2024 Halloween Treasure Hunt

1AbigailAdams26
Oct 17, 1:24 pm

It's October, and the Halloween Hunt has returned!

The object of the game is to solve our clues (in verse!) and go to the LibraryThing page each clue is talking about.

Go HERE for the hunt.

You have two weeks—until Thursday October 31st at 11.59 pm Eastern Time—to find all the ghosts hidden around the site and gather them all together into one hauntourage.

Use this thread to brag, ask for and give hints, etc.

We will be awarding profile badges to anyone who finds at least two ghosts, and anyone who finds all 12 will be entered into a drawing for a LibraryThing prize.

Helpful tips

Please, use the spoiler tag when posting hints or suggestions. Here's how:

To use the spoiler tag, type the following before whatever you'd like to hide:

<spoiler>

And this, at the end of what's hidden:

Hooray for another hunt! However, it seems as if the glitch that was around last time is still there. I’m not getting banners when I get to the right page, but when I update the hunt page, the clues are checked off.

Oct 17, 2:21 pm

>2 PawsforThought: Is this happening for all clues, or specific ones? If the latter, which ones?

4lorax
Oct 17, 2:36 pm

Incidentally:

There is a clue where the solution page has the same problem as one that was the same type of page in the previous hunt. If you have a situation where you're certain you have the right page but don't see the banner (even when you go back to the hunt page), try refreshing the solution page - if it's right, the banner will flash up for a second and it will register when you go back to the hunt page.

(AbigailAdams26 I can send you a message with the specifics, if you like).

Still not finding # 4, # 6 and # 7

# 4 - I get that it is "more than" Samhain, but I'm still not finding it. Does that word even appear in the work? Or should I be looking at tags, or movies or common knowledge?

# 6 - I'm stumped

# 7 - I've tried singular and plurals of three most common names for this place. I've looked in common knowledge and in books. I've clicked on various places. Never get a banner.

Finally for #4 I got the great idea to look in the library of the smarty-pants who wrote the clue.

25GraceCollection
Edited: Oct 18, 12:25 am

Please don't just give me the answers. I'm looking for hints, or 'you're headed in the right direction,' or 'you're barking up the wrong tree completely.'

Ghost 4... Edit: Found it I searched for the book and clicked on it from the results page, and that gave me the ghost. Which seems weird, because the search brought me to the librarything.com/work/numbers page, and I specifically edited out the /book/numbers part after clicking through on Zeph's library, and it didn't give it to me then...

Ghost 10 I thought this was Kiki's Delivery Service, but that didn't ping for me either, so... Is this an early review book? Or is it in the library of the clue writer? There are just so many picture books that are Halloween themed, I don't know where to start... If it's in Abigail's library, could someone link me to that library? I'm not sure I know which staff profile is hers.

Ghost 11 This has got to be something from the Teach Yourself series, right? But what language are vampires supposed to speak? I tried Romanian, but that didn't work, so I tried several general language books from that series, with no luck there, either. I've never known of any stereotypical 'vampire language,' am I missing something here?

Up to 10 now, stuck on #5 and #7.

I think #7 is related to a famous quote from Andrew Marvell, but I'm not getting it.

#5 is rather trickier as I don't read horror as a rule, so apart from the obvious author and his sprog, I'm stumped. The clue almost suggests a children's book series but that's not it... Apart from Roger Zelazny & Doranna Durgin, I have little dog-related fiction, and what I have isn't exactly thematic for this hunt.

Please don't just give me the answers. I'm looking for hints, or 'you're headed in the right direction,' or 'you're barking up the wrong tree completely.'

When clue 5 says 'nearby on the shelf,' what exactly is it 'nearby'? Is it 'nearby' alphabetically to the author of the answer to clue 4? Or is this just a phrase contrived for the rhyme? Please don't tell me the answer to the riddle, but can anyone tell me what exactly the author for this clue is 'nearby on the shelf' to?

Hint: There are synonyms for this word, so once you're on the 'tag page' for your first guess, if it isn't right, try looking at related tags on that page. This is how I found the ghost.

This one I probably did about a half on my own, so fairly difficult. I try on my own until it becomes less fun and more frustration, at which point I look for clues others kindly provide. But if you don't feel like hunting them down with clues from others, just do the part where it's still entertaining figuring them on your own. For everyone having trouble with #4 I found it using Google but there are other ways given in this thread. Here are some tips on how to find the answer

Hint one - find Zeph's library, narrow down by searching with a key word from the clue ... "Follow the SUN " . You will need to go to the main page for the book to get the ghost.
Hint two - use Talpa Search and enter the whole clue. There are a number of results and you need to scroll down to find the right book. Just click the L to the right of the result to get to the answer

This is a long post, but I’ve never posted on a TH before. Hope I've used the spoiler settings correctly.

RE: #4 and #12

When I found Ghost #12, I was looking for—and thought I’d found when I got the banner—#4. It kind of works! subject-wise…history of Samhain! When the puzzle/riddle wasn’t crossed out, I simply thought it was a glitch.

It was only later, when I saw that I’d found #12 without “looking,” that I realized I had NOT found #4. Now it was the last ghost I needed, and I used all of the hints, including looking at Zeph’s library, to find it. I specifically saw #4 in the “similar to” part of the home page for another book by the same author.

RE: #4 and #5
I also thought that #5 referred to the author of #4, thus I was looking for authors that wrote scary stories, but started with the letter R.

This was one of the trickier Treasure Hunts I’ve done, but lots of fun, and I learned about Talpa. (Not a place that celebrates Day of the Dead…another “red herring” so-to-speak, for me). Thank you for these engaging and revealing puzzles!

Sorry to say, but this was the first LT Hunt that I found absolutely frustrating and a waste of my time.
I usually can solve most of the clues with my own knowledge and LT search with only a few clues needing help from the talk thread. This Hunt seemed to be a sales pitch for TALPA Search . . . :(
And for some clues that one could get using knowledge of LT, the clue really didn't match the answer all that well, so just added frustration.
Got them all but wish I had spent my time doing other things.
Sorry folks, but hope this isn't a trend of Hunts to come.

Hi there, I'm still missing 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9 10

One thing I'm struggling with is a lot of these clues and hints reference parts of the site I do not know because I'm relatively new. Like finding Zeph's book list I have the ghost now but where would I look for that??? I'd like to know for future reference. Where is the magical place where people work on this collab list of books ? Or the "ER" page? Or the "new feature" ? Any hints for the others would be so helpful. I've forgotten many of the problematic clues but here are a few:
*The answer to the List clue wasn't really the best answer from the previous October Lists (i.e. the clue didn't really match the answer)
*Clues pointing to a singular shouldn't require a plural.
*Several of the banners weren't appearing on a reliable basis.

Just hoping future Hunts are more similar to those I enjoyed in the past than to this one.

I disagree. It wasn't the most obvious answer, but I think it certainly a good enough match.

*Clues pointing to a singular shouldn't require a plural.
Absolutely true. And this problem has been recurrent in clue writing. I think I've encountered it in at least one out of four hunts.

*Several of the banners weren't appearing on a reliable basis.
I didn't have any problems like that this time, and it's been a long while since I had anything like that sort of technical dysfunction in a hunt (although it definitely has happened in the past). But I do see others complaining. Tech issues that present inconsistently are deucedly hard to address, and when the problem is compounded by reporters possibly trying for the wrong solution of a clue, it must be so daunting to diagnose, I could sympathize with an unwillingness to even start--especially in an entertainment peripheral to the site's main functions.

Hi All! The 2024 Halloween Treasure Hunt has now ended. Thank you to all who participated!

We had 1,601 players for this hunt, and 775 players finding at least five clues. The average number of clues found was six.

Our randomly selected winners for the hunt are:

scribe77
CatsandCherryPie
gilroy
historywhiz
simon_carr

Winners: I will be messaging you about your mailing addresses, so we can get your prizes sent out to you!

Participants who found at least two ghosts: Please be aware that badges are awarded manually, and may not appear in your badges for some time.

Regarding the banner: the developers are still aware of the ongoing problems with the banner's appearance, and the fact that dismissing it once sometimes seems to dismiss it forever, despite the member's wishes/preferences. The issue is on the list of things to be looked at, although I have no timeline to give on a resolution.
