The Little Grey Men, A Story for the Young in Heart by “BB” (Denys Watkins-Pitchford) 2008

First published in the gloomy war year of 1942, this is the story of the last four gnomes left living in Britain who live in Warwickshire beside a brook. It is an adventure story because one of the gnomes (Cloudberry) decides to explore beyond their normal range, but when he fails to return, the others (Baldmoney, Dodder and Sneezewort) have to try to find him by building a boat. Their journey through the English countryside in search of their colleague lasts for almost a year, passing through the seasons, and ending only as Winter approaches. Along the way they have to cope with the encroachment of civilization on their natural idyll.

Denys James Watkins-Pitchford (1905-1990), who used the pseudonym of BB, was awarded the 1942 Carnegie Medal for this fairy tale novel. He was also a talented nature artist and the illustrator of the novel. All his drawings and paintings are reproduced in this book.

The xxii + 202 page book has a preface by Michael Morpurgo and is profusely illustrated with eight full page colour paintings, 18 full page monochrome ink drawings, and eighteen headpiece and 15 tailpiece drawings. The book is bound in grey cloth with the covers being blocked in red with a design by the author. It has red endleaves and a red slipcase that measures 23.7x16.8cm.
