The Best of Dorothy Parker - 1995
This is a varied anthology of Parker’s work with intermingled short stories, poems, anecdotes and ephemera. Everything is very entertaining and easily read with the stories varying from four to sixteen pages and the other material from a few lines to a full page.
This is a book that is best read intermittently though, rather than from cover to cover. It is a great alternate read when your main book becomes slow or heavy and you need a break.
There is a six page introduction by Mervyn Horder and eight leaves of monochrome drawings by Helen Smithson. The 240 page book is bound in silver plasticised cloth with a design in black by Smithson, BUT buyer beware, the plasticised layer is very susceptible to heat/sun damage and buyers on the secondary market should ensure that the book they intend to purchase has not been damaged. Pictures of a heat/sun affected book can be seen below with buckling to the plasticised layer.
The book has pale grey endleaves and slipcase which measures. 22.2x14cm.
It was reprinted in 2019 in different binding (see below).

This is the 400th. Folio Archives I have written, which means I have posted a review every Friday (Brisbane time) for nearly eight years. At present I have another 650 Folio Society books in my library, and the collection keeps growing, so I won’t be stopping these reviews any time soon.

>1 wcarter: Thanks for these reviews. Long may they continue.
I really like Parker's writings, but don't have a copy of this one. I'll have to fix that soon.

Wowsers. Great stuff, Warwick! I also greatly enjoy your reviews. And it’s nice to see some of the lesser known titles, or ones that have drifted into the mists of time…and there’s lots of jewels amongst them…

Just noticed the #400 milestone mentioned by >6 ian_curtin:
Your reviews are a vital part of this forum and also the GMD and FPF forums. They have enabled more purchases than I care to count. Thank you very much!
