About the Author

Ernest Miller Hemingway was born in the family home in Oak Park, Ill., on July 21, 1899. In high school, Hemingway enjoyed working on The Trapeze, his school newspaper, where he wrote his first articles. Upon graduation in the spring of 1917, Hemingway took a job as a cub reporter for the Kansas show more City Star. After a short stint in the U.S. Army as a volunteer Red Cross ambulance driver in Italy, Hemingway moved to Paris, and it was here that Hemingway began his well-documented career as a novelist. Hemingway's first collection of short stories and vignettes, entitled In Our Time, was published in 1925. His first major novel, The Sun Also Rises, the story of American and English expatriates in Paris and on excursion to Pamplona, immediately established him as one of the great prose stylists and preeminent writers of his time. In this book, Hemingway quotes Gertrude Stein, "You are all a lost generation," thereby labeling himself and other expatriate writers, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, T.S. Eliot, and Ford Madox Ford. Other novels written by Hemingway include: A Farewell To Arms, the story, based in part on Hemingway's life, of an American ambulance driver on the Italian front and his passion for a beautiful English nurse; For Whom the Bell Tolls, the story of an American who fought, loved, and died with the guerrillas in the mountains of Spain; and To Have and Have Not, about an honest man forced into running contraband between Cuba and Key West. Non-fiction includes Green Hills of Africa, Hemingway's lyrical journal of a month on safari in East Africa; and A Moveable Feast, his recollections of Paris in the Roaring 20s. In 1954, Hemingway won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his novella, The Old Man and the Sea. A year after being hospitalized for uncontrolled high blood pressure, liver disease, diabetes, and depression, Hemingway committed suicide on July 2, 1961, in Ketchum, Idaho. Short biography
Ernest Miller Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American journalist, novelist, short-story writer, and sportsman. His economical and understated style—which he termed the iceberg theory—had a strong influence on 20th-century fiction, while his adventurous lifestyle and his public image brought him admiration from later generations. Hemingway produced most of his work between the mid-1920s and the mid-1950s, and he won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954. He published seven novels, six short-story collections, and two nonfiction works. Three of his novels, four short-story collections, and three nonfiction works were published posthumously. Many of his works are considered classics of American literature.

Hemingway was raised in Oak Park, Illinois. After high school, he was a reporter for a few months for The Kansas City Star before leaving for the Italian Front to enlist as an ambulance driver in World War I. In 1918, he was seriously wounded and returned home. His wartime experiences formed the basis for his novel A Farewell to Arms (1929).

In 1921, Hemingway married Hadley Richardson, the first of four wives. They moved to Paris where he worked as a foreign correspondent and fell under the influence of the modernist writers and artists of the 1920s' "Lost Generation" expatriate community. His debut novel The Sun Also Rises was published in 1926. He divorced Richardson in 1927 and married Pauline Pfeiffer; they divorced after he returned from the Spanish Civil War, where he had been a journalist. He based For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940) on his experience there. Martha Gellhorn became his third wife in 1940; they separated after he met Mary Welsh in London during World War II. He was present with the troops as a journalist at the Normandy landings and the liberation of Paris.

Hemingway maintained permanent residences in Key West, Florida (in the 1930s) and Cuba (in the 1940s and 1950s). He almost died in 1954 after plane crashes on successive days; injuries left him in pain and ill health for much of the rest of his life. In 1959, he bought a house in Ketchum, Idaho, where, in mid-1961, he ended his own life.

Thought it important to read since I’m in Spain, but this “lost generation” very spare prose was more fun to read about than actually read. I understand the spiritual alienation with the US, being in the midst of the presidential election, and feeling despair over my email inbox filled with conniving lying attempts at winning voters to the dark side.

This is a re-read for me. I first read this many years ago, probably in the early aughts when I was reading all the books by the ex-pat writers in Paris in the 1920s. I remember I enjoyed it, despite my lack of interest in the subject matter, and since I'm rereading all my Hemingway books, this was next on the list.

Well. This time it is DNF.

On one hand, I'm impressed by the depth of detail that EH put into this work. It is truly a labor of love. But the cultural artifact he is describing is a century old. And at this time in my life I'm less inclined to spend time on books that don't have any intrinsic interest for me, even if I do like the writing style.

With all respect to Spain and its rich culture, bullfighting seems like a cruel anachronism. I'm more sensitive to things like animal cruelty, racism, sexism, etc. in literature than when I was younger. Three stars for the writing, the research, and the passion. But for me it's almost unreadable.

Strange. Minimal plot but very intriguing characters and dynamics between them. Sad at times. Pitiful. Like watching someone in a storm with no umbrella. Jake is interesting but understandable is his actions.

Such a beautiful book; it's a classic for a reason. There were few characters in this book yet it was so thrilling to read. It was not overly abundant in detail despite Hemmingway having a detailed prose, but Hemmingway is very conscious as to when to use detail. The allusion to Jesus Christ when Santiago had the Mast sat upon his back was something that had bugged me in the past (for I was a child when I had read this book, ignorant of Christian theology) but I understand it now. The dialogue was also very subtle and powerful. The internal dialogue and narration went back and forth and was so well structured.… (more)
