A very hard book to rate as the content becomes deeply disturbing. However, Boyne has masterful control of the storyline, as it moves between contemporary times and the protagonists childhood.
An interesting twist is revealed in the final chapters but be warned the content is not for the faint-hearted.

What a haunting book. There hours later and my tummy still hurts from the suspense of the ending.

The best book I've read in a long time! Hard to put down! It was the perfect balance to the rather dry tome I just finished about WWI. The last chapter was a bit awkward and odd, but all the rest was excellent and gripping, right from the beginning. The jumping around in time was smooth and worked well. And I liked the way he planted little hooks and hints to keep the reader turning pages. It never got dull.

Highly recommended!

Historical fiction: a re-imagining of what might have happened to Anastasia Romanov, youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II (last sovereign of Russia).
Quite different to the other Boyne novels that I have read.
Narrated by James Wilby.
