Well written and researched, fair and balanced account of Andrew Jackson and the Creek Indian War in the southeast of the USA.
When I was a young kid my grandfather, who lived in central Alabama by the Talladega National Forest took us during a summer visit to see Horseshoe Bend where the ultimate battle in this war took place, so it was nice to finally read the history of the event that I didn't get much out of back then. Death Of A Liar: A Hamish Macbeth Mystery by M. C. Beaton

My wife and I stumbled across the Hamish Macbeth television series a while back and enjoyed it.
I found this book on my list of to read and didn't realize it was a Macbeth book until I picked it up from the Library.
I was slightly disappointed. Didn't really care for any of the characters and there were way to many characters and subplots. Of course this is late in the series and maybe the earlier books are better. this was a fairly quick read and I stayed with it, with a modicum of interest, but probably won't be going back to these.

The Origins Of The Second World War: Second Edition With A Reply To The Critics by A. J. P. Taylor

Had this on my shelf, so when the War Room Challenge came around to WWII for August I thought "Why Not?"
Apparently this book was quite controversial at the time, seemingly making out that Hitler wasn't such a bad guy after all.
It was full of the treaties and political maneuverings that lead from WWI to the beginning of WWII.
Kind of dry in my opinion, but I'm not much of one for politics, I'm sure I could have found a more interesting book (to me). Others might enjoy it.

This is a funny little collection of the first three books about a Asterix a little cartoon Gaul who fights the Romans and has misadventures with druids, magic, warriors and other historical characters.
This was read in honor of our friend Anita who passed away recently. She enjoyed reading these and brought them back to my attention. The Last Hurrah: Sterling Price's Missouri Expedition Of 1864 by Kyle S. Sinisi

Read For The War Room Challenge September: The Civil War. This was a very interesting book centering on my home state Missouri, I travel by and through a lot of the battle sites mentioned in this book, but never knew much about them so I chose this book to learn more. Well written and researched, this tells about Sterling Price who led an army of Confederates up from Arkansas into Missouri, hoping to take Missouri for the Confederacy. Missouri was very much fought over during the war, most of her settlers had migrated here from the southern states. After a round about trip through the state, he was finally driven back south into Arkansas again. It was a rough time with most of Missouri being ravaged by the war. Very interesting read.

True Crime Explicit: Volume 11: The Nomadic Devil: The True Story Of Israel Keyes America's Most Methodical Serial Killer Who Planted Murder Caches Nationwide by Genoveva Ortiz & True Crime 7

This was sent to me as an Advance Reader Copy through the Early Reviewers.
This was ok as far as true crime books go, interesting ideas, but not enough meat to the story, excuse the pun. There just weren't much details to go on as I assume from the story Keyes didn't talk much, so it's hard to tell what is true and what is speculation on the author's part. I mean the murders they talk about are interesting and his background is interesting but he spends most of the book traveling from here to there and not really doing much it seems that can be detailed. Interesting read but not enough details/evidence and no experts or police information to provide evidence.

The Shadow by James Patterson & Brian Sitts

So much promise...
I was excited when I heard about this book. I love all the old radio shows and movies and thought this would be a fun read. Then when I read that it involved bringing the classic Shadow character into the present day through some kind of time travel (actually the future, the main bulk of the story takes place in 2087) I had my doubts but then thought, well this still might be fun.
I have never read a Patterson book and so I got to wondering how he writes so many novels, then I found out apparently he just does an outline and then has a slew of other lesser known authors actually flesh out the story. So I thought, well he sells so many books, they must be good...

Anyway, The Shadow is a wealthy playboy in 1930's New York named Lamont Cranston. He has the ability through training by Tibetan monks to persuade men to do what he wants, as well as to make himself invisible for periods of time. He becomes a character called The Shadow, who fights crime and takes down evil doers.
He is aided by his love interest, socialite Margo Lane. This character was a well known long running radio show back in the 30's and 40's and a series of books and movies.
In the Patterson novel, he and Margo are having dinner at a fancy restaurant where he intends to propose and she intends to tell him they are expecting, when they are poisoned by his arch nemesis Sirhan Khan. Cranston manages to get them out of the restaurant and to the waterfront, where he has a secret lab set up with a waiting scientist who is supposed to have a plan to save them.
Shift to 150 years later, New York is a cesspool, slowly sinking into the water that surrounds it, A few privileged rich people run a heavy police state with starving poor people everywhere living in tent cities in the wilds of central park where no police ever go. A teenage girl at school has gotten a letter from a seedy attorney in town that she has inherited something. To make a long story short, she goes to an old warehouse, meets a scientist and she finds out her inheritance is a body in a glass container, that has been stored in some sort of suspended animation. They bring him back to life and Lamont Cranston is unleashed on the future of New York, only to find out the World President is Khan and he is unleashing a plan to kill off all of the poor people in a big World Day Celebration Feast.

This book has so many open ended story points that never go anywhere. It is 100+ short 1 or 2 paged chapters that reads like an outline, that is never really fleshed out. So disappointing.

Master Of The Art Of Detection by Liese Sherwood-Fabre

Received this through the Early Reviewers program.
At first I was a little disappointed in this book, the first story seemed a little off to me, but as I read more and got into it I enjoyed this book more. It seems like everyone and his brother has written a Sherlock Holmes story or book these days and so I felt after reading the first story, a sense of dread. But as I continued, I got more interested in the stories, and grew to like them. They are enjoyable, and while I figured out one or two on my own they were fun short reads. I would recommend for some light enjoyable entertaining reading.

The Purple Cloud by M. P. Shiel

Found in a box of books in my basement. Forgot where I got this. Interesting read, but pretty dry and this author never met a word he didn't like. Paragraphs and sentences run on and on with description. Apparently this was written around 1901 and is considered a classic. A man Adam Jeffson joins an expedition to the North Pole and while there a strange purple cloud travels the globe killing off all of humanity. So when he returns, he is the last man alive. He then spends years traveling the globe and blowing up and burning cities, I guess because he can. Kind of a strange read.

The Autobiography Of Santa Claus: A Revised Edition Of The Christmas Classic The Christmas Chronicles by Jeff Guinn

This book made me feel good. I bought this when it first came out in 2006, as a Christmas story to read to my daughter at bedtime. I think it was a little too old for her and kind of went over her head, I frankly didn't care for it and don't remember if we ever finished it or not. Present day, found it still on my shelf and as it's December, I thought why not give it a go as a quick read. It's billed as being told to author Jeff Guinn by the real Santa, a fact that I think put me off the first time.
Anyway, found myself enjoying it this time as a quick, effervescent trip through World History and Christmas History with Santa and a cast of famous historical characters going along for the ride. Light hearted and fun and you might even learn a thing or too about the traditions behind the legends of Christmas.
