Spam Fix Bugs and Infelicities

This is a general thread about site bugs caused (or possibly caused) by the spam attack over the weekend.

For that see https://www.librarything.com/topic/363400

Give LT staff a few moments to add the bugs we know about here. Then go ahead and tell us anything else you see or are concerned about.

Other staff are working up a list, but I'm going to post a few things:

* The wiki is back up and running. This wasn't related, but it did break over the weekend.(1)
* Some members reported some problems with phantom books. This can happen when database servers get behind. We have reset something and seen that this fixed it.

1. The wiki, like the blog, are on completely different computers, with no connection to the rest of LibraryThing's infrastructure. We do this so that hackers can use a bug in their popular, high-target software to get into LibraryThing.

Okay, I've run through Talk posts since this Saturday, and here are the bugs that we're currently working on that may or may not be related to the weekend's issues:

https://www.librarything.com/topic/363377 - LT blog link error

https://www.librarything.com/topic/363404 - HTML encoded apostrophe, from site search --> "Add books" link in left-hand menu

https://www.librarything.com/topic/363395 - Overzealous \ slashes showing up on Awards pages

https://www.librarything.com/topic/363374 (also https://www.librarything.com/topic/363363) - Quick Links showing blank/empty sources in the list, both on work pages and on the edit quick links page.

I'm hunting around for any new issues, and will add them here.

I have a large queue of books to import that have been patiently waiting since Friday. What is your advice on this.

Scratch the queue and wait until there's an all clear?
Leave it and see if it works? (and if so by when).

Thank you.

Pat M

Miscreants are overwhelming our lives.

This one should be fixed.

Not sure if this is part of the umbrella of caution, but I can't get genres to stick. I can open the dialog box on the work page, but save doesn't do anything.

Yes, I think that's probably another one—a JSON encoding problem.

HTML encoded apostrophe, from site search Fixed.

BTW, the "Quick Links" section on the work page has been removed entirely for now.

Is this one of the infelicities: I can’t use Organize on the Awards page to edit the stages (for the Booker Prize, the shortlist of which was announced today). If not, I’ll post to Bug Collectors).

Thanks. Posted to https://www.librarything.com/topic/363411 . I know what's wrong there. We'll get to it soon.

>2 timspalding: psst I think you've got an infelicitous typo in your last sentence of this post about why you keep the blog and wiki on a different machine. Unless it's gallows humor and not a typo, in which case you earned it today I guess.

Thanks for the genre fix. Sorry for the extra work. How many millions if not billions lost every year in time spent chasing this kind of damage. Sick.

I've posted a further thing found for that awards one, as a reply in the same topic: https://www.librarything.com/topic/363395#8624852

Thanks. I think Lucy got them.

We are changing a lot of beams around here. We think it's going to work better, but some floors may collapse :)

Please don't stand under anything that might collapse. We'd miss you.

Shore up those floors before you move any beams!

That explains all the banging and knocking! Some of us are trying to read, hmmmph!

Is this why there aren't links to Amazon, WorldCat, etc. on work pages anymore?

There's a bug report here about common knowledge changing some accented characters, possibly relating to the recent spam fixing?: https://www.librarything.com/topic/363470

Edited to add:
There's also one about published reviews, (that Tim has answered on, linking here for cross-reference): https://www.librarything.com/topic/363492

>30 SandraArdnas: Not really. The majority don't work

I should have explained: the table was basically destroyed by the spammers, so we had to recreate it from a backup that was made about a year ago. Not everything will be there, but it was the best we could do quickly.

>33 knerd.knitter: No problem, I just wanted to make sure it's known the majority of links do not work yet. Not a coder, but even I understand there must be a ton of work cleaning up now. Thank you and the rest of LT team
