Disposing of Books

I never thought I'd have to ask anyone this, but I have a large quantity of books that I am looking to dispose of.

For context, my mother has published a number of books and, since her passing, I've uncovered a reasonable number of each of her books that I don't know what to do with - we're talking in some cases of 30+ copies of some volumes, no doubt sent to her from the publisher. As well as her own books, I also have a number written by her father as well.

It feels very wrong to just throw them away. Some of them are older editions of her textbook, so I doubt any current students will want those either.

Has anyone ever encountered this sort of issue? I'm inclined to keep as many as I can, but space is at a premium...

Is there a charity bookstore or book sale in your area to which you could donate them?

Nobody wants old editions of textbooks as books. Possibly as craft materials.

May depend on topic, I find some older history texts retain value.

I have a similar problem. We have lots of old science textbooks. They are all out of date. I don't know if they can be recycled but it is a shame to put them in the trash or the recycling.

I haven't had to dispose of a large amount of books at once, just several at a time. At least for me, I've been able to donate them to local libraries for book sales, give them to a local thrift store, or go to a local bookstore for a buyback.
The textbooks may be tough. Only additional thing I can think of for those is if there's any tutoring service or a local educational institution that may be in need of textbooks but aren't too picky on how current they may be.

Thanks so much for the insights - I really appreciate it.
We do have the Lifeline Bookfest twice a year, which is apparently the largest secondhand book sale in the southern hemisphere - I usually buy all my books there and I donate my old books straight back to them in most cases.

I was a bit leery of doing that in this case just because of the sheer number of the same book, but that would be the ideal outcome if university libraries or alumni groups aren't interested. I know her university wasn't interested, but I might try some of the other local campuses.

Cheers all! (^_^)V

>7 krazy4katz: You're welcome. Thanks. It can certainly be tough, especially with books that are more specialized or niche.
