Contemporary live story set in paris

Help! I read a book in summer and can’t remember the name. It’s set in a Paris apartment building, a young man leaves England and comes to stay. He starts a relationship with a local French girl who’s an activist and it doesn’t work out. The novel talks about all the neighbours living in the apartment block and there’s a homeless man living nearby who used to be married/in a relationship with one of the inhabitants. There is a bookshop on the ground floor and the young man works there. Hope you can help!
