NatureKIT planning thread

Edited: Dec 14, 9:00 pm

The NatureKIT is open for volunteer hosts! In my original proposal, I suggested that it could be organized around themes of regions like forest, desert, prairie, tundra, gardens, etc., or around creatures like birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, microorganisms, etc., or other themes like endangered species, in the backyard or garden, in the house, in the city, on the farm, and so on, but these were just ideas to get us started. If you’d like to host a month, let me know your month and topic, and I’ll keep track of them here:

January: Sheep and Shepherding (Tess_W)
February: Forests, Farms & Grasslands (SilverWolf28)
March: Landscape (Jackie_K)
April: Flying Creatures (susanna.fraser)
May: Plants, Fungi, Etc. (JayneCM)
June: Oceans and Rivers (Charon07)
July: Inner Lives of Animals (GraceCollection)
August: Weather and Climate (LadyoftheLodge)
September: Urban Nature (Jackie_K)
October: Endangered Species (LibraryCin)
November: The Effects of Nature on Human Beings (clue)
December: Wild Card (LadyoftheLodge)

I am really excited about this one! Give me a day or two to figure out what topic I'd like and I'll host a month.

I will sign up for January with Sheep and Shepherding, please and thank you!

I will take Flying Creatures in April--birds, bats, insects, and pterosaurs all welcome!

I'd like July, for Inner Lives of Animals!

I really like books about how animals think, perceive the world around them, and interact socially with other members of their species or with other species of animals (or humans).

I will take December for a "Wild Card" or wrap up for the year. (Pun intended!)

Thanks for taking this on for us. I think it will be different.

I'd like February please. I'll figure out a topic in the next couple of days.

I think I'd like to host an Endangered Species month. Can you put me into October? Thanks!

There are a lot of animals (which I do love).

But I'm also hoping someone will be willing to do conservation or climate change or something like that, as well. Just throwing that out there if someone else is interested in something like that, too.

I would love to host another, but I've got quite a few hosting months already planned for other CATs and KITs, too!

I would like to host a month. Based on all types of plants, fungi, etc.

I'll host a month on landscape. Happy to take March.

Also happy to do a month on urban nature, but happy for someone else to do that if you have enough willing hosts.

>14 JayneCM: Wonderful! May, June, August, September, and November are still open. Which month would you like?

>15 Jackie_K: I will happily put you down for urban nature too, since we still have so many months available. Which month would you like?

I can also help out with another month if you need me. Topic would be weather and climate.

Forests? Farms? Grasslands? A combination of them? What do you guys think I should do?

29GraceCollection
Nov 14, 11:30 pm

I do like forest, but I think grassland could be fun as well!

>28 SilverWolf28: You could combine them so as to give the readers maximum flexibility.

32Jackie_K
Nov 16, 5:30 am

>28 SilverWolf28: I like the idea of combining them too. My Nature category is "Nature, landscape, environment, place", to incorporate as much as possible. You could do something similar: "Forests, farms, grasslands".

33SilverWolf28
Nov 17, 6:39 pm

I'll do Forests, Farms & Grasslands. (Thanks>32 Jackie_K:)

We have just one month unclaimed. If anyone would be willing to host November, just let me know!

35Charon07
Nov 17, 8:03 pm

I set up the 2025 NatureKIT wiki page here: https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/2025_NatureKIT

I’ll update November when we get our last host and topic.

36JayneCM
Nov 17, 10:27 pm

I could take November if we still need a host. I was thinking of people who work with nature - botanist, biologist, ecologist, ornithologist, herpetologist, etc. - or volunteers working to protect wildlife.

37Charon07
Nov 18, 7:32 am

>36 JayneCM: Over in the main planning thread, clue said she could take November (for this KIT, I think). If she meant a different KIT, I’ll take you up on your offer.

>1 Charon07: Hi, I just noticed that my March title has expanded (the title you've given it, Nature, Landscape, Environment, Place, is the title of my own personal Nature category). My intention was for March to be specifically on Landscape.
