Kill murder scene with guitar strings

The book is probably from early '90s to early 2000s.
Fairly sure it was a ya book.
I don't remember much except for there was a murder scene that stuck with me:

About getting a throat cut with guitar strings.

I feel like there was some part about prom or homecoming or a dance or something, but I'm not sure.
That scene has stuck with me for 20 years. I know it's not much but maybe someone knows it.

The short story The Bird with the Broken Wing by Agatha Christie has a murder committed with a ukulele string. It was one of the stories featuring Harley Quinn.

Not a guitar string or YA though.
