I'm Micky, 38 years old, librarian, and generally bookish nerd. I usually have a good mix of reads going on every year with strong doses of romance, sff, historicals, and a dash of non-fiction. I'm largely kicking around without any goals this year beyond a list of 12 books off my own shelves that I want to (re)read. We'll see where my reading mood takes me!
I do my best to be chatty on my own thread and in addition to my reading, I'll also discuss highlights of my craft projects (check out my NeedleArts thread if you like more details), board games, what we're watching, and general life goings on often featuring my husband, Mr. Fine, and our two cats, Ash and Smee. Posters and lurkers alike are welcome.

Welcome to what is likely to be my last thread for the year! Will I get through those last two books on my own shelf personal challenge list? How many holiday romances can I cram into December? Can I post consistently once a week for the rest of the year? Hang around and find out!

And I've completely failed at weekly check ins. *face palm* Here's some recent life highlights.
I am happy to say that my work routine hasn't had to change quite as much as anticipated. While I still can't start earlier than 8 a.m., I got it in writing from one of our directors that staff in our department are permitted to take shorter lunches to complete our EDO time. It's less fun but I'm still done work at 4 so I'll take it.
Work has been a little stressful with a bunch of projects all landing on my plate at once, all of which had "get these done as soon as possible so it's done before the holidays" deadlines. I've got a few of them wrapped up and one has a more flexible deadline after all, so I'm hoping that this coming week I can actually spend some substantial time ordering material for the library (you know, my primary job). I don't work a full week for the rest of the year so we'll see what gets done.
Other life happenings included our annual physicals. All is well, although I am going to see a physiotherapist next week. The combo of all my typing and mousing at work with crochet in my down time has given me the occasional twinge in my forearms and I want to talk to a pro to help prevent/postpone an RSI if possible.
I've had a couple friend dates in the past few weeks (with three different friends *gasp*) and one of Mr. Fine's friends invited us to a Friendsgiving party last weekend (although no one was American and it was really more of an early holiday party). Did I bring a crochet project and crochet for a bit? Absolutely. But we had a few of our shared friends there so I wasn't an awkward bunny the whole time, lol. Plus the food I could eat was very tasty.
As for this weekend, we have our monthly game night with our friends M&A this evening. We're shaking it up and doing a long-planned craft of making hobbit door wreaths instead of board gaming. Should be fun. Tomorrow will be the usual house cleaning and I'm contemplating baking the orange cranberry bundt cake I'm planning to serve for dessert for Christmas dinner (I'll freeze it after it's cool). I have my EDO on Monday and have both the aforementioned physio appointment and my monthly massage plus I need to stop by my former dentist's office to pick up my retainers, with plans to bake butter tarts in between all that. If you are not Canadian and are wondering what on earth a butter tart is, this recipe is pretty similar to the one I use. At some point this weekend I'd also like to grab one last Christmas gift for my mom and get my passport photos taken.
On the crafting front, my cross-stitch project has largely been ignored the last few weeks as my focus has been on my Nativity amigurumi. Baby Jesus and Mary are complete and I'm probably close to three quarters done Joseph. Then I'll just have a sheep left and I'll be done with amigurumi for this year. I have two other pattern sets that have shepherds, wise men, an angel, and a bunch of different animals but I plan to tackle those over the next few years. I don't hate making amigurumi but they are very finicky and I don't think I'll be making any after the full Nativity set is done. Except if I get a request from the niblings (or if H ever has kiddos). When I want something to keep my hands busy but can't give it the attention the amigurumi require, I've got a crochet cowl on the go still (it came along to the Friendsgiving party).
Our annual holiday viewing is in gear. Mr. Fine has chosen the Harry Potter films and the How to Train Your Dragon series as his viewing of choice for his TV nights. I, of course, have many holiday rom coms on the plan *cackle*. We've already had one truly bad one (A Very British Christmas on Hoopla) and a couple decent ones (Lindsey Lohan Netflix Christmas movies) in the mix. My friend A has made us bingo sheets for all the holiday rom com tropes, which is fun to play. We picked up Christmas peanut M&M's when grocery shopping on Thursday to use as bingo markers for the rest of the month. Before that we used random small Lego pieces, which was much less fun.
Reading has been ticking along and I should be on track to reach my unofficial goal of 100 books before the end of the year (although it might be a closer thing this year than in the past). Reviews coming shortly.

Book 94

The American Roommate Experiment - Elena Armas
When the ceiling of Rosie Graham's apartment collapses literally in front of her, she figures she'll just crash in her best friend's apartment while said friend is on her honeymoon. There's only one problem: her friend has promised the apartment to her cousin from Spain, Lucas Martin, who is on vacation in New York. After an awkward first meeting, Rosie and Lucas end up being friends and agreeing to share the loft apartment until Rosie's home is habitable again. But as the two of them share the space and get to know each other better, it becomes clear that there's the definite potential for them to be more than friends and roommates.
This romance started off strong with an excellent meet cute and some decent banter but it ultimately ended with a fizzle. Armas crafts a slow burn romance and the plot element I didn't get into in my summary, of Rosie having writer's block and going on pretend dates with Lucas as inspiration, makes for some fun interludes. But the whole "my feelings are real but his/hers are just for the fake dating" of it all goes on too long. Also, there is some strange English phrasing (from characters who are supposed to be native English speakers) that a good editor should have caught. Plus the ending was a little too saccharine for me. Not a terrible read, but not one I'd heartily recommend either.

Lost in a Good Book - Jasper Fforde
I can never read the Thursday Next books too close together as all of the puns and cleverness gets to be too much, but when read properly spaced out, they are a perfect read. This re-read was precisely what I needed in the midst of a very busy week.

Book 97

Toil and Trouble - Mairghread Scott and Kelly & Nicole Matthews
A reimagining of Macbeth focused on the witches and the backstory that has brought them to intervene in Macbeth's story.
This book ended up on The List as the result of a recommendation from one of the podcasts I listen to. I'd hoped to read it around Halloween but holds timelines didn't work out for it. It would definitely be a perfect seasonal read. Scott crafts a really thought-provoking tale that engages with Macbeth in an original way, creating strong personalities for each of the witches and digging into what has brought them to make such powerful prophecies to Macbeth. It's also an exploration of what happens when found family goes sour and how one recovers from it. If you like the Scottish play, give this one a read.

I started off December with an abandoned book. All I Want for Christmas by Maggie Knox was Pearl ruled for a lot of telling not showing and an overabundance of cliche usage in characters' internal monologues. I think the cliches were intended to establish that the characters were from Tennessee but by the time I reached "she looked as scared as a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs," I'd had enough. Not even the cute dog name of Patsy Canine can save that. Too bad as the co-authors (Knox is a shared pseudonym) are Canadian and I was hoping to find a new romance author to support. I won't be seeking out their other books based on this experience.

An Alaskan Christmas - Jennifer Snow
And in novels that I should have abandoned but stuck it out to the end, we have this holiday romance. I borrowed it from the library as an ebook when I forgot to bring a book for the bus and it starts off fine enough. Workaholic surgeon, Erika, is forced to go on vacation by the Anchorage hospital board and decides to go to her small Alaskan hometown, where she reconnects with her childhood best friend, who she hasn't seen in ten years. Also there is said best friend's older brother, Reed, who is now a hot search and rescue volunteer (and bartender). There's lot of initial awkwardness, eventually Erika and Reed get together (and wowzers can you tell this is a Harlequin imprint as there's a fair amount of "getting together"), there's the inevitable big break up, and final reconciliation. And because he's in search and rescue and she's a surgeon, there's dashes of medical peril thrown in. The point at which I should have put the book down wasmidway into the novel when Erika mentions in internal monologue that she saw Reed's father, who went missing when Reed was a teen, several years prior to the novel's start. It felt like a real BS move to include this plot point over halfway through when there had been regular mention by other characters of how much their father's disappearance had affected them. And I couldn't buy that even someone who was as socially awkward as Erika had been established to be, wouldn't contact the authorities about seeing a missing man, even if she was out of touch with her childhood best friend. AND THEN this plot point didn't even pay off. I assumed that it would be the source of the big misunderstanding but at no point did Reed find out she ever knew. Instead it seems to have been included just so Erika could recognize the father in the final section of the book when Reed is in the hospital. *eye roll* But somehow I persevered only to be rewarded with an eye roll inducing, overly happy ending that placed bows on every single thing (including fixing in a paragraph Erika's contentious relationship with her father). If you're looking for a holiday read, skip this one. Please.

I am a huge fan of butter tarts and will check out the recipe.

Updates from the past week:
I did ALL THE THINGS on my Monday off this week, with lots of running around. All the things I listed as tasks I wanted to complete last week were finished.
My physiotherapist visit was good but included the news that I have early signs of tennis elbow (from a combo of computer tasks at work and crochet). I'll be seeing the physiotherapist for more treatment sessions in the next few weeks, I've got bands to put on my forearms when doing tasks that aggravate my forearms, and stretches to do. Plus I'm reducing (a bit) the amount of crochet I do. According to the physiotherapist, I should be having more symptoms than I am, based on her assessment. So yay for that at least?
Work was less hectic this week and I did finally get to do a bunch of ordering. Feeling a little less behind on that front now.
Today we opted for watching church online as there was the big Christmas musical program put on by the kids and I decided to skip out on the crowds of (rightfully) proud family members. This evening we're going out for dinner with friends and then having a game night afterwards.
I am happily largely ready for Christmas at this point. All my baking is done as is my shopping. I just need to tackle the last of the wrapping and I'll be fully set.
On the crafting front, I completed Joseph for my Nativity set today. He turned out pretty well, although I did not love sewing together all his many pieces. With the aforementioned reduction of crocheting, I'm not sure if I'll dive into making the sheep this week or do some cross-stitch this week to give my forearms a different motion for a while.
This week's holiday viewing included the so stupid and I loved it for its stupidity: Hot Frosty. Utterly ridiculous. Watch if you like that kind of thing.
Finished two books this week, both of which I'd rate highly. Reviews to come at some point.

Hi Micky, I enjoyed reading your update as always. It's great you're getting treatment for your forearms and I hope it helps you manage both work and crafting. I don't blame you for skipping the musical program (or, rather, watching it from afar). I bet it was bedlam. I hope the week ahead treats you well!

>35 MickyFine: I watched Hot Frosty with my friends a few weeks ago and also enjoyed it for the stupidity 😂 I've enjoyed some of the ethical discourse about it online -- Isn't she technically his mother since she gave him life? He's only, what, a couple weeks old? How is any of their relationship okay??? Lol 😂

>36 lauralkeet: Thanks, Laura. Physio has been good so far and the braces I wear on my forearms have definitely made a difference.
>37 curioussquared: Oh yeah. He is the absolute definition of a literal sexy baby, lol.

The Most Wonderful Crime of the Year - Ally Carter
Maggie Chase is a cozy mystery writer. Ethan Wyatt is a massively popular thriller writer. She hates his guts. He can never get her name right. And they're spending Christmas together as they've been invited by an avid fan to her large estate in England. When they arrive, they discover that their hostess is Eleanor Ashley, the undisputed queen of mystery novels. However, on their first night there, Eleanor disappears. From a locked room. With the weather awful, Maggie and Ethan decide to investigate what happened and determine just who in the party may have wanted to harm Eleanor. But as Christmas approaches the number of suspects keeps stacking up and Maggie and Ethan are discovering there's more than meets the eye.
I ADORED this holiday mystery romance. Carter crafts a really solid mystery that obviously owes a debt to Agatha Christie while also building a romance between Maggie and Ethan that had such lovely surprises. Plus there's a heavy dose of humour that made me laugh out loud. However, it's not all light and fluffy. Maggie is recovering after getting out of a toxic relationship and Carter deals with the repercussions so deftly. If you're looking for a fun read for the Christmas season, I recommend this one highly.

Arabella - Georgette Heyer
As the eldest of eight siblings, Arabella knows that the fortunes of her brothers and sisters are riding on her ability to make a good match during her London season. While traveling from her home in Yorkshire, her carriage breaks down and she takes shelter in the hunting lodge of Mr. Beaumarais, the Nonpareil of the ton. When she overhears Beaumarais talking about how she's obviously just another young fortune hunter throwing herself at him Arabella pretends that she's an heiress to try and get her own back. Beaumarais is instead amused and decides to make Arabella the toast of the season. What he doesn't expect is to fall for Arabella's unpretentious charms. As a notorious flirt Beaumarais finds himself going to all lengths to prove the veracity of his intentions to Arabella and ends up protecting an urchin, a stray dog, and, eventually, Arabella's reckless younger brother all in his quest to win her heart.
Georgette Heyer delivers a pitch perfect novel here. I adored Arabella and Beaumarais and their charming romance had me delighted from start to finish. I could have done with a little less of Arabella's younger brother's hijinks, mostly because I found him digging himself further and further into gambling debt quite stressful. But other than that quibble, I'd highly recommend this novel as a great starting point if you've never tried Heyer before.

So This Is Christmas - Jenny Holiday
Matteo Benz has always dedicated himself to service: of his country and his king. When American management consultant, Cara Delaney, is hired by the king to modernize the watch company that is the center of the economy of the small European nation, Matteo has the worst expectations. Initially they butt heads but while spending so much time together they find that while they have different visions for the company, outside of work, they have a lot in common. But Cara is only in the country until Christmas and both of them are wedded to their jobs. Does the spark between them have a shot of surviving beyond Christmas Day?
It took me a bit to warm up to this novel as both of the main characters are quite buttoned up at the start of the novel and getting a sense of them as people, takes some time. However, once I got past that initial hump, there is a charming holiday romance to be found here. While this is my least favourite of the series, it still delivers great holiday feels.

This week has been largely laidback as I begin playing the game of "that's a 2025 thing" with a bunch of my responsibilities, lol. We did get a big dump of snow this week so our white Christmas is locked in, even though the forecast is currently for temperatures above freezing on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
I had my last meeting of 2024 at work on Wednesday and have just been powering through a bunch of ordering the last couple days as I try to get back on top of my regular ordering tasks that were neglected in the fall due to vacations and being embedded out in branches. The biggest excitement this week was that my new ergonomic mouse arrived and I'm a big fan of it (although as per the advice of my physiotherapist, I alternate between using it and my traditional mouse).
I had my second treatment session with my physiotherapist on Monday, which was less intense than the first visit. She also clarified the best way to wear my forearm bands to help alleviate discomfort and that's been a big help. Plus, she said that I don't have to give up crochet and that it's actually better if I do it at my normal level (although no marathon sessions). Yay!
On the crafting front, I have mostly been working on the sheep for my nativity set and finished its head and body this week. I'm now onto crocheting the "wool" on its head. So I might have it finished by Christmas. I also did a bit of cross-stitch this morning and found it enjoyable after being away from the project since early November, although it also activates my tennis elbow symptoms, le sigh.
This week was the last of the fluffy holiday romance viewing and beginning this weekend I'll start watching my annual must-see Christmas movies. We finished our Harry Potter rewatch on Thursday night and now Mr. Fine's picks are the How to Train Your Dragon movies.
Just the single book completed this week (already reviewed above) although I plan to get some quality time in with my current read this weekend.
Not sure if I'll pop in here much over the next week so I'll wish everyone a safe, cozy, and very merry Christmas!
