In which Amb. Chas Freeman, diplomat's diplomat (literally the author of the entry for "Diplomacy" in The Encyclopaedia Brittanica), and unwitting source (as he reveals here), of George H.W. Bush's 1991 quote heralding a post-Soviet "new world order," provides a comprehensive overview of how the U.S.'s (increasingly diplomacy-free and strategy-free) foreign policy over the past three-plus decades has succeeded in uniting most of the world against us and brought us to disgrace and the brink of total disaster.

>1 davidgn: Definitely seems like the United States since Iraq/Afghanistan has been creating more and more adversaries around the world and that these adversaries are coalescing against us and also finding other allies through their actual use of diplomacy.....that our hypocrisy as far as the Middle East particularly the genocide that we've aided and abetted in Gaza has undermined our credibility worldwide and that many if not most of the nations of the world see us now as a loose cannon and not trustworthy. That seems pretty much what Mr. Freeman is going on about. Speaking of Israel again....they seem to be running our State Dept. for us.....that many of our congressional leaders are willing to back an attack on Lebanon and even Iran.
Yoav Gallant yesterday told American officials that Israel could bomb Lebanon into the Stone Age as if that's something to strive for. The truth is that after almost 9 months the IDF has completely failed to destroy or even significantly hurt Hamas a much weaker opponent in a much smaller territory notwithstanding. It's bluster in other words and though the IDF would certainly have air superiority the damage that Hezbollah could do to the Israeli state might be almost as significant even without that air superiority. Israel is a country of 15 million souls and only about half of them are 'the chosen people'....the other half unwanted. Israel is now going to begin conscripting the Orthodox to fight in the IDF. It's an issue that will almost certainly have deep ramifications but it's also telling in the losses that the IDF has suffered not only personnel but also speaks to the damage being done to Israel's economy. As unsustainable as all that looks to be Netanyahu as head of the Israel govt. needs to war to stay in power.....but other than for his own personal agenda the war he's talking about with Lebanon or Iran would be wars without any diplomatic lead up and so really without purpose. His war against the civilians of Palestine is simply a genocidal purpose. I'll also not that Turkey's Erdogan has expressed that Turkey will stand with the Lebanese. That the Biden administration and the US congress continues to support Israel's every whim is leading us towards a quagmire and losing us friends fast even as that same Israeli regime is at work to depose the Biden presidency. The Biden administration is weak and clueless. The global south is pretty much 100% against us and Asia is lining up that way too. Freeman talks about the rise of China.....transactions between China and Russia not around US currency and the possibility sometime in the near future that other countries find another go to currency apart from the dollar. That is just another thing that seems inevitable.

Probably not what was behind the title of this thread, but nevertheless changes to the UN Security Council would be part of a new world order.

Guterres calls for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council (New Humanitarian)
UN chief António Guterres has called for Africa to be given a permanent seat at the UN Security Council, a reform aimed at making the body more representative and globally credible. Addressing the council on Monday, Guterres said the current composition of the Council was anachronistic and undermined the body’s legitimacy. “We cannot accept that the world’s preeminent peace and security body lacks a permanent voice for a continent of well over a billion people,” said Gutteres. “Nor can we accept that Africa’s views are undervalued on questions of peace and security, both on the continent and around the world.” The five permanent members of the Council – China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US – represent international power dynamics at the end of World War Two, when colonial rule still largely prevailed...

Would be better to take away the veto rights of each and every one of the 5 permanent members of the Security Council---make the whole point of that council moot. The blocking of resolutions that happen when you have 80-90-95% of the other nations voting for a resolution is obscene. This special status for pretty much the worst offenders of human rights is about what it is.
