Hi, and welcome to my thread for 2025.
My name is Gail. I’m a retired elementary school teacher living on Florida’s west coast with my big gray girl, Ruby, Empress of All Cats.
Reading has been my life for as long as I can remember. Almost all genres appeal to me at least once in a while, the exceptions being romance and hard science fiction (although very occasionally they attract me as well).
Major reading interests include Victorian fiction; nonfiction about the Victorian era; zoology and botany and natural history in general; the Middle Ages; books about books; books about art and artists, and always, always mysteries. I’m a bit picky about those last, however: I don’t like gore or too much silliness. Heroines that constantly make extremely stupid and dangerous mistakes annoy me. Mysteries written from about 1920 to 1970 are almost always interesting to me. I will overlook many a fault in any book if that book is genuinely funny.
A cross section of favorite authors just at random would include A.S. Byatt, Mary Doria Russell, Anthony Trollope, George Bellairs, Agatha Christie, Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Tan Twan Eng, Chaim Potok, Franz Kafka, Saki. I love finding new-to-me authors.
Other hobbies include watercolor, Art journaling, word puzzles, and making people laugh. Volunteering has taken up (far too) much of my time. Currently I’m the president of our condo association, which has 146 units. It gets busy.
A few favorite books (again chosen at random):
Barchester Towers
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd
Posession
Winters in the World
Rebecca
Wolf Hall
The Hound of the Baskervilles
Dandelion Wine
The Dark Is Rising
Villette
An Unnecessary Woman
The Age of Innoncence
Lonelyheart 4122
Shalimar the Clown
Please join me as I try to read from my shelves in 2025.

Welcome back, Gail! Unfortunately, LT’s wiki system is down, but I’ve got you on my list to add to the Threadbook as soon as it’s back up.

It will not come as a surprise to your Gail that you will have my company again in 2025. I am so pleased to see you set up and ready to go already.
