I liked this better than the first book in the duology, but since I didn't really care for the first, that's not saying much.

I would have liked to see a bit more in terms of motivation behind the villain's plans, since "evil for evil's sake" runs a little shallow.

I will admit that these are the only 2 Shannara books I have read, so I might be missing something, but if the other Shannara books are like these, I don't really understand the widespread appeal. Maybe at some point I need to read some of the earlier books in the series.… (more)

I listened to the audio version of this, and after finishing it, I am not sure I care to read (or listen to) the second book in the series.

I may give it a try, just so I can find out what happens to the characters, as this book ends very abruptly, and doesn't resolve anything.

I thought the writing was overly wordy and stuffy, and the plot was to a large extent fairly predictable.

It's been about ten years since I read this, but I remember it being little more than a somewhat entertaining cheap Tolkien knockoff.

Terry Brooks’s "The Black Elfstone" marks a thrilling resurgence in the Shannara saga, introducing readers to the captivating beginning of the "Fall of Shannara" series. As a devoted follower of Brooks's work since "The Sword of Shannara," I was both excited and curious to see how he would navigate the next chapter of this expansive world. From the very first page, it’s clear that Brooks has expertly reignited the magic that made Shannara a cornerstone of fantasy literature, inviting both new readers and long-time fans to embark on this fresh adventure.

In "The Black Elfstone," Brooks demonstrates his unparalleled talent for world-building, seamlessly blending the familiar with the new. The stakes are immediately apparent as a looming threat emerges, forcing the diverse characters into a struggle that tests their courage and alliances. The introduction of intriguing new protagonists and the return of beloved figures creates a dynamic interplay that drives the narrative forward. Brooks’s prose remains vivid and engaging, capturing the essence of the Shannara landscape while deepening the complexities of its inhabitants. The exploration of themes such as loyalty, identity, and the legacy of power resonates throughout, adding layers of depth to the unfolding tale.

As the opening salvo of the "Fall of Shannara" series, "The Black Elfstone" sets a powerful tone for the journey ahead. It offers a seamless blend of nostalgia and innovation, making it a fitting addition to the broader saga. With expertly crafted suspense and an emotional core that echoes through the ages, Brooks has laid the groundwork for what promises to be a compelling continuation of the Shannara legacy. For readers like myself, who have cherished this universe for so long, "The Black Elfstone" is a five-star invitation to dive back into a world where adventure and imagination reign supreme.
