After engaging in some dueling editing of Awards and Honors with another LT member, I messaged them to find out why they were removing earlier award stages from numerous awards (e.g., Booker Prize, National Book Award, many others). I said that it was my understanding that ALL prior stages of an award are to be recorded and remain on the record so that, for instance, you can filter to the 2024 longlist and see ALL the books on the original longlist. This member replied that they were removing earlier stages because there is a problem in that “the WRONG highest stage is reflected in the individual book's list of awards” and that “the only certain solution is to remove the lower stages.” I recommended that they report this as a bug, which they haven’t yet done.
I’m not reporting it as a bug because I haven’t seen it, and I suspect that the problem is simply a delay in indexing. My questions for anyone who is interested are, Have you seen this problem? If so, will you please report it so that it can be addressed? And what do you think is the the appropriate way to handle this situation? If I add back the earlier stages, this member simply removes them again. Do you agree that the best solution is to remove earlier award stages, leaving only the highest stage attained?

I absolutely do not agree with removing earlier stages, that defeats the whole purpose of the awards and honors pages having stages.
I think you should contact LT staff about this - maybe they could make this person understand.

>1 Charon07: leave the higher stage only. Many of the awards, and there are thousands, have only the higher stage. Must I then assume we go back and add all the lower stages back into the award?

>4 bergs47: Yes. That was part of the point of the Awards block when it was created.

Holy cow, mass deleting information is not good.
>2 gilroy: Looking at the Booker Prize, I see Power Edits to add/remove Longlist and Shortlist. The other member is comparatively new. Time to bring in staff, I think, for undoing damage and resolving the issues.

I see Power Edits to add/remove Longlist and Shortlist.
I thought you could use Power Edit only in your own catalog. It should not be possible to use that for CK!

I assume it would be for situations in which someone introduces a large amount of garbage data. Maybe power edit should be something that needs voting approval to go through?
9Charon07
I’ve contacted staff.
FWIW, I believe Power Edit was added to make it easy to add the earlier stages, since the old system allowed only one stage.

>7 lilithcat: >9 Charon07: Yes, Power Edit is handy within the new awards system (not CK!). I tend to use it to update older information, like adding stages ("longlist" to shortlist items), or making category names consistent (capitalization, dashes, stuff like that).

>1 Charon07: I did find an example title where this has happened and I will report it as a bug.
Which is the best solution when a system isn't operating as expected. Not the deletion of inconvenient data (unless it's clear that an issue can't/won't be fixed... which can only be established through the bug report).
*That last part is a general thought and not specific to this or any other incident on LT.

>11 hipdeep: Can you give me the example? The individual in question today messaged me an example, but it was one I’d edited on Nov. 10, making me think that it’s just slow indexing. Was the example you found edited within, say, the last two weeks?

Bug reported: https://www.librarything.com/topic/365965 and has been fixed now.

Reporting the bug got it fixed very quickly. Certainly a much better solution than deleting valid information,

Can somebody explain to me how this new system for awards and honors works?
I am moderating the Nonfiction Challenge in the 75'ers group and every January we have as the topic "Prize Winners" with an emphasis on lesser known prizes. I would put out a list of awards as a place for readers to start looking for books they might like to read that won those prizes. In the past I could search my catalog for nonfiction then go into Common Knowledge and see if that book was awarded any award. I can't do that now - or I don't know where to look to find that information for a title. Can somebody tell me how to find out if a book was awarded or nominated for an award by looking at the Word Details, the Book Details, Common Knowledge, or Descriptions pages?
Or perhaps show me where there is a listing of awards and finalists for titles within LT?

>17 benitastrnad: I responded in the other thread about how to find the awards for a particular book: https://www.librarything.com/topic/354411#8707736
There isn’t a particularly good index for the Awards and Honors system right now, but you can easily search for a specific award if you want to see the winners and/or nominees. Just click the magnifying glass icon in the search box at the upper right of the page, click Awards in the navigation bar at the left, then type the award name in the search box.

>17 benitastrnad: You can also add awards to one of your catalogue views, enabling you to scan for them throughout catalogue, rather than individually book by book. They've also split awards into 3 categories presented as 3 separate columns, so you can include just genuine awards, the other 2 being reading lists and distinctions.
New awards module is awesome and a huge improvement over the old one. It just resides in a different place now. Just as the series when that was upgraded

thanks for that hint, but that means that I would have to set up a whole different style and it still would show up under the work title. (I would also have to have a monitor screen the size of Milwaukee to accommodate all the extra columns.) It would have been nice if the awards and been left in Common Knowledge and the new stuff added as is. That would have been the best of both worlds. Oh well.

I don't want to search an award. I want to search the titles in my library and then see if that book won, or was nominated for an award. There just doesn't seem to be a quick way to do that when it was fairly simple to do before the change. I hope that somebody is working on this.

>21 benitastrnad: The change has moved it out of Common Knowledge, but only to directly above the CK section, so your old workflow can still be done – just look for the Awards and Honors heading instead of the Common Knowledge heading.
Although note that it is possible to collapse the Awards and Honors section, by clicking the small brown triangle shape in the section heading – is it possible you've done this without knowing? It's also possible to customise the layout of the page so the section could be elsewhere (look for "reorder modules" at the foot of the page if you think you might have done this).
Test it out on one of your recent books, say The Captain's Daughter whose page shows it has "Lois Roth Award for a Translation of a Literary Work" amongst other awards/honors. Once you know what you're looking for it should be as easy as it always was to look for the information as you've described doing.

I found it! It is on the main page. You have to scroll down (past all the posted reviews) but the awards and honors is there. Thanks. I am going to try to reorder the modules and see if I can't move the awards and honors closer to the top. That should do the trick.
