This is a book I read in the late 1980s or early 1990s in Washington, USA.
I can't recall if it was fiction or nonfiction but it read like a teen girl's diary from Victorian times. The girl had a horse that she took to events, possibly fox hunts or jumping of some type of horse show. She would go on her own and ride the train to get there with her horse. The book was also her sketch book of plants and flowers in a botanical illustration style.
In the end there was some sort of riding accident and the girl was very ill for several weeks. When she got well she asked her sister about her horse and her sister ran out of the room, so I assumed that the horse died in the accident. The book was printed in landscape format and was not very long.
