Fulton county district attorney, was responsible for challenging Trump’s alleged election interference in Georgia. I spend a lot of time speaking with Black voters. I host a US radio show six days a week – and from what I hear, I’m not alone in thinking that claims that he has growing support among our community are grossly exaggerated. But I do think it is fair to say that Black citizens are asking questions of the Democrats. Joe Biden has simply not done a good enough job on messaging. He needs to be more aggressive in speaking to Black voters – laying out his record... Biden should not assume people know what they haven’t been reminded of. US liberals must understand that if you take the high road and are not making noise about it, no one knows that you’re taking any road. They have to be more vocal, they have to challenge more, and not run away from the issue of race...

🚨By deciding to entertain Donald Trump’s appeal {immunity} and shelving the arguments till April, the U.S. Supreme Court has blatantly thrown its lot in with political maneuvering to favor Trump. The {DC} appellate court’s logic, unassailable, is now overshadowed by the Supreme Court’s apparent disregard for justice.

This Supreme Court has unabashedly revealed its priorities: not the law, not justice, but securing politically convenient outcomes.

This does not necessarily mean that Trump will win. In fact, the electoral landscape appears unfavorable for him as the GOP is divided into two factions: MAGA and non-MAGA.

However, U.S. institutions tasked with protecting the Constitution are either not acting swiftly enough or seem complicit in allowing Trump to potentially evade justice permanently.

The Supreme Court, increasingly perceived as a political entity since 2000, is compromising its own legitimacy by seemingly going out of its way to align with Trump's political interests.

Exactly right. This is inexcusable, from how long it took SCOTUS to decide to hear the case, to giving the parties so long before the argument in late April. But the initial problem was how slow AG Garland was out of the gate.

Delaying the January 6 trial suppresses critical evidence that Americans deserve to hear. Donald Trump attempted to overturn an election and seize power. Our justice system must be able to bring him to trial before the next election. SCOTUS should decide this case promptly.

Trump’s first criminal trial set for March in N.Y. on hush money charges
Shayna Jacobs and Devlin Barrett | February 15, 2024

At a hearing in Manhattan, Donald Trump’s defense lawyers argued that the case will interfere with his presidential campaign...

New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan said he will go forward with the trial on charges that Trump falsified business records during the heat of the 2016 political campaign to keep secret a past sexual liaison with an adult-film star. The judge said he expects the trial to take about six weeks.

...In 2016, with the presidential election looming, Cohen paid adult-film actress Stormy Daniels $130,000 to keep her quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with Trump years earlier. Bragg has accused Trump of reimbursing Cohen for that hush money with payments described as legal fees, when in fact they were a campaign expense meant to keep Trump’s presidential bid untarnished by tawdry allegations of a tryst.

Cohen is expected to testify for the prosecution. But he pleaded guilty in federal court to financial crimes and false statements, and lawyers generally view his credibility as a weakness in the case.

Trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records, a felony in New York when the purpose of the fraud is to “commit another crime or to aid or conceal” an illegal act. In announcing the charges, Bragg said the goal of Trump’s scheme was to cover up violations of the law including New York and federal campaign finance rules. Bragg also said the $130,000 payment exceeded the federal campaign contribution cap...

‘I don’t know’: Nikki Haley unsure Trump would follow constitution (Guardian)

Asked if she thought Donald Trump would follow the US constitution if he is elected for a second term as president, Nikki Haley said: “I don’t know”... Trump’s campaign rhetoric has been characteristically dark, including a wish to be a “dictator” on day one in office and promises to take “ultimate and absolute revenge” on his enemies. He has mused about “vindication” and about “terminating” the constitution. Haley said: “You know, when you … go and you talk about revenge – when you go and you talk about, you know, vindication {and} when you go and you talk about – what does that mean? Like, I don’t know what that means, and only he can answer for that. What I can answer for is, I don’t think there should ever be a president that’s above the law. I don’t think that there should ever be a president that has total immunity to do whatever they want to do”...

The Man Who Now Controls the U.S. Border
David Frum | March 1, 2024

Mexico’s president gets to determine whether an immigration crisis dominates headlines in a U.S. election year.

...In the effort to contain unauthorized migration to the U.S., Mexico is an on-again, off-again partner. Sometimes it helps more; sometimes less...

...The United States flashes the message “You can probably stay if you get here” and then quietly looks to its southern neighbor to magnify the dangers of that tempting if.

...Delegating the job of border enforcement to Mexico also creates opportunities for Mexican leaders to influence U.S. politics...month-by-month tally of unauthorized crossings into the U.S...spiked in the second half of {2023--midterms}, exceeding 250,000...An American president up for reelection might look at that slideshow from his Mexican counterpart and see not merely an analysis but a threat about the trouble that the counterpart could stir or soothe. The migrant traffic has slowed in the first weeks of 2024.

...The border deal that failed to pass the U.S. Senate earlier this month was intended to reassert American control over entry into the U.S. Rejection of the deal shifts power over the border, back into López Obrador’s eager hands...Mexico faces an election of its own in June...López Obrador has proclaimed again and again his preference for Donald Trump over Joe Biden...

In the Supreme Court ruling on whether former President Donald Trump can be removed from the ballot in Colorado, or in any other state, four justices write concurring opinions, stating that they agree with the court’s ruling, but disagree with how far the ruling goes. Lawrence Tribe joins Katy Tur to discuss the details and explain what these disagreements mean. “When the court decides more than it needs to decide to resolve a case, then it is acting not like a court, but basically like a super legislature. That's what the court did in this case,” Tribe tells Katy. “It left basically unenforced, and for all practical purposes unenforceable, the Constitution's main protection for democracy when it is threatened by a would-be dictator who tries to overthrow the Constitution, stay in power beyond the end of his term, doesn't quite succeed, and then tries again.”

Put yourself in the shoes of a Donald Trump voter – and understand what drives his success (Guardian)

Within Trump’s wild exaggerations are grains of truth. Liberals have never dealt with them – and that’s why he might win again... Donald Trump is certain to be the Republican candidate in this year’s election for US president. He is also currently favourite to win. To most readers of the Guardian, I am sure this prospect is appalling, as it is to most Britons. The nation to which they gave birth and language, that has been their friend and protector down the ages, seems to be going mad. Britons who know the US are amazed that, however reluctantly, enough of its voters might again choose Trump to rule over them after the experience of 2017 to 2021. Who are these Americans? How can they be so blind to his faults, with the law hounding him, gossip ridiculing him and commentators pouring scorn and derision on his every word? The answer is that the Americans who support Trump are not those whom most Britons know. They are elderly and rural: they are often, but by no means solely, working class and/or non-graduates. But, above all, they love Trump because they, too, are hostile to the Americans that he purports to hate. These hated Americans – the language of Trump’s rallies is visceral – mostly live in big cities down the east and west coasts. They favour federal government, identity politics, social liberalism and free trade. They are led by a college-educated, liberal establishment. Of course, these are generalisations – but that is what Trump trades in...

‘It’ll be bedlam’: how Trump is creating conditions for a post-election eruption (Guardian)

As the ex-president fans the flames of violence, experts and insiders say November will be a brutal test for US democracy... A bloodbath. The end of democracy. Riots in the streets. Bedlam in the country. Donald Trump has made apocalyptic imagery a defining feature of his presidential election campaign, warning supporters that if he does not win – and avoid criminal prosecution – the US will enter its death throes. The prophecies of doom, repeated ad nauseam at rallies and on social media, have raised fears that the former president is making an electoral tinderbox that could explode in November. While there has been much commentary assessing the implications of a Trump win, some experts warn that a Trump defeat could provide an equally severe stress test of American democracy. “Regardless of whether Donald Trump wins or loses, there’s going to be violence”... “If Donald Trump loses, he’s not going to concede and he’s going to inspire people to commit acts of violence, just like he did in the weeks and months leading up to January 6, 2021. If he wins, I also believe that there’s going to be violence committed by his supporters, targeting people who previously tried to hold him to account, whether it was members of the press, average citizens like myself, Department of Justice officials, state and federal prosecutors. I believe him when he says that he will have his vengeance.” Trump has long sought to sow distrust in the electoral system while using rhetoric outside the boundaries of modern political discourse, dehumanising opponents and immigrants and portraying the US as a nation on the verge of collapse...

Trump’s bizarre, vindictive incoherence has to be heard in full to be believed (Guardian)

Donald Trump’s speeches on the 2024 campaign trail so far have been focused on a laundry list of complaints, largely personal, and an increasingly menacing tone. He’s on the campaign trail less these days than he was in previous cycles – and less than you’d expect from a guy with dedicated superfans who brags about the size of his crowds every chance he gets. But when he has held rallies, he speaks in dark, dehumanizing terms about migrants, promising to vanquish people crossing the border. He rails about the legal battles he faces and how they’re a sign he’s winning, actually. He tells lies and invents fictions. He calls his opponent a threat to democracy and claims this election could be the last one. Trump’s tone, as many have noted, is decidedly more vengeful this time around, as he seeks to reclaim the White House after a bruising loss that he insists was a steal. This alone is a cause for concern, foreshadowing what the Trump presidency redux could look like. But he’s also, quite frequently, rambling and incoherent, running off on tangents that would grab headlines for their oddness should any other candidate say them...

Biden closes gap on Trump but third-party candidates pose danger, polls show (Guardian)

Multiple new polls show Joe Biden strengthening slightly in the US presidential election, but suggest third-party candidates could present a risk to his chance of carrying the White House in November. According to a New York Times/Siena College poll released on Saturday, Biden has whittled down the four-point lead Donald Trump held in February, with Trump leading Biden 46% to 45% among registered voters... Asked a follow-up question that added the independent candidates Robert F Kennedy Jr, an environmental lawyer and vaccine sceptic, the Harvard professor Cornel West, and the Green party figure Jill Stein, Biden took the greater hit to his support, leveling with Trump at 38%. With Kennedy at 11%, West at 2%, and Stein at 1%, Jones calculated that Kennedy’s presence siphoned off five points of Biden’s support to Trump’s two...

>35 John5918: A couple things 1) the polls several months before an election here quite often are going to be more negative to the current office holder than how things will turn out on Election Day at least as far as vote counts 2) because of the undemocratic electoral college for a democrat to win they're going to need more than just 50%. Because of the EC the real key to winning a presidential election is in the 6 or 7 battleground states....the rest are already pretty much in the bank for one party or the other 3) as for third party candidates I don't think there's going to be much chance that all of Kennedy, West or Stein are going to be on the ballot of very many states. You might get one or two but not them all....also there is likely to be a libertarian choice for pretty much every state and that character is going to draw more votes away from the republican than the democrat. Convenient for The NY Times 'liberal' shills to ignore that. Of all third party votes it's almost always the libertarian candidate who gets the most votes and it's usually substantially more than any other third party candidate. The two major parties though in state after state use election law to make it very hard for alternative candidates to get on the ballot. Well the Republicans never claimed to be very democratic.

‘I’m Not Happy With The Choice’: Bill Barr Explains Why He’s Regretfully Supporting Trump Over Biden

***
Liar, liar pants on fire!

Bill has returned to his pre-1/6 Trump enabling mode. The fact that he explained his 2024 prez voting preference on the news network that had to pay out $800m because of its lying-to-the-public business model is a perfect example of what a clueless dick he is and will always be. Lacking a moral compass appears to be a trait all Trump enablers have in common.

Everyone laughed at Hitler in the 1920s. A century on, are we making the same mistake? (Guardian)

Just because we find a political leader ludicrous, that doesn’t mean they’re not dangerous... a chapter called The Beerhall Agitator, about the absurd-looking little rabble-rouser’s activities during the early 1920s. As a kid I always wondered how they could all have been taken in by such an apparently ludicrous man. The awful truth, of course, was that enough people thought him ludicrous for this ludicrous man to be calamitously underestimated. It invariably feels lame, swivel-eyed or just plain wrong to compare any modern politician to Hitler, but this line, written by Hitler himself of his beerhall agitator years, makes my blood run cold most days these days. There’s more than one failed, incumbent or potential leader who regularly brings it to mind. “It makes no difference whatever whether they laugh at us or revile us … whether they represent us as clowns or criminals; the main thing is that they mention us, that they concern themselves with us again and again …”

How Far Trump Would Go
ERIC CORTELLESSA 30 April 2024

...I wanted to know what Trump would do if he wins a second term, to hear his vision for the nation, in his own words.

What emerged in two interviews with Trump, and conversations with more than a dozen of his closest advisers and confidants, were the outlines of an imperial presidency that would reshape America and its role in the world. To carry out a deportation operation designed to remove more than 11 million people from the country, Trump told me, he would be willing to build migrant detention camps and deploy the U.S. military, both at the border and inland. He would let red states monitor women’s pregnancies and prosecute those who violate abortion bans. He would, at his personal discretion, withhold funds appropriated by Congress, according to top advisers. He would be willing to fire a U.S. Attorney who doesn’t carry out his order to prosecute someone, breaking with a tradition of independent law enforcement that dates from America’s founding. He is weighing pardons for every one of his supporters accused of attacking the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, more than 800 of whom have pleaded guilty or been convicted by a jury. He might not come to the aid of an attacked ally in Europe or Asia if he felt that country wasn’t paying enough for its own defense. He would gut the U.S. civil service, deploy the National Guard to American cities as he sees fit, close the White House pandemic-preparedness office, and staff his Administration with acolytes who back his false assertion that the 2020 election was stolen...

Trump explains his militaristic plan to deport 15-20 million people (CNN)

It is rare to get major presidential candidates – on either side of the political aisle – outside the confines of prepared remarks, stump speeches and friendly audiences, so it’s worth paying attention when they actually take detailed questions... He did not commit to the full “Project 2025” effort his supporters envision to gut the perceived “deep state” by reclassifying a much larger portion of the federal government as political appointees... Trump insisted he would leave the issue of abortion rights up to states... And some of his more outlandish comments, he said, were just jokes. He said to put his repeated pledge to declare himself “dictator for a day” into this category. “That was said sarcastically. That was meant as a joke,” he said... The topic on which Trump had the most concrete details is his plan to deport many millions of undocumented immigrants. Trump repeated false claims that many migrants are former prisoners or have been institutionalized in their home countries. CNN has reported there is no data to support the idea that a rise in immigrants drives a rise in crime. Most measures of violent crime in the US have actually been falling... Trump told Time he would target between 15 million and 20 million people who he said are undocumented in the US... Rather than work with Democrats, Trump wants to militarize the issue, but he would start by using local police forces and focusing on any migrants with a criminal record. Trump was asked if his effort would include the military. “It would,” Trump said, adding, “when we talk military, generally speaking, I talk National Guard.” He added that he would “have no problem using the military, per se,” although he thinks the National Guard would suffice. He does not think that laws meant to prevent the use of the military against civilians inside the US without congressional approval would apply to his effort. “These aren’t civilians,” Trump said of migrants. “These are people that aren’t legally in our country. This is an invasion of our country.” He also repeated the conspiracy theory, for which there is no evidence, that “fighting age” males from China are somehow embedding themselves in the US. “You have to do what you have to do to stop crime and to stop what’s taking place at the border,” he said...

>44 John5918: FWIW both major political parties right now are working together on a project to suppress both protest and speech. For the greater part the courts and law enforcement are more than happy to crack down and sometimes with great force. Their intention to shut down what they don't want to hear or see and it's quite obvious that they don't need public support for this project when they're working in tandem. I don't see a great deal of difference between the two parties on this. Both are at the beck and call of their wealthiest donors as well as a foreign govt. The voting public matter less than these other entities. The police will always do what their masters want. Nationwide they're like high school football jocks use to being the big shots on campus. As far as the current political situation what I would say is neither the democratic or republican parties give a fuck about what the American population think or want. Well they hardly ever have shown it in concrete ways anyway. At best when they do respond to real needs it's half measures. If Donald does get back to power I think he'll be capable of quite a lot---and the courts and law enforcement would love to have the green light to do whatever. When it comes to justice or the limelight they'll choose the limelight every time. Would Donald go so far as to eliminate or imprison political opponents? I could see it but right now at this time we're seeing the Biden administration and congress in lockstep in this project to suppress dissent. It seems almost that we're headed to the same place anyway no matter who wins in November.

After all, if they really can't tell the difference between the two parties, maybe it's okay for them to sit this one out. Ohio Moving to Exclude Biden from Ballot
This is heading for the courts.
Ron Filipkowski | 22 May 2024

n 2010, the Ohio legislature passed a law creating an arbitrary deadline that candidates for each political party must be nominated 90 days before the election to get on the ballot. That provision has never been enforced to keep a candidate off the ballot - until now.

Both the Republican and Democratic National Conventions took place after the 90 day Ohio deadline in 2012 and 2020. Both times the legislature passed a bill to extend the deadline so there were no issues. However, 2024 is the first time that only one party has their nominating convention after the deadline, and it just happens to be the Democrats which will nominate Biden on August 22, two weeks after Ohio's arbitrary deadline.

The Republican supermajority was asked again, just like in 2012 and 2020, to extend the deadline so there will not be an issue. They have refused to do so...

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is going to invite Netanyahu to speak before congress again. JGL should pay attention. As a matter of political expediency it seems he can live with a little Palestinian genocide. Last time Netanyahu spoke before the congress it was at the invite of John Boehner....another Republican speaker and Netanyahu used that opportunity as a chance to take a rather large swipe at then POTUS Obama who was then and is now considerably less gormless and schmuckish than our current POTUS Biden. At this point Biden may have torpedoed his own re-election lifting boulders for Israel's apartheid like regime and supporting this mass murderer (do you think he'll get any thanks?) but I don't think it's any secret that Benjamin would rather have Trump and both a republican House and Senate in power and get ready JLG because I suspect the Israeli Prime Minister is going to light into Biden this time and if he does I also suspect that the most surprised human being on Earth will be Genocide Joe who's committed the sin of holding up one shipment of 2000 lb. bombs the day before he decided to send them another $1 billion of war munitions. Netanyahu is a snake though he's not the only one. Republicans will look at this as a golden opportunity to undermine Biden even more and there may be a number of Democrats jumping on board their train like Fetterman, Torres, Gottheimer etc. It might be a long list.

The sentiments described in that rap song which has gone viral are a bomb that's going to explode on the Democratic Party. The students were demonized in 1968 too but as far as history has gone they were right and Humphrey lost big to Nixon. He chose a direction they weren't willing to follow. Those protests started a movement then and they're starting a movement now. And the fossils and dinosaurs in the Democratic House and Senate were clueless then and clueless now. They're interested way more in their wealthy donors than younger voters as the universities are way more interested in endowments from their wealthy alumni than in their own students and this is what a good % of these protesters are seeing now. We will all lose, but folks at these latitudes will lose the most, first. (Already India and se Asia are experiencing extreme heat.) ‘No wannabe dictators!’: Donald Trump booed at Libertarian convention (Guardian)

Donald Trump, the former US president, has suffered the rare humiliation of getting booed and heckled during a raucous speech to the Libertarian National Convention. Trump’s rocky ride at a Washington hotel on Saturday night, including cries of “Bullshit!” and “Fuck you!”, underlined the challenge that the Republican presidential nominee faces to broaden his appeal both left and right on the political spectrum. “The fact is we should not be fighting each other,” Trump pleaded. “If Joe Biden gets back in, there will be no more liberty for anyone in our country. Combine with us in a partnership – we’re asking that of the libertarians. We must work together. Combine with us. You have to combine with us.” The appeal went down like a lead balloon as delegates booed, jeered and shouted insults. It was a stunning rebuke for a man who has become accustomed to cult-like rallies where his every word is cheered to the echo. The Libertarian party, which prioritises small government and individual freedoms, typically gains 3% or less of the national vote but its members could yet prove crucial in swing states this November. Trump’s clumsy attempt to court them resulted in him scolding them instead...

They've spent decades pursuing policies designed to increase the number of abortions, so I think even their thickest supporters will have figured out by now that their "pro-life" rhetoric has nothing at all to do with preventing abortions, and everything to do with good old-fashioned misogyny. And I think that's what their supporters are looking for.

I mean, it's not a pretty picture, but it seems like you have to assume the republican voter is an idiot, or that they're a bastard, and I think it's a stretch to assume that they've voted for bastards for this long without having some inkling that that's what they were getting.

72John5918
Edited: May 31, 12:11 am

The term "pro-life" has come to be associated only with an ideological stance on one single issue, namely abortion. Many many Christians would rather adopt what might be called a "consistent ethic of life", a term introduced to the conversation in the USA by Catholic priest Daniel Berrigan as far back as the 1970s, which opposes all threats to human life, including war, violence, torture, militarism, euthanasia, capital punishment, abortion, poverty, inequality, nuclear weapons, small arms and light weapons, lack of access to health, education and welfare services, denial of civil and human rights, autocratic governance, etc, etc.

>72 John5918: The term "pro-life" has come to be associated only with an ideological stance on one single issue, namely abortion

I don't want to bang on this too much, but it's important to be precise about this: it's not associated with a stance on abortion, it's associated with a lie about a stance on abortion. "Pro-life" does not mean that someone opposes abortion, it means that they want, for reasons of politics, to be perceived as opposing abortion, while actually working diligently to increase the rate of unplanned pregnancies, and hence abortions. There's nothing inconsistent about someone identifying as "pro-life" and also being fine with providing mass murderers with the tools of their trade, causing needless deaths by restricting access to health care, etc., etc. - this is only problematic if you believe the label rather than looking at what's in the box. What they actually believe, as far as I can see, is a pretty consistent ideology. It just has nothing to do with the socialist organizer that they claim as their inspiration.

74lriley
Edited: May 31, 12:11 pm

Almost all people aren't precise about a lot of things political. Not just abortion. There's so much that one almost can't help but be ignorant about a lot of things. More often than not people will make allowances for people they vote for that they wouldn't for those they don't vote for and Trump might be the best example of that. Abortion though has been debated about for decades so that's one of the commons. I've heard all the anti-abortion shit for years.....a high % of my family, relatives, people they were friendly with are church going conservatives. Pretty much I find their arguments on abortion to be pretty dumb....that they parrot shit they would hear from their priests, favorite politicians and friends. They also think Jesus and the Bible are on their side which isn't exactly provable or true. People want to believe in something so bad---and if it's not God and religion, it's favorite politicians or economic systems etc. etc. but mostly it's all those things together. A package deal. They're invested.

We now know Donald Trump committed crimes to win his first election.

We know that he committed crimes to try to overturn his second election.

We are five months from the next election. Why would it be any different this time? Except that now, the GOP is his willing accomplice.

>76 margd: The GOP was a willing accomplice the second time around. But really we can also see the influence of the super wealthy on both parties. Biden for instance is between a rock and a hard place satisfying his wealthy donors and the left of his party, younger voters and Muslims and per the usual both major parties think they win because of money and so the billionaires are more important. For getting out the vote I guess you need some cash. Are the democrats trying to get out the vote? No rallies, no tv ads, no activists going door to door, no primaries, a virtual convention coming our way?--what is that exactly? I've seen none of these things anyway though NYS is a state taken for granted but there was always something going on by this time. Maybe it's different in Michigan. It should be because if Joe doesn't win Michigan I don't think he will win. So far participation isn't needed. It doesn't look like much on the other side either though the Donald gets out to do a rally now and again.

This conviction of Mr. Trump I don't think is going to peel away too many of his voters. Maybe a percentage or two but my read is enthusiasm is low everywhere for pretty much everyone.

Traditionally the theory was that no one paid attention to politics until after the summer was over. Since Trump though it's been politics year round but still it seems early to spend a lot of money on ads. Reaching out to various communities should be a full time activity for the parties though

“DISASTER”
In the Former Eastern Bloc, They’re Terrified of a Trump Presidency
David Rothkopf | June 4, 2024

For Americans, authoritarian rule is theoretical. But in Eastern Europe, reminders of it are everywhere, as is dread of a partial return to those days.

...Europeans fear a 2nd Trump administration would work with Russians and their far-right allies—those in power in Hungary and Serbia, opposition leaders in France and Germany—to transform European politics, destroy the EU, and eventually dismantle NATO...

Kellyanne's "cultural anthropology" theory that she devised from polling data convinced Corey Lewandowski, Trump and Michael Cohen that Trump could win the presidency in 2016. Biden Wanders Away From Other G7 Leaders—And Controversy Ensues: The Video Explained

A video of President Joe Biden peeling off from other Group of Seven world leaders Thursday drew widespread scrutiny, with Biden's critics arguing he looked aloof on the world stage, though a different cut of the video showed him walking away to talk to other individuals outside of the frame — as Biden's mental fitness has become a focal point of Republican attacks against the president during an election year...

The question isn’t whether Trump or Biden is declining faster: it’s why the US is faced with this choice (Guardian)

both men – 78 and 81 respectively – have behaved in ways that might give even the most cautious observer pause. These are two of the oldest people ever to run for president, at a time of unprecedented video documentation and manipulation, and in a race in which the stakes are so high you would have to be superhuman not to suffer the occasional lapse. Meanwhile, both are folksy, unorthodox communicators, with none of Obama-the-lawyer’s facility for pitch-perfect off-the-cuff eloquence. Still, the evidence of decline on both sides is compelling... the more depressing fact about all of this is that out of a population of more than 330 million, this is the choice we face. You can be old, infirm, not on top of the details and hopelessly inarticulate, or at least give a very strong impression that all of these things are true. But as long as you are a white man, you can still be president of the United States.

>93 John5918: Both of them are mentally challenged. Trump clearly shows more physical energy but that's about it. Neither was particularly smart to begin with. Biden even back in the days when he was Senator of Delaware was a pedestrian intelligence.....a guy with connections who pretty much stayed in his lane and always followed the dictates of party leaders. Trump is absolutely incurious about anything that doesn't touch on his greed or personal ambitions and that's pretty much 10% of what's normal for any average human being. They're both terrible.....Biden was getting destroyed in the early 2020 primaries before Obama and Clyburn stepped in to get most of the field to bow out and to circle the wagons around him. He became simply the anti-Trump candidate but he was never really a popular choice and that was clear in the early primaries. I have no love for a number of those would be candidates but I would have taken every single one of them over him. Even back then Biden had to be sheltered away from people because he was blowing up all the time. That's a problem with the Democratic Party....they're not really interested in giving their base a choice.....the establishment and their wealthiest donors want to pick that choice for them and with Biden they wanted to run him like a puppet....and speaking of 2016 with Hilary Clinton.....when you put up someone with such a love/hate dynamic you're playing with fire. It's like these two parties look for their worst possible candidates and go with them. But really this is what you get when you have a party system that for some decades has shown that they care very little for the population at large. We can always find the money for bombs and war.....never for something like health care and anyone who ever falls through the cracks well that's pretty much that's the end of them......they're never crawling out. They want this society to be made of winners and losers with just enough in between to keep things afloat. But there's going to be way more losers and left behinds than there are winners. That's all baked into how they figure.

95jjwilson61
Jun 20, 1:22 am

The party with the presidency always re-ups the president for a second term. If there's a fight then history shows that weakens the party's chance to win. That's just the way it works in our two party system.

What's really unusual this time is the loser of a presidential bid making a second attempt. Usually they'd slink away in disgrace.

96lriley
Edited: Jun 20, 6:55 am

We see what both these guys are like now. Biden's shuffling around more than walking. They both slur words all the time.....get lost on tangents and into cul-de-sacs when they speak. Trump can get particularly bizarre like with the sharks thing the other day. Biden seems to blank out at times. Mitch McConnell's been doing it too. It seems pretty likely that if Biden wins Kamala Harris is going to take over for him sometime before his 4 years are up. I don't think it's just them....the majority of members of congress don't seem to reflect the will of their base voters at all well let alone the public at large. Political direction of either party is deranged (for example the show trials of University deans) and we're seeing draconian efforts to suppress protest and speech and I can get away with anything and everything elitism from pols, the super wealthy and Supreme Court justices since Trump's appearance that's saturated throughout our politics as a whole as well as a baneful kowtowing to the desires of billionaire donors, corporate megaliths and outside influencers including foreign countries. The American democratic project has gone off the rails.

Say what? The man can hardly walk! Where are you getting this stuff from? You gotta stop getting your news from social media... subscribing to a newspaper would help you a lot here.

I'm going to ignore the rewriting of history required to ascribe Biden's success as a senator to "connections". Of course he has "connections", he's been in politics for decades and working with people is kind of the point, but if you're suggesting that he got into the position by some sort of personal favors, I'd love to see where you're getting that from.

They're both terrible

This is sort of nonsense. To imply that Biden and Trump are somehow equivalently bad requires a lot of ignoring. I know, I know, you've decided you hate Biden - that's fine, you don't have to love the guy, but let's stick to reality. To say that they're "both terrible" is to suggest that it doesn't really matter who wins, and there is literally no issue on which this is true.

If you really think they're equally bad, pick any three issues you like and explain how you think those issues will look in, say 2026 under Biden, versus under Trump. (feel free to assume a split congress - though if you want to assume a Republican edge in both houses, that would be statistically within bounds, and would sharpen up the game a bit)

Trump Veepstakes Is Reportedly a Proxy Fight Between Tucker Carlson and Murdoch Empire

According to Puck’s Tara Palmeri, Carlson is lobbying Trump on behalf of Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the Trump critic turned devotee who has championed isolationism and a left turn on economics within the GOP that aligns with Carlson’s own ideological leanings.

Meanwhile various voices from within the Murdoch empire have urged Trump to go in another direction. Longtime host Sean Hannity is reportedly “pushing hard” for Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), who is seen as a bridge between the Trump and traditionally conservative wings of the party.

Murdoch himself, meanwhile, is said to favor Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. He made the case for Youngkin during a phone call earlier this year and a recent New York Post editorial laid out the argument for picking Burgum.

Trump campaign seeks to head off convention revolt from its right flank
Yvonne Wingett Sanchez and Isaac Arnsdorf | June 22, 2024

Aides scrambled to foil a plot to throw the nominating process into chaos as suspicions abound about potentially disloyal delegates.

Arizona delegates to the Republican National Convention gathered this month in a Phoenix suburb ... Part of the presentation included a secret plan to throw the party’s nomination of Donald Trump for president into chaos ... came from avowed “America First” believers hatching a challenge from the far right — a plot to release the delegates from their pledge to support Trump ... gambit would require support from several other state delegations, and it wasn’t clear whether those allies had been lined up.

...purpose ... not clear ... block an undesirable running mate ... substitute former national security adviser Michael Flynn for Trump if the former president is sentenced to prison time ... former president has surrounded himself with too many advisers beholden to the “deep state”... {money}

...“Suspending of the rules would then allow an open forum to consider alternate candidates to Trump,” one person involved in the state’s delegate drama said...

"It started minutes into the debate, and it continues right now," he continued. "It involves party strategists. It involves elected officials. It involves fundraisers. And they're having conversations about the president's performance, which they think was dismal, which they think will hurt other people down the party in the ticket, and they're having conversations about what they should do about it."

FACT FOCUS: Here’s a look at some of the false claims made during Biden and Trump’s first debate
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS | June 28, 2024

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump traded barbs and a variety of false and misleading information as they faced off in their first debate of the 2024 election.

Trump falsely represented the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as a relatively small number of people who were ushered in by police and misstated the strength of the economy during his administration.

Biden, who tends to lean more on exaggerations and embellishments rather than outright lies, misrepresented the cost of insulin and overstated what Trump said about using disinfectant to address COVID. Here’s a look at the false and misleading claims on Thursday night by the two candidates...

FWIW I spent almost all of 2017 running back and forth between assisted living and nursing homes for the elderly. It was a daily thing when my mom went into the assisted living home. She was lucky in that she didn't have many meds to take and she had her wits about her but not everybody is like that and the majority of people who go in these homes are already lonely and somewhat confused and feel abandoned as it is. Half way through that year she hurt her back and she had to go to a nursing home that had rehabilitation services. We continued to keep her payments up for the first place though because we were hoping that we could get her back there and we were lucky that she was able to...I mean she was 94 at the time. But anyway she got pneumonia that November and died on Christmas Eve. But anyway not claiming expertise in the matter but over the course of that year I had interactions with many elderly people and lots of them had memory issues or other forms of dementia....had difficulty expressing themselves. People do get lonely in those places.....they have each other and staff but lots of them do not get visits from anyone at all or very infrequently and so often I'd have someone latching on to me just because. Not going to say where I think Biden is but I definitely do see him on the dementia or memory loss/issues expressing himself pathway. How far down it? Well......Actually Trump's taken a few steps of his own down the same road IMO.

Neither one of these people should be running for leader of our country....a country with vast military power and nuclear capability. Neither is healthy and neither is mentally or psychologically fit and sick people are going to make sick decisions and/or they're going to be manipulated by their handlers. It's not just them though.....it's these two shitty political parties that have put them front and center and when you look at the Dems wheeling out Feinstein the last couple years or McConnell blacking out multiple times I think it says something about the direction of both parties including other pols and their donors. It's all a naked attraction to political power for its own sake.

Robert Kuttner makes a persuasive case for Biden to step aside. I still think he's the best person for the job, but after seeing him last night I'm not sure he can convince undecided voters of this. It's very frustrating because he had so many openings to punch back at Trump and he just didn't take them. I mean, if he had just pointed out that Trump was unable to answer a question - and maybe left open the obvious implication, that he was unable to remember what it was that he'd been asked - then I think it would have been a very different story. But he didn't, and that's where we're at.

I would imagine that there are going to be a lot of conversations with his friends in the Senate and other advisers - and I expect the name Ginsburg is going to come up in each of them. The worry, of course, is that opening up the nomination will lead to all sorts of difficulties - the Kamala Harris issue being just one of them.

So, if Biden steps aside, what's the ticket? Kuttner suggests Whitmer/Warnock, which is appealing in a lot of ways but more or less guarantees Republican control of the Senate. Who else is out there that folks would like to see?

>114 margd: I don't know if you know any neurologists but if you do and they watched Biden last night you could ask him/her. I think a lot of doctors might also tell you what they think. I'm definitely a lay person but I have had experiences with people who have had dementia and that performance last night seem pretty tell tale to me. The shuffling about....his speech, general movement, getting lost in his thought processing, even facial signs. I don't see how he's going to win a second term. It already seemed at best neck and neck and really it shouldn't be this difficult for the democrats to put someone up who could defeat Trump. It seems almost that since Obama termed out the Democratic Party has been determined to put up its worst possible candidates. It's not like the majority of voters like Donald but putting up bad candidates gives him a shot to win and right now the incumbent is not only a bad candidate but last night he looked like he might be losing his mind.

The democrats have to hold the states they almost always win + win at least some of the swing states particularly your state of Michigan. After last night Biden is going to have to get out in public more to try to dispel some of the damage from last night's debate. Jesus Fucking Christ on a bed of rice with extra gravy.

Biden had a cold. No one is at their best when suffering from a cold.

Duh.

I am writing to Mensa, Inc. right now about having all of your memberships revoked.

LOL.

......................

When Biden spoke he made perfect sense. I detected no misstatements.

tRUMP, as usual, either would not answer the question proffered or overtly lied - something that could be easily fact-checked by even the most incompetent "reporter" or news-person.

So - all this inane hand-wringing and pearl-clutching and Scarlet O'Haraesque melodrama over Biden's alleged poor performance is rather over-the-top, to say the least.

One historical reference comes to mind - In the fall of 2012 Obama was deemed to have lost the first debate to Mitt Romney by everybody, and I mean Everybody, even his most ardent supporters. And yet he came back in November to easily defeat Romney by 5 million votes. So - is all now utterly lost? I don't fucking think so. Please to untangle your panties, guys and gals.

The latest analysis I have seen is that 80 per cent of those watching did not change their minds and will not change their vote. Of the other twenty per cent ten per cent say they will probably go with Biden and ten per cent with tRUMP. Where I come from that is called a wash, a draw, a tie - you know, not some stroke of death.

So - I call BULLSHIRT regarding all this Sturm and Drang. Crap in a crock pot, there are drag queens on Fire Island at some wonderful parties right now who no doubt aren't acting half as melodramatic as most of the talking heads on TV are right now - not to mention those of you aping them on this thread.

In any case, thank you all for the entertainment. Let no one say you are all useless. God will not be mocked. All cytoplasm/multicellular lifeforms were created for some purpose.

'158 or 159 Presidential Historians' Voted Trump Worst President in US History?
Anna Rascouët-Paz | June 28, 2024

U.S. President Joe Biden cited this survey during the June 27, 2024, presidential debate, urging viewers to "look it up."

TRUE

Context
The exact number of survey participants was 154, and the group included historians and other social science experts in presidential politics, but they did vote Trump the worst president in U.S. history. Biden was voted 14th greatest, between John Adams and Woodrow Wilson. Barack Obama was seventh and Ronald Reagan was 16th, while Abraham Lincoln snagged the top spot...

Allan Lichtman Prediction for 2024 Presidential Election
June 29, 2024

...The 13 Keys to the White House, developed by Distinguished Professor of History Allan J. Lichtman at American University, is an analytical framework for predicting the outcome of American presidential elections. Unlike polls and poll-based projections, this model focuses on the larger picture, the consequential events during a president’s term, instead of campaigning and rhetoric.

... Allan Lichtman’s 13 Keys to the White House?
The 13 Keys to the White House is a checklist of thirteen true/false statements that pertain to the circumstances surrounding a presidential election. The Keys are:
1. Midterm gains
2. No primary contest
3. Incumbent seeking re-election
4. No third party
5. Strong short-term economy
6. Strong long-term economy
7. Major policy change
8. No social unrest
9. No scandal
10. No foreign/military failure
11. Major foreign/military success
12. Charismatic incumbent
13. Uncharismatic challenger

Here is how the framework performed over the 10 Elections...

Here is how the keys look as per our assessment. Biden is leading in 4 while Trump is leading 2 with 7 undecided. If we combine with the above more limited criteria, Trump has the advantage... {Update: 9 of the 13 Keys Allan Lichtman’s Keys to White House are now predicting a win for Joe Biden.}

>124 Molly3028: He should.

JLG likes to cite Bill Maher. Since the debate Maher is now telling everyone that Biden is going to lose. He said he's seen beauty pageant contestants answer questions better. Haha. Well I never thought he was particularly funny.

Alzheimer's/dementia usually will take some time to set in. Most often a person goes back and forth between being lost altogether and normality but it's something that always gradually worsens to the point where the subject is pretty much gone mentally. It's something that can happen to anyone that reads these pages--anyone at all. It's more prevalent these days because people live longer though I had a friend who started in her 50's. When a person gets lost you can see it in their face. Hear it in their voice and their throat noises. You can see the confusion when they start with a question and end up completely lost on a long circular tangent that has nothing to do with what they tried to answer. There is also short and long term memory. My grandmother died at 107. When you tell people that---'wow, that's really great!' but not so fast....the last 10 years or so of her life were not happy at all and she was continually grasping at straws. She could remember all kinds of shit that happened in the past but she couldn't remember a thing you told her a minute ago and she continually confused one person for another and that's just another thing because you can also see the frustration and sometimes it's in the angry outbursts of someone who is continually losing the thread.

To me there are signs for Trump as well but he's nowhere as far down the path as Biden is. He could catch up though....some people decline faster than others. No fan of Reagan or Thatcher but both of them went out that way. Recently we've seen Feinstein and wheeling her around like everything was okay was pretty grotesque.....also McConnell. So politicians and also their super wealthy elite friends aren't immune from this either. Life comes with humbling experience.

The NY TImes before the 2020 elections had sit down interviews with each of the prospective democratic candidates and the word was even then that Biden's interview was so incoherent they didn't want to release it. It makes me think that this has been going on a lot longer than maybe some people think. It also is something of an explanation why Biden rarely speaks at rallies or event for any length of time.

Trump has been displaying aberrant behavior though for decades whether or not that has anything to do with dementia is more of a ? for me right now (as in him being able to function at all) than with Biden but Donald's shit has more to do with psychoses IMO but he often garbles shit, gets lost on tangents as well. I'd say as far as Trump less signs of dementia but he's certifiably crazy. I don't think either one of them are healthy either mentally or psychologically and neither is close to stable enough to be POTUS.

America’s big problem is not Biden, it’s the menace to democracy posed by Trump (Guardian)

The presidential debate was further proof of the fragility of the country’s constitution. Radical reform is crucial, whoever wins in November... It’s undoubtedly a moment of acute electoral crisis for America. Yet the world should pause and take a deep breath before burying Biden and the Democrats’ re-election hopes. Almost lost in the noise was the hideously repulsive performance of Trump himself. He looked more like a predator than a president, less candidate, more loathsome, reptilian bully. He lied persistently and without a blush. For him, all policy is prejudice. The debate was a timely reminder of how dangerous this man is...

Wonder what Al Gore is doing these days? Former two-term VP. Nobel Peace Prize winner (climate!). Claim to presidency at least as strong as VP Harris's -- in 2000, Gore won the popular vote over GW Bush by some 500,000 vote. He's 76, though, and unmarried -- however, his longterm girlfriend is mature and presentable. Traditional Dem, from the south -- might appeal to independents, enviros, anyone who thinks he was robbed of the presidency by Supreme Court?

Gore-Harris ticket? Harris might have to wait another four years for her shot at presidency? (I'm sure she'd do fine as president, but the country cannot take a chance right now that some knuckle-dragging voters would prefer tRump over a woman...)

Morning Joe, James Carville, Bill Maher and The NY Times editorial board are saying Biden needs to step down. These are all Democratic Party media shills.

Even if you think Biden still has it altogether people on the fence who watched the debate the other day are as far as the Democratic Party trending the wrong way now. All the above who have been carrying water for Biden up until now are suggesting pulling the plug on him now. It ain't a good look for a political party that already looked kind of on the ropes.

Biden's family urges him to 'keep fighting' as donors look for alternatives
Mike Memoli and Monica Alba | June 30, 2024

...During a tense call with a group of about 40 of Biden’s top financial backers {Sunday}, campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez laid out what could and could not be done with the campaign’s infrastructure if Biden were to step aside while emphasizing throughout the call that he had no intention of doing so.

Most of the campaign’s significant war chest would fall to Vice President Kamala Harris ... Only a smaller pool of money would be kept by the Democratic National Committee.

... Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., who joined for part of the call, emphasized that the process would be “messy” and predicted that Harris would ultimately end up as the nominee.

Sunday’s call was just one of a series of similar conversations top Biden advisers and campaign leaders have been holding with Democratic officials and donors after Biden’s halting debate performance rattled the party elite...

The Daily Beast with an article on Gretchen Whitmer. Just the title----I won't run but Joe Biden has lost Michigan after debate.

If Whitmer is saying Michigan is gone she's pretty much saying he's going to lose the election. Though there are possible other significant reasons that could happen in Michigan she's singling out Biden's catastrophic debate performance. That performance sent shock waves across the nation. The possible insidious thing about what Whitmer is also saying is it may also signal the Democratic Party if it loses the election is going to just blame the candidate and not look hard at its own policies and internal corruption. Whatever though---it's a canary in the coal mine moment.

Behind the Curtain: Trump's imperial presidency in waiting
Jim VandeHei, Mike Allen | 2 July 2024

...the restraints of Congress and the courts are dramatically looser than during his first term

To hear Trump and his allies tell it, this is how early 2025 would unfold if he wins:

1. ...set up vast camps and deport millions of people in the U.S. illegally. He could invoke the Insurrection Act and use troops to lock down the southern border.

2. ...fire potentially tens of thousands of civil servants ... replace many of them with pre-vetted loyalists.

3. ... centralize power over the Justice Department, historically an independent check on presidential power ... nominate a trusted loyalist for attorney general ... target and even imprison critics ... federal cases against him cease...

4. Many of the Jan. 6 convicts could be pardoned ... Investigations of the Bidens would begin.

5. ... 10% tariffs on most imported goods, igniting a possible trade war and risking short-term inflation...

6. ... Justices Clarence Thomas, 76, and Sam Alito, 74, would retire ... If Trump were to win and the two oldest justices retired, five of the nine justices would have been handpicked by Trump. {replacements would be in their 40s}

Top Democrats privately predict Republican majorities in the House and Senate if Biden loses... {few R critics, weakened} ... overwhelmingly Trump-friendly Senate and House...

I don't disagree that it will probably be Biden's name on the ticket in November. I wouldn't say it would be a slam dunk but probably 80% if I were to bet. It depends on how desperate things get for top democratic functionaries and donors in the next couple/few weeks. But it would be very tough for just anyone to step in for Biden with the exception of Kamala Harris. There's not much time and people with presidential ambitions such as Whitmer or Newsom would have a daunting task getting momentum and it might even hurt their chances for 2024 and politicians do always calculate what they think is best for them.

That said and again to Whitmer when she says Michigan is gone after that debate you better believe her---she would know and if Michigan is gone Biden's climbing a real mountain then. He needs Michigan badly and if he doesn't get it the math says he's going to need to steal some states and that would be very difficult in normal times but in these times it's nigh on impossible. You have to win the swing states particularly the ones with the most electoral votes or you're just not going to win in November.

Also it wouldn't surprise me if that was the last debate. Trump was reported already reluctant for the first one and Biden had such a catastrophic performance Donald might be just fine with leaving voters with Biden and his Sleepy Joe bad impression. Another thing is that polls are coming out soon and if they're really bad for Biden it's going to have an effect on lots of down ballot races.

So hypothetically if Biden wanted to head things off and get there before Trump got in he could issue an executive order to suspend the constitution and arrest all sitting members of the opposition party (including Donald)......maybe even execute a few with or without trial and it's okay with the Supreme Court? .....and again hypothetically Biden could arrest and/or replace and/or execute all or some of the Supreme Court justices too? (wouldn't that be hilarious?) and all that's good according to Mr. Roberts and friends? What I know about police is they do whatever who's in power tells them to do and if whoever's in power tells them to crack heads it's like Christmas in July. If that is the case then Joe might want to think about because I think Donald will.

“If the Biden family decides that President Biden will not run for re-election, the mechanisms for replacing him on ballots vary by state,” reads the memo. “There is the potential for pre-election litigation in some states that would make the process difficult and perhaps unsuccessful.”
