What are the stores this year? And which ones charge shipping? Thanks!

ETA: OK, I see in the FAQs, this: "Non-US members should choose Blackwell's (UK & International), "

So that would be me. Do they charge shipping?

ETA (again!): Guess I should read ALL of the FAQs before asking. Looking a little further I see this: "Blackwell's (UK & International): All Santees will get exactly what they've paid in."

Are Canadians obligated to order from Kenny's/ Blackwell's? I'd prefer a US option, if possible.

I hope next year you'll consider using Amazon for books, not just for Kindle. I get the appeal of independent stores, but the in-stock selection is so much worse.

6GraceCollection
Edited: Nov 5, 6:58 pm

I know my opinion might not matter as much since I am not planning to participate (except on the help picking thread!), but I really appreciate that Amazon isn't being used. I think their company policies, affect on the environment, and treatment of workers is deplorable, and I find it encouraging that LT isn't willing to trade ethics for convenience.

If I were receiving books, I would (hypothetically) love to see some second-hand sources. Thriftbooks ships internationally,* has high standards for the quality of secondhand books, and has a huge selection. Plus, secondhand books (usually, not always in cases of rare or collectible books) gives more product for the amount of money spent.

*There are some countries that they can't ship to, but according to their website, this is only temporary.

Used books will never work for SantaThing, because the stock can't be guaranteed.

Reminder for readers who request Kindle books from Amazon: If you need to exchange the Kindle book your Santa picked, you cannot do it yourself as you used to be able to do in the past. You have to message the LT helpers who ordered for you and ask them to help you exchange the book. The LT helper has to cancel the original order and send you a link for a new book.

I also never purchase from Amazon because of their appalling ethics and disregard for the environment.
While I love secondhand books I think that would be hard to coordinate under the current SantaThing model.
I work in an Australian school library and we use Readings for many of our purchases. Years ago when I was working in childcare I looked after the owner’s son He is now General Manager himself.
They do a lot of philanthropic work particularly around First Nations and immigrant/refugee literacy and education so very happy with the Australian option.

Any suggestions as to what makes an entry "in good shape" (as per message prompt from staff) for Santathing? What do other pickers like to see in an entry?

Things I find helpful
- A full library
- ratings/reviews - some indication about what you think about specific books, especially those we have in common.
- Suggestions of authors you have read and enjoyed and which you'd like similar works

I find specific wishlist titles less helpful, because part of the joy is finding soemone something new. But it does make it easy to just get specifically what has been requested.

This is widely said, but is not quite accurate. They owned 40%—thorugh Abebooks— before Bowker became a third investor. They own less than 40% now. I am not sure if I'm allowed to say how much, but it's still substantial. I own a majority and have control. I don't need their permission for anything short of a major change to the company that would affect all investors (e.g., LibraryThing is now a casino! I'm borrowing $10m!). Neither Amazon nor Abebooks ask us to do anything. I missed an entire Abebooks CEO we talk so little.

I'm ordering to Canada. Does anyone have any opinions on Blackwell's vs. Kenny's? In particular, does anyone know which tends to have a better selection (or any other reason to pick one over the other)?

I'm not too worried about whether it arrives before Christmas. There will be the $6 shipping charge for Kenny's, but I compared the prices on a few random books, and Kenny's seemed to be cheaper, so it probably comes out to about the same.

I had a lot of fun with this last year--looking forward to it again this year!

Also, I would also find it useful to have my last year's request to work from. Thanks!

Anyone have suggestions for shopping Powells? I’m pretty much an ebook reader and I’ve never shopped there. My “Santee” wants paperbacks from Powells. I’ve checked probably 8 books so far on her wishlist and either they don’t show up as an option to buy “new” on Powells or the new trade paperback is $30. She would end up with maybe 1 1/2 books based on this pricing. Suggestions on how to handle? (Kate you can ignore the message I sent as I forgot about this forum.)

64faerywings
Nov 26, 7:26 pm

Several of the books I'm looking at on Book People are listed as "Out of Stock; Usually Arrives in 7-10 Days". They are still available to "add to cart" and purchase. Would they be safe to add to my chosen books for my Santee? Or should I just avoid them and pick others?

65saroz
Nov 26, 8:51 pm

Ah, Powells - rapidly the bane of my SantaThing experience, with their fluctuating stock and weirdly ineffective new/used filters. One of the books I really want to get my Santee is only available from the "remote warehouse" and must be shipped separately. However, last year I got a whole series of separate shipments for my own Santa, from (IIRC) Blackwells. Is the different warehouses/different shipments going to be a problem for LT?

Also - Powells is saying that it's free shipping for orders over $40, but my Santee has pledged $50 - and LT has already deducted $6 for shipping. Is there a possibility to use the entire $50 now?

66ilovemaine14
Nov 26, 9:02 pm

>65 saroz:

Yes, WHY does the new/used filter not work?!
Good catch about the free shipping. I also have a $50 Powells budget for my Santee and would indeed love to use all of it if that’s an option. I haven’t purchased physical books in quite awhile and they’re so expensive, even the paperbacks!

67saroz
Edited: Nov 26, 9:12 pm

>66 ilovemaine14: It works, but in a way that isn't very conducive toward "window shopping" or gift selecting. Powells always shows the lowest price for a book, which is never the new copy.

Most of the time it's clunky but tolerable. However, I'm looking at public domain classics and it's nightmarish. There are dozens of "editions" of the same book and you know darn well some of them won't be acceptable gifts, even if they are brand new. Yet they rarely ever seem to have new copies of the editions by reputable publishers.

68Kalira
Nov 26, 9:35 pm

Shopping for my Santee today, I, too, have been discovering the bane of attempting to browse at Powell's and their very clunky/sketchy search and filter options! Including, as saroz points up, browsing for a classic that has multiple new editions out from different publishers, some of which I would not feel good about gifting, for sure. >.>

I didn't get through adding all the relevant books from my kindle last night. If i do a rush of cataloguing the various books I've never got around to, will the "your Santee may have this book already" automatically update?

because i never got a workflow for adding ebooks like i did physical ones, and since i became too disabled to read physical books a few years ago, that means my LT cat is terribly behind...

72susanna.fraser

How close do you have to get to the amount available? I'm within $4.05 of the available $$ on Powell's, but I couldn't for the life of me find any appropriate new book(s) that seemed like a good fit for my Santee that could get me closer without going over.

But there is always some project i want to do to tidy my catalogue data. Plus the missing years of reading history... I suppose it's a benefit for me that i have Overdrive and Kindle Content records, so I'm not having to slowly go through each book on the device.

Another question about the Readings site... the vast majority (all? my notes are at home and I'm currently on lunch at work) of the books I'm finding that are in stock are the same price. I noticed that the rules say we shouldn't pick items costing less than $2.50. However, my Santee has requested ebooks, and some are very inexpensive. One of my picks is an omnibus of nearly 2,000 print pages. Another is my favourite book in the genre requested by the Santee. So these aren't worthless items, just inexpensive. (Another is a $1 item to use up some remaining budget but looked potentially fun.) Does it make sense to make exceptions to this rule?

Also, I should note that the omnibus is only just in public domain in the States, but not available on Gutenberg. (It does seem to be on Faded Page--I don't know if Americans can access it.) Does this make a difference (i.e. should I give Santee a link to Faded Page and use the money for something else)?

98keristars
Edited: Dec 4, 3:19 am

>97 EerierIdyllMeme: If it were me, I would appreciate the pointer to the public domain site with book title.

Faded Page doesn't have regional blocking, they just caution users to check the copyright status of works before downloading them.

As for other 99¢ or $1.99 books, I wouldn't pick them if they're part of Kindle Unlimited, as so many of those are. And a dollar or two leftover isn't a bad thing, helps if anyone goes over by a dollar or if there's unexpected price changes.

>97 EerierIdyllMeme: I think pointing the Santee to the public domain site with the book title is the right move.

I'd also suggest checking all of the prices you've listed in your picks as many of them are Kindle Unlimited prices. We won't be purchasing ebooks with Kindle Unlimited, so the normal Kindle ebook price should be chosen.

I'd checked the Kindle Unlimited thing, since they sneakily display that price much more prominently, I couldn't find any where I'd listed the Unlimited price, though (are there books that cost money on Kindle Unlimited? I thought it was usually free or not at all). I'm also hoping nothing has gone wrong with how prices are displayed in my location, although that probably wouldn't make the prices lower.

It seems the one book that was surprisingly inexpensive was on sale. (I'd been checking the price over the course of the week, and it had stayed at that price most of the time, but has now gone back up.) Now a different book is on sale, so I've done some rearranging which will hopefully still work out by the time the trigger is pulled.

I am having trouble since my Santee is using a store overseas. All the books I see are saying two, four, etc., weeks to ship. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Just saw this. Is there an easier way to find in stock books?

>100 EerierIdyllMeme: All of the prices look accurate, thanks so much! I did notice that two of the titles chosen were mid-series books. Be sure to check your Santee's catalog to confirm they've read the previous books!

We've opened up picking for folks who have no picks yet: https://www.librarything.com/santathing.php. Please jump in, claim someone, and pick out some books for them!

Woohoo. That was fun. :) I was surprised just how many times I found myself in a hole needing a magical $6 book to fill a gap, though.

>112 saroz: Yes, it was :) With a special mention for the British bookstore which only allowed me to view prices including delivery to the Netherlands (where I am), while picking for someone in the US...
BTW it's Sint Nicolaas today, the original Dutch Santa Claus, so a very appropriate moment to choose presents!

The last time I ordered from BWB (and it will be the last time!), the packaging was so flimsy that the book was destroyed. Spine broken, cover torn, just dreadful.

All picks are officially done and we've moved on to checking and ordering! You can see on the SantaThing homepage that the first orders have been made. Now comes the hard part: waiting for your books to arrive. Let us know if you've got any questions!

Very pleased with myself. This year when choosing books plus shipping I only had 11 cents left!

>116 secondhandrose: Congrats! I really, really tried but the Australian bookstore provided for book selection was giving me such headaches as I just couldn't find reasonably priced books. :(

I wish the bookstores would offer more discounts/more 'clearance books' during the holidays as I so wanted to get within a $1 since $6 bucks goes straight into delivery costs.

For anyone that wants to share, after you start opening Santa's treasures, please update this list so we can all see what you got.

https://www.librarything.com/list/46061/all/2024-Christmas-Gifts

(This isn't an official list, I have just created one the last couple years for the 75 Book Reading Challenge group, and thought I'd broaden the audience)

Hi katemcangus - our postal carrier, for no discernible reason, marked our address as moved with no forwarding address… we’ve since fixed that devastating-at-Christmas “error,” but it seems 2 books from “Ingram Book Warehouse” were affected. I assume this is my LibraryThing presents…. I think they’ve been sent back… is there something we can do about this?

A few updates:

1. All Kindle redemption emails have been sent out!

2. Tim has opened up the SantaThing homepage so folks can see who their Santa was, what was chosen, and any comments left. Keep in mind that if you haven't received your books yet and you want to be surprised, you may want to avoid the page.

Happy reading!

Oh fun! I was curious what the comments were for mine. XD I now have two new books added to my to-read list along with my gifts. ;) (And the third suggestion is a book I own and love. Well-spotted. ;))

Except for getting a book I already had in my library and a biography, SantaThing was good. Two of the four books I received I hadn't seen before and they're exactly the type of book I would have picked for myself.
