I will accept the compliment and consider it only fair, for two reasons. The first being that you are right - my father always loved to quote Archie Bunker, saying "California is the land of fruits and nuts". I, myself, will reserve judgment until I have seen it with my own eyes. But it is also fair because I, unfortunately, have a very low opinion of your home state of Missouri - and I am being kind! :-)

It looks like you have to be logged in to a Google account to get the edit button to show up. Sorry, mine is always logged in, so I didn't realize that until I just tried viewing the map while logged out.
But, if you have an account and log in, the edit button will be in the upper right corner, just above all you currently see. If you click that, then your name, it will take you to your peg, which you can then drag and drop where you'd like it on the map.

The Book Depository is brilliant; sometimes the prices are slightly higher than Amazon but when you add the Amazon postage BD comes out tops. For my last order of two paperbacks I compared the price with Waterstones (where I had a special offer and points to use up) and it was still about a third cheaper. And they deliver very quickly.

If you have Amazon Prime, then obviously shipping is a non-factor, I'd say. However, not only are BD's prices sometimes cheaper than Amazon (I just picked up a new release paperback at nearly half off at DB; Amazon offering no discount) but they also enable one to purchase books that you cannot otherwise get. Books/authors that are only published in one country and not another, for example; you can also beat release dates this way too. (Often there is a lag between a book's release date in one country and another).

Two-day shipping? Postal systems must be geared up differently (maybe cos the UK is a mit smaller!), but over here it's one-day shipping (not guaranteed). Just kidding, I had a very enjoyable 2 months in SD (closer to Pierre) working on a film back in the 80s. I spent time in Sioux Falls on my days off and may have been throiugh Yankton, but it is so long ago I can't remember. I had always planned to return someday and see the completed Crazy Horse Memorial, but that's looking like an impossibility.

The climate at McMurdo is rather mild and Mediterranean-like, compared to what it is within the continent. ;-) I experienced a similar weather when I wintered at Dumont d'Urville, due south of Tasmania, some 30 yrs ago. It isn't that bad, except for the wind which can blow in fierceful gales. Also, there is plenty of time left for reading.

Yes, the change in climate (both metereological and culinary!) has been quite a shock. The local food is a revelation in the possible nuances of heat and flavour of chile (as a neophyte, I'm still being _very_ careful). On the haggis front, I shall have to find a recipe - I'm told that one cannot buy it in the US.
One of the fabulous things about this move is that, for the first time in 12 years, all my books reside in the same house as I do. There is something magical about unpacking books from their transit boxes and seeing a strange, cold, empty house transformed into one's home. Furniture and other things also affect the transformation, of course, but somehow (for me) not to the same extent as books.

That's a shame, Boldface. I only live about 15 miles away from your house - a midnight raid on your shed would have been a distinct possibility.
My map location is also slighty awry - showing me as living in the middle of a field. It's a great resource though, and fun to see where people live. I wonder how the map would look if instead of showing all of us it displayed all Folio members ?

Not cautious Quicksilver, realistic. We wouldn't be able to get the books to the truck fast enough because we'd stop every few seconds to admire a book we were grabbing and yelling over to each other to come look. I recall it was a bit creepy when I first found my house, and it was under construction - the contractor's truck was parked in the drive. A couple of year's later, the image showed the completed house, with one of our cars in the drive. Yeah, it's a bit creepy. So far, none have appeared with one of us standing on the lawn.

If you've not added your marker to the Google map of LT/FS peoples, please consider doing so. You will, however, need a Google account to add yourself to the map. You can be as precise or as general as your privacy concerns dictate as far as where you place your marker. County, town center or right in front of your house. It's up to you.

Actually postage from FS is not that bad I think, it's £4.50 per book. It's the prices inside Norway that are insane. A regular new release book here costs about £35-40 and I'm not even joking... It's one of the reasons I read in English.

The only tag near Shepherds Bush is outside Earls Court underground station.
Members can place their tag as near to, or far from, their actual location as they feel comfortable. The local police call box may be considered a safe place. I also suspect some location tags on the map are spam.

I did more reading onboard (of an evening) than I had in years because as the fleet are primarily postal/freight/passenger ferries and not fancy cruise ships there is no organised entertainment, nor TV in the economy cabins. I was on one of the larger, newer vessels but would love to sail on one of the pair of old ladies of their fleet. We passed them at sea and they looked superb. The Lofoten Islands was my favourite bit, and Tromso with that amazing Cathedral, but every port was different and the scenery ever changing but always magnificent. The cost was modest going off-season too. The food was delicious and made full use of arctic char, giant crab etc. The cabins were great too. So, I can heartily recommend it.

I used to think I knew where I was. I could always take a bearing and measure the span of my existence from the Holy of Holies located at 44 Eagle St, London WC1R 4FS.
