I read these books over ten years ago, maybe even 15+ years ago, but I only remember snippets.
The main character (young teenage boy I think) enters the magic land when his heartbeat stops for a moment when he is over a watershed. His body water being perfectly split over the watershed is water transports him.
There is a female character whose hair is perpetually tangled and messy. I think she is an elf.
Later in the series they have a magic flying carpet that can talk, but when they spend too much time in our world, it starts turning into a normal rug.
One if the later books also extreme reactions when magic words are spoken while holding technology. I wish I could remember more, but I either borrowed it from my grade school library or the bookmobile that used to come to town.
