I’m really curious about that W.E.B. Du Bois. Appreciate your response to what’s happening in our country. I’m hiding from the world inside Piers Plowman.

>1 kidzdoc: The Snyder book looks interesting. I'll look forward to your impressions.

>3 kidzdoc: by ensuring that science continues to underpin all decision-making, policies and programs I think this is such an important concept that is under siege across so many aspects of American life. I wish I better understood why so many people, across all demographics, are so skeptical of science, and how we can effectively dialogue with these people. I have had conversations with intelligent people who feel that since scientific knowledge grows and sometimes changes, that that means all science is a lie or at least open to belief. "After all," they say, "at one time Galileo was the outlier when everyone else believed in geocentrism. So who's to say that this lone conspiracist isn't the one who is right and all the so-called experts wrong?" How do you respond to that?

The vaccine stuff does worry me, because it's parents making decisions for their children, who can't advocate for themselves. My GP in Greenville had vaccines as his area of expertise and had me get a new MMR vaccine probably ten years ago now. He said that as fewer parents vaccinate their children, it's important for adults to re-up their own childhood vaccines as a stop gap measure. I'll have to ask my current PCP about if there are any vaccines I should get.

I'm glad you're here as you may well be an important source of information about this going forward.

>1 kidzdoc: I read The People's Hospital a few months ago, and found it to be excellent, although it clearly show that the US health care system is inadequate for many.

I read Our Malady last year. Terrifying. But he is such a good and intelligent writer.

>5 kidzdoc: I understand you don’t want posts not related to books, or politics except for health politics, but the title of your thread is inviting such comment:
Kidzdoc Prepares for Trump 2.0
is certainly going to invite political comment as the weeks go by.

By posting this I know I will be ignored, but I know you will read it, and I’ve written it FYI, not expecting a response. I wish you well in your health thread but I am a bit unsure of the boundaries so shall not be commenting.

>6 labfs39: Our Malady is based on Snyder's harrowing personal near death experience, in which he was misdiagnosed by physicians in Germany and then the United States, suffered a perforated appendicitis, followed by sepsis and nearly died, despite being treated in one of the premier hospital systems in the country. It's a quick read that I borrowed from my county library system, so I'll probably start reading it tomorrow or Monday, especially since I requested two books that I plan to read this month or next.

I wish I better understood why so many people, across all demographics, are so skeptical of science, and how we can effectively dialogue with these people.

That's a great question. I have plenty of thoughts about it and I had started to reply, especially being a first responder during the COVID-19 pandemic, but I soon realized that I wouldn't have a quick or easy answer. I will get back to it, though.

>7 RidgewayGirl: I would be happy to serve as a source for childhood or adult vaccines, Kay.

>8 arubabookwoman: I should receive the copy of The People's Hospital I requested from my local library next week, so I'll be reading it soon.

>9 jessibud2: I haven't read anything by Timothy Snyder yet, but hopefully I can read my copy of On Tyranny sometime next year.

I thoughtlessly chose a title to this new thread which could be construed as inflammatory. That was not my intent, and I apologize to anyone I may have offended. I'll create a new one now, keeping the same spirit and topics, and close this one for good.

That's fine, Kay. I will report this person to the powers that be tomorrow, and my new post is up and running.

This thread is now closed.

I am so sorry that you are being hassled by trolls. I hope that you will read my message. I wanted to let you know that I am now officially in Kansas. I did the final cleaning on the house in Alabama and turned in the keys to the landlord on Friday. I am now done with that state, and have returned home to Kansas. For right now my phone number is the same as it was back in 2019 when we went to the Decatur Book Festival and had two delicious meals together.

I did get some reading done but I spent most of my time and energy cleaning and hauling stuff to various charities.

For me my new chapter now begins.
