Help me find this book please!!!

The main character is Jewish (discusses Kosher) and is sent to a camp/base in the mountains for training. I remember he discussed flapjacks specifically. The first portion of the book is about training at the camp and at some point they go off to war. I believe they are sent to Italy but I remember specifically he finds a woman he falls in love with and there is a scene with a barn. In the end they assault a mountain and they meet up at the top. I can’t remember this books name or author, hopefully someone knows this book!
