Weather (in the Northern hemisphere) will begin to change, so will our gardens.
If we still want flowers, maybe we should create CONTAINER GARDENS

Containers can be both inside and out, hold flowers, plants, and herbs.
The greenery will have garden in winter still seem vibrant wherever it is.

Do you have a container garden?

We actually have members - fuzzi, rabittprincess, MissWatson, majkia, curioussquared, benitastarnd, detailmuse, connie53, cyderry, sallylou61 and EGBERTINA - who have reached their goals! This month they were joined by lindapanzo, Rebecki, si, Jackie_K, Robertgreaves, and formativeage!
Those leading the pack toward their goals are:

atozgrl 96.0%
Cecilturtle 96.0%
clue 95.0%
kac522 94.7%

We have reached our goal now that we have eliminated the inactive members.

But we still have ROOTS TO DIG!

Now that I've reached my goal I might look at some of the weightier tomes on my shelves, but either way I hope to keep contributing towards the group effort even if at a slower pace.

>2 cyderry: I have a few plants in pots, but I've always wanted to tackle something more involved, like putting multiple plants in some kind of planter. I would like to do some real container gardening, I just have to make time to work on it.

Nov 3, 6:35 am

I do have quite a few pots (despite my husband's best efforts); I'll see if I can post a photo later.

My ROOT reading (especially) has been slower than I anticipated this year because 1) I got a new home library built ie put some shelves into a small room and I thought I'd save money by moving my old shelves in, too. Unfortunately - just as I'd cleaned and polished all the shelves and almost finished cleaning each book and putting them in the new library - I discovered that the old shelves have something suspicious on their surfaces which consensus opinion deems to be mould. Grr. So I shut the doors on them to wait until my eczema is under control before attempting to tackle that. That project was also delayed because of 2) my long trip to north America and the UK (long story - see my thread) which also meant that, except for books on my Kindle, I didn't have access to my own books.

I didn't read as much, anyway, while travelling plus I discovered that I don't seem to read very fast on the Kindle. I may have to adjust my expected total for this year.

Nov 3, 10:57 pm

I am now in the new/old house but the move was bumpy at best. I will have to return to Tuscaloosa one more time to pick up a few things, clean the other house, and get the furniture that I did not move to the charities to which I am donating them. All of that means that I will be spending more quality time with recorded books. I have had a huge number of recorded books this last year that I have listened to mostly while driving back and forth. A rough count says that I have listened to 35 books this year.

9benitastrnad
Nov 3, 10:59 pm

I have a rather large container garden each year. They are outdoors on my patio and just because I have moved to Kansas doesn't mean I will stop having my container garden. I will have to have different plants but I do plan on planting about the same number of containers as previously. I love having those plants around me.

Looks like we're crushing our collective goal! Congrats to the folks who have conquered their ROOTs!

Beautiful indoor gardens. I have one in the middle of my living room that brings me great joy during the long Canadian winters.

11MissWatson
Nov 5, 6:21 am

I have some orchids indoors who look a bit straggly, and I do admire people who can keep their plants alive inside the house.

I was away from home for a few days and finished two more books on the last day of October, but we can just as well count them for November.

Nov 11, 5:06 pm

I have about two dozen pot plants inside and many on my outdoor deck. It is quite a process maintaining them but they do provide pleasure.
Finally my first root for the month, A Single Thread by Tracy Chevalier. Still way off achieving my goal and probably won't get much reading done this week as heading away with my daughter and two grandchildren for five days.

My first ROOT for November is the excellent collection of short stories edited by Glory Edim. The book was On Girlhood: 15 Stories from the Well-Read Black Girl Library and I am so glad I finally got around to reading this short book. The fiction in it was worth the time it took to read them. Edim was featured on NPR's Morning Edition today.

Toot! Toot! I reached my goal of 50/50 with La mort entre autres by Philip Kerr.
Ironically I had already read it in 2016 (I was wondering why parts sounded vaguely familiar - duh) but well, now I can definitely pass it on to another reader.
Will continue with ROOTs since I've been so remiss and accumulated a whole pile of books this year.

Hoping to get a few more ROOTs in by year's end. As of now, I'm in a nursing home bed recuperating from surgery from a 73yo hip that was broken October 11. My reading is strictly Kindle and video Great Courses until I get home -- I hope this week. Definitely won't make my goal of 50 with this RL intervention, but hoping for a couple or three more at least.

I'm having problems with the TickerFactory website. The page where I would update my count keeps recycling and won't let me update the count. I can't even create a new ticker because of the webpage recycling like mad.
Am I the only one with the issue? I tried MS Edge and Chrome browsers.

Any suggestions?

28Robertgreaves
Nov 17, 4:47 pm

>27 ca_dmv: You could also try Firefox as your browser. If that doesn't work, try using the private window option with each browser. I usually find that one of these options will work, but which one in any particular case you can only find by trial and error. If all else fails, try another computer.

I finished another ROOT this month - actually a couple of weeks ago - English Creek by Ivan Doig. This was excellent literary reading. The writing is wonderful and Doig captures the life of a small western town perfectly. The narrator is a 14 year old boy contemplating the family conflicts that have arisen due to his brother's leaving home to pursue a romance that his family opposed. I enjoyed reading this novel, but realize that it is not for everyone. I plan on reading the second in the series later this month.

Home from rehab for about a week now. Cheli had suggested on the October thread that I could use ebooks in rehab from my broken hip. I had definitely been using my Kindle reader on my smart phone, but I don't count ebooks for ROOTing purposes – though I do include them in the 75 Book, Reading Through Time, and (where big enough) in the Big Fat Book challenges. I'll be switching over more to treeware now that I'm home, but I'll be lucky to make 40/50 for this year's ROOTing. Sometimes real life intervenes.

Incidentally, while doing LT clean-up for all the entries I'd missed over the past several weeks, I noticed that my ticker had gone ker-plunk. I just put up a new one and linked to it on the ROOT TICKERS page. Hope that fixes it for you, Cheli.
