Ideas and Opinions by Albert Einstein 2010

This is a collection of aphorisms, ideas, statements, letters and essays by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) that vary in length from a single sentence to a dozen pages, and cover topics as diverse as religion, science (expected), freedom, friendship, Germans and Jews (unexpected). This selection was first published in 1954 with the cooperation of Einstein and under the editorship of Carl Seelig.

The discussions are broadly grouped by topic and there is usually a one sentence introduction stating where and under what circumstances the text was created. Some are erudite and informative, while others are rather biased or quite scientifically complex.

I found it to be a good book to dip into when I had a few minutes spare, rather than to read it cover to cover, and I learnt quite a lot about Einstein, his life and ideas.

The xviii+379 page book has a six page introduction by David Bodanis, and is illustrated with a frontispiece picture of Einstein plus twelve pages of bound-in monochrome photos. It has silver grey endleaves and is bound in grey cloth printed with a wrap-around reflective silver and black pattern. The black slipcase (which is very tightly fitted on my copy) measures 25x16.9cm.

I love that cover design (and was previously unfamiliar with it), but the flipped text orientations on the spine would drive me crazy! Even with the rational understanding that it is a loose visual allusion to the idea of relative perspective.
