A couple of days ago, I added published reviews (from Bryn Mawr Classical Review) to two books: Cicero, De haruspicum responsis: Introduction, Text, Translation, and Commentary and The Trojan Horse and Other Stories: Ten Ancient Creatures That Make Us Human. But after I saved them, the reviews didn't appear on the work pages. I came back to them today, and they still don't. I tried adding the review to the first book again, and no joy.

This may have something to do with the weekend spamming: https://www.librarything.com/topic/363400 Perhaps a side effect of the fix?

Published reviews should now be live (thank you, knerd.knitter), if you want to give them a test! Thanks for your patience.

When I went to bed last night, I had 6 reviews for my latest Early Reviewer giveaway; now I have 8, but I can only see 7. Any explanation would be helpful info for my record-keeping. Was it a fake review, a copied review, an insulting review, a private review? Who?

>6 mmarty164:
What book was it? "My latest giveaway" is not helpful.
Note that published reviews "are for reviews published in established publishing outlets". Customer reviews, personal blog reviews, and the like are not considered "published reviews", so if the missing review was one of those, it might have been deleted.

>6 mmarty164: And if you mean just normal reviews despite posting in this question - if a user deletes their copy of the book, the review is also deleted. The same happens if they take their library private I think. And any user can delete any of their reviews at any time (or edit it).

>8 AnnieMod: ER reviews are supposed to show even from private accounts.

This is probably Sex with Jesus! and refers to member reviews, not published reviews. Given the ones that remain, I would think he would prefer fewer reviews rather than more.

I would prefer all of the (30) reviewers leave "honest" reviews. Seven of the 10 July reviewers missed their 3-month deadline. Of the 20 August potential reviewers (deadline Nov. 26), as of last night, only 3 had left a review. At 4 this morning, a 4th reviewer had left a review and added the book to their collection. Around 8 or 9 this morning, a 5th review showed at the top (3+5=8 reviews) but another person had not added a book to their collection and only 7 reviews show. Of course, if someone (Who?) added the book to their books, wrote a review, and then deleted it (between 4 and 9 a.m.), that's a possibility (but then wouldn't it show 7 reviews, not 8?). Sex with Jesus. Yes, sorry, if this thread is for "published official reviews"--New York Times--not for Early Reviewer reviews... then I am in the wrong discussion thread.

>9 MarthaJeanne: Yes, from my spring giveaway Bio Marty Vita, I had two reviews that I couldn't see until I logged into LibraryThing--then I could see them (private libraries).

>7 lilithcat: I intentionally wrote "my latest giveaway" because I was trying not to get into trouble for self-promotion touting in a thread not intended for that--lol.

If a LibraryThing person, this morning, decided to count the "official" Midwest Book Review blurb as the 8th review, then that possibly could explain everything... perhaps. (Thanks for the 3rd thumbs-down on my similar books' recommendations. I presume whoever did so has read Job, Philebus, Phaedo, and Sex with Jesus--or not.)

I note that the "published review" on the Sex with Jesus page is from the Midwest Book Review: https://www.midwestbookreview.com/get_rev.htm ), which charges a fee for a guaranteed book review.
Note that LibraryThing does not allow reviews from pay-for-review services, either in "member reviews" or in "published reviews."
Since it's impossible to tell whether the review posted was part of their Reader Fee Review Program, I'm inclined to say that it violates that rule. Could staff weigh in on that?

From nine months ago, or so, I think I remember reading that LibraryThing "accepts" "published reviews" from Kirkus ($600) and from Midwest Book Review. I haven't done a Kirkus Review so far. I think the e-books submitted to Midwest Book Review are charged a $50 fee. I did not submit an e-book to Midwest Book Review. I submitted two print copies via mail of Bio Marty Vita to Midwest Book Review--no fee other than printing and mailing costs--in March 2024. It was not accepted for review. On April 10, 2024, I submitted two print copies of Sex with Jesus via mail and it was immediately accepted for review--no fee other than printing and mailing costs. I think Midwest Book Review only accepts books that they are initially inclined to believe "might" be interesting and ones that can be given a positive review. If a book turns out not to be up to par, I think no review is given.

>6 mmarty164: It looks like 9 reviews have been posted on this work page in total, with two deleted. I'm afraid we don't have any further information about why they were deleted. The review number in the stats bar at the top of the page should reflect 7, but it looks like it got behind on recalculating. We're working on that.

When it comes to published reviews, generally speaking we do not accept pay-for-review schemes, reviews on other review sites, blogs, etc. That said, when it comes to Kirkus Reviews, we make an exception, because their reviews are used by so many librarians. Midwest Book Review is also acceptable, because many of their reviews are not paid/purchased, and we have no way of determining which is which.
