About the Author
Phillip Kindred Dick was an American science fiction writer best known for his psychological portrayals of characters trapped in illusory environments. Born in Chicago, Illinois, on December 16, 1928, Dick worked in radio and studied briefly at the University of California at Berkeley before show more embarking on his writing career. His first novel, Solar Lottery, was published in 1955. In 1963, Dick won the Hugo Award for his novel, The Man in the High Castle. He also wrote a series of futuristic tales about artificial creatures on the loose; notable of these was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which was later adapted into film as Blade Runner. Dick also published several collections of short stories. He died of a stroke in Santa Ana, California, in 1982. (Bowker Author Biography) show less

- Philip K. Dick was born in Chicago in 1928 and lived most of his life in California. He briefly attended the University of California, but dropped out before completing any classes. In 1952, he began writing professionally and proceeded to write numerous novels and short-story collections. Philip K. Dick died on March 2, 1982, in Santa Ana, California, of heart failure following a stroke.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep by Philip K. Dick
Excellent exploration of what it means to be human. I appreciated how PKD was able to portray the androids subtly different with their inability to be empathetic. Also really impressed that Dick was able to elicit an empathetic response in me as a reader toward a spider.
I first read this novel when it was new, and I was in junior high. My memory was vague; I recall being both impressed and disappointed back when I was 13.
That's still about where I am after a reread provoked by watching the first season of the television series based (very loosely) on the book. I see several story lines; those are related but there's mostly nothing compelling or even important about those relationships. And for the most part they're unresolved at the novel's end.
Which leaves me where? I'm not sure. I can see why it's an influential novel, but on the whole I'm dissatisfied.
And I feel obliged to point out that one of the (TV) characters on this edition's cover is not a character in the book.… (more)

The book is, of course, vastly different than the movie. I prefer the movie but imagine many would feel otherwise. This book is far more than a bounty hunter chasing rogue androids. It is also philosophical, dealing with deep themes touching on personal identity and what it means to be human.
