The Book of Common Prayer Ornamented by Woodcuts from Designs of Albert Durer, Hans Holbein and Others in Imitation of Queen Elizabeth’s Book of Christian Prayer - 2004

This superb Folio Society fine edition copies the style of the prayer book published by William Pickering and Charles Whittingham the Younger in 1853. The typeface reflects that of the internationally renown typesetter William Caslon (1693-1766).

It contains all the details for the administration of the sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church of England. It also includes the Psalms of David, pointed as they are to be sung or said in churches.

There is a full page decorated title page, a full page engraving of Elizabeth First and every page has engraved neo-classical borders and devotional woodcuts that, except for those of the foreword, preface and tables, are not repeated.

There is a five page foreword by Sir Patrick Cormack. The x + 718 page book is sumptuously quarter bound in dark green goatskin leather blocked with gold foil on spine and covers, and has marbled paper covers by Ann Muir. The binding was designed by Chris Waddon. The page tops are gilt, while other page edges are stained green. There is a green ribbon page marker and the book has dark green endpapers. The dark green slipcase has a gilt decorative band on front and back and measures 24.8x18.4cm.

Even if you are not Christian or Protestant, this is a beautiful book to behold.

The Folio Society also published a limited edition facsimile of King Henry’s Prayer Book which is reviewed here.

As a little mental game, ask oneself whether would FS publish this today, and if they did, what would be the price?

>2 cwl: Probably between £100-200. Maybe they would add an introduction and signature by ever-present Neil Gaiman and and do a flash sale for £350 which would sell out in 30 seconds and end up on ebay another 30 seconds later.

>2 cwl: Well, I'm envisioning a paper bound limited edition with sprayed edges and a clam shell case, each containing a genuine Finger of Christ with an introduction and signature from Rowan Atkinson. Limitation of 750. £750UK / £860 ROW / $950 US.

>1 wcarter: Beautiful! I believe that the artist responsible for the wood engravings was Mary Byfield.
