‘Good Moral Character?’ Holding Trump to the Same Standards as the Immigrants He Vilifies
Edgar Chen and Dan Ross | August 28, 2024

...Ironically, the U.S. political system sets lower standards for those who seek to lead the country than to join it. But an examination of Trump’s history through the prism of the U.S. immigration system is not just a hypothetical exercise. It demonstrates the stringency of the current system, the level of vetting to which immigrants are subject, and that Trump’s relentless equivalence of immigration with criminality is baseless...

coherence bias
How the Media Sanitizes Trump’s Insanity
Parker Molloy / 4 Sept 2024

The political press’s efforts to rationalize Trump’s incoherent statements are eroding our shared reality and threatening informed democracy ... As Trump’s statements grow increasingly unhinged in his old age, major news outlets continue to reframe his words, presenting a dangerously misleading picture to the public...

... This “sanewashing” of Trump’s statements isn’t just poor journalism; it’s a form of misinformation that poses a threat to democracy. By continually reframing Trump’s incoherent and often dangerous rhetoric as conventional political discourse, major news outlets are failing in their duty to inform the public and are instead providing cover for increasingly erratic behavior from a former—and potentially future—president.

The consequences of this journalistic malpractice extend far beyond misleading headlines. By laundering Trump’s words in this fashion, the media is actively participating in the erosion of our shared reality. When major news outlets consistently present a polished version of Trump’s statements, they create an alternate narrative that exists alongside the unfiltered truth available on social media and in unedited footage...

Donald Trump’s Springfield Scapegoat
Molly Jong-Fast | September 16, 2024

Haitian immigrants in Ohio are just the latest target in Trump’s long-running ploy to convince his supporters they’re under siege.

...the former president has kept scapegoating ethnic and religious minorities going through his first, second, and third presidential campaigns, including Muslims (by blaming them for domestic terrorism, culminating in his notorious Muslim travel ban); Chinese people (by blaming them for the COVID crisis); Mexican people (by blaming them for the fentanyl crisis); Venezuelans (whose gangs he’s accused of taking over the town of Aurora, Colorado); and most recently, of course, Haitians...

SERIES 3 EPISODE 35: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN
A-Block (1:44) I wish these were metaphors.

In his latest fugue-state multi-hour you-know-how-old-he-is-he's-206 campaign speech at Savannah, Trump first literally drooled on himself in the middle of a sibilant "S" and a scant 45 minutes later revealed that he just found out that Russia beat Napoleon AND Hitler ...

CNN's coverage of this latest evidence that Trump's cheese has slid off his Ritz Cracker? “Trump focuses on economy at stop in battleground Georgia.” The term is sane-washing. If Biden had done this the replays would still be running on a loop on CNN.

And this doesn't even get to his insanity on issues of substance: the stalker language towards women. The first oblique promise to jail people who criticize the Supreme Court. The continued insistence he will send the legal migrants in Ohio who are from Haiti "back" to Venezuela because he evidently thinks that's where Haiti IS...

Peter Baker {NYT} @peterbakernyt | 10:18 AM · Oct 6, 2024 {X}:

According to a @nytimes computer analysis, Trump’s rally speeches now last an average of 82 minutes compared with 45 minutes in 2016. Proportionately, he uses 13% more all-or-nothing terms like “always” and “never” than he did 8 years ago.

Similarly, he uses 32% more negative words than positive words now, compared with 21% in 2016, which can be another indicator of cognitive change. And he uses swear words 69% more often than he did when he first ran, a trend that could reflect what experts call disinhibition.

Trump has always been discursive and often untethered to truth, but with the passage of time his speeches have grown darker, harsher, longer, angrier, less focused, more profane and increasingly fixated on the past.

Trump’s Speeches, Increasingly Angry and Rambling, Reignite the Question of Age
With the passage of time, the 78-year-old former president’s speeches have grown darker, harsher, longer, angrier, less focused, more profane and increasingly fixated on the past, according to a review of his public appearances over the years.

'Very sinister': Trump stuns Republicans and Dems with on-air 'bad genes' rant
Kathleen Culliton | October 7, 2024

...Trump, during an interview with conservative commentator Hugh Hewitt, relied on what critics called the rhetoric of eugenics — the discredited philosophy behind Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's attempt to exterminate Jewish people — when he railed against undocumented immigrants.

"Many of them murdered far more than one person," Trump declared. "A murderer, I believe this, it's in their genes. And we got a lot of bad genes in our country right now."...

Trump Is Speaking Like Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini
Anne Applebaum | 10 Oct 2024

The former president has brought dehumanizing language into American presidential politics.

... These phrases have not been put on posters and banners at random in the final weeks of an American election season. With less than three weeks left to go, most candidates would be fighting for the middle ground, for the swing voters. Trump is doing the exact opposite. Why? There can be only one answer: because he and his campaign team believe that by using the tactics of the 1930s, they can win. The deliberate dehumanization of whole groups of people; the references to police, to violence, to the “bloodbath” that Trump has said will unfold if he doesn’t win; the cultivation of hatred not only against immigrants but also against political opponents—none of this has been used successfully in modern American politics.

But neither has this rhetoric been tried in modern American politics. Several generations of American politicians have assumed that American voters, most of whom learned to pledge allegiance to the flag in school, grew up with the rule of law, and have never experienced occupation or invasion, would be resistant to this kind of language and imagery. Trump is gambling—knowingly and cynically—that we are not.

Doctor Who Wrote ‘Goldwater Rule’ Says He Would Recommend Dementia Tests For Trump
S.V. Date | Oct 22, 2024

{Allen Dyer, a retired George Washington University psychiatry professor}, an author of the 1973 American Psychiatric Association standard {a ban against offering diagnoses and “professional opinions” about people whom psychiatrists had not personally examined}, says it was never meant to stop doctors from expressing their opinions based on public information ... if he were Trump’s doctor, he would order a full battery of tests to determine the cause of what he believes could be the former president’s dementia. “He seems to be progressively cognitively impaired” ...

... To Dyer, Smolar {Andrew Smolar, a Pennsylvania psychiatrist who has had numerous patients of Trump’s age and apparent condition} and others, Trump’s behavior in his public remarks are ticking off the boxes on the list of symptoms warning of dementia.

Back in October, more than 230 doctors, nurses, and other healthcare workers accused Trump of lying and of being probably physically unfit for serving in the Oval Office.

Notice how many names suggest the healthcare workers are women? They'll be some of the hardest hit by another Trump administration.

Them, plus all of the immigrant doctors and surgeons in the who managed to hang onto their careers during his first term of office. Rural areas of the country are especially dependent on immigration, because specialists born in these areas can't afford the education for the jobs. (It's not only the farm workers and all the maintenance workers who are needed!)

Loosening the certifications and regulations that ensure public safety will spreading dangerous lies about health won't help, neither.
