A friend read this book in 2014-2015, and I think it was still pretty new then; she might have bought it at the Scholastic book fair that year. Probably classified as Middle Grade, maybe Young Adult. We were reading it around age 13 in an American middle school; the book was in English.
It followed a young female protagonist whose older sister (maybe just friend?) had run away. The primary conflict dealt with the protagonist deciding to go after her and trying to figure out where she'd gone. I think it was 1st person POV, but possibly 3rd. There was an older teenage boy character who accompanied the protagonist on her search; I think he had maybe been romantically interested in the older sister, but now the protagonist kind of had a crush on him. He was named something like Cole, maybe?
The cover was photorealistic but didn't include any people. I think it was a stylized picture of the sky, bright blue, and then had more earthy, golden tones around the bottom edges--maybe leaves, or straw? Bird feathers? The title lettering took up most of the cover space.
I left this for last because I'm not certain, but I think it was historical fiction of some kind. Possibly set in a frontier, colonial kind of American town? But mainly the thing I remember is the dynamic of the protagonist searching for her female friend and the older boy accompanying her, so if any of this rings a bell please comment to let me know!!
