I can’t remember the name! Please help!

I am looking for the book serie where a two powerful entities, a wizard and a fairy, engage in a game that involves using real individuals to achieve their goals. In this story, the characters are chosen by the immortals for their respective sides, with the fairy selecting a princess and the wizard choosing a farm boy.
