I'll join in. We're also celebrating Hanukkah which starts Christmas Day evening.
>2 Carmenere: Jolabokaflod sounds great.

Currently Wednesday morning here in Auckland, New Zealand. I made waffle batter last night, so we'll be having waffles for breakfast.
I didn't read much at all last night as I'd finished two books in the afternoon - Mother Ireland and The Kamogawa Food Detectives and my son has a new hobby of making cocktails, so was fairly wiped out by his cosmopolitan.
My current reading that I'd like to finish by end of year:
The End of Everything by Dovid Bergelson
Drive your plow over the bones of the dead by Olga Tokarczuk - Anita tribute read
The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara - War Room
Brodeck's Report by Philippe Claudel
Uncle Petros and Goldbach's Conjecture by Apostolos Doxiadis

Christmas Readathon

Books read from: Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve, Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford. Bound to Please by Michael Dirda and am listening to Lake House by Kate Morton.

Books finished:

Book Thoughts: I have had Shop Class as Soulcraft laying around for some time and the other day I picked it up and started reading. I am now a few pages from the end and will probably finish it this week. I am more than half way done with Bound to Please and for a book critic who has complained in some of the essays he wrote about the lack of copy editing, I have found a surprising number of copy mistakes (words misspelled) and some really weirdly formulated sentences. I am guessing that the publisher never bothered to do any editing, trusting the Washington Post had already done it. They were wrong.

Non-Book Activities: I am getting ready to get dressed for the Christmas program at church and for the Caroling we will do afterwards. It is one of those typical grey misty winter days here on the prairie of Kansas. Visibility is about a half mile. It feels really cozy and would have been a perfect day for hot coffee and reading. Unfortunately, I had a job interview this morning, had to get the oil changed in my car, and cook some dip for the after caroling party.

Books read from: Infidel by Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Guide to Excruciating Correct Behavior by Judith Martin, The Book of Love Letters by Audrey and Paul Grescoe, Touch Not the Cat by Mary Stewart

Books finished:La Cuisine des sorcières by Pauline Capmas-Delarue
Les fiançailles de M. Hire by George Simenon

Time reading: 2
Time posting: 2:00 pm Wednesday
Snacks: Lots of chocolates

Thoughts: Les fiançailles de M. Hire is pure George Simenon: ambiguous relationships, disappointments and a really creepy atmosphere born from the most ordinary places. I'm always impressed how he manages to convey nostalgia, griminess and suspicion.

Non-book activities: Santa distraction was a success! My little Niece was bewildered to hear knocking at the door with bells and turn around to find presents under the tree and milk and cookies gone. I've very proud of my little plan :D

I'm in! I just didn't see this until 3pm on the 25th. Reading is my self-indulgent plan this week ...

So here's where I am: sorry, haven't been tracking the hours at all ... I'm gonna skip that this time, and just mind the books.

Books read from: Red Star Rogue, 2010: Odyssey Two, Absolution
Books finished: Red Star Rogue

Snacks: Cookies - an obscene amount!

Thoughts: My Xmas is more than 12 days long by the time we finish all the get togethers, travel, and celebrations. It's a lotta anything ... but somehow, I don't think I'll be tired of it before it ends.
Thoughts while posting this: Wait a second, I thought bluebirds were supposed to migrate. Google agrees with me. I have a lazy bird in my yard at the moment...

Non-book activities: Exercise. But the cookie weight is starting to show ...

Christmas Readathon - Christmas Day update

Books read from: Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve, Shop Class as Soulcraft by Matthew B. Crawford. Bound to Please by Michael Dirda and am listening to Lake House by Kate Morton.

Books finished: Shop Class As Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford

Book Thoughts: I finished reading Shop Class as Soulcraft this morning. This book was for my real life book discussion group a few months ago. I listened to it and so was able to lead the discussion, but I wanted to read the hardcopy of the book. I did so and just finished it this morning. The book was well liked by the members of the discussion group, much to my surprise. I really did not think that a book about educational philosophy would be that interesting to them, but I was proved wrong. We had a lively discussion about it because so much of what he discusses is current issues in education. There is a sizeable portion of the group that is involved in education in one form or another, so we had a lively discussion.

Non-Book Activities: The Christmas program last night was cute. (it always is.) The caroling afterwards was done, and I got my artichoke dip made in time for everybody to enjoy. We had a good time talking and eating. It was a good Christmas Eve. Not my best ever - but good.

Christmas Friday Roundup

Books read from: Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve, Bound to Please by Michael Dirda and am listening to Lake House by Kate Morton.

Books finished: Shop Class As Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford

Book Thoughts: I am about 150 pages from the end of Bound to Please. I am surprised at the number of mistakes in this book. Where is the copy editor? It has been the perfect three days for sitting and reading. Grey, misty, gloomy, and foggy. It is real mood setting. Even with all the activities I am surprised at how much I am getting read.

Christmas Saturday report

Books read from: Fortune's Rocks by Anita Shreve, Bound to Please by Michael Dirda, Protected By Shadows by Helene Tursten and am listening to Lake House by Kate Morton.

Books finished: Shop Class As Soulcraft: An Inquiry Into the Value of Work by Matthew B. Crawford

Book Thoughts: I spent about an hour reading this morning and for the first time in four days I woke up to a bright sunshiny morning. The weather is perfect for this time of year. I continue to add to my TBR list from Bound to Please. I am unhappy with LT over the changes they have made to the Common Knowledge portion of a title entry. The awards and prizes have been removed. They are no longer available from the title work page. So wrong.

Non-Book Activities: I unpacked two boxes of books today and am not sure I should have done so. The bookcases are not stable and I didn't notice that until I had started putting books on the shelves. I also unpacked one of the wardrobe boxes. It did not have my comforter in it, so I will have to keep looking for that one. I am about half done with my Christmas letters. Now I will have to send them out on Monday - if I finish them tomorrow.

Day Dec 27, Friday, I was busy getting ready for my migration south. I managed to read a little in both my books but did not finish any.

Dec 28. Today, I did some reading in Old School. I’m in Southern Illinois tonight and feeling pretty tired. I slept off and on and left home about 5:30 am. I will go to bed soon and try to read but I suspect I will fall asleep.
