Anne McCaffrey (1926–2011)

About the Author
Anne McCaffrey was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts on April 1, 1926. She received a degree in Slavonic languages from Radcliffe College. She worked in advertising for Helena Rubenstein from 1947 to 1952. Her first publication was a short story in Science Fiction Magazine, and her first novel, show more Restoree, was published in 1967. She is a well-known author of over 100 books, mostly science fiction, including the Dragonriders of Pern series, the Crystal Singer series, Acorna's Children series, The Twins of Petaybee series, and Barque Cats series. She won numerous awards including the Hugo Award for Best Novella for the short story Weyr Search in 1968 and the Nebula Award for Best Novella for Dragonrider in 1969. In 2006, she was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. She has also written books under the pseudonym Jody Lynn. She died of a stroke on November 21, 2011 at the age of 85. Acorna, Becker, RK, Mac, Nadhari, and the two Wats splash land on a nearby planet and have to be rescued to the nearest Federation outpost on none other than Nadhari and RK's home planet. Where a mysterious illness is threatening all of the temple guardians. Acorna, of course, insists on helping heal wherever she can.
I found the story more consistent than the other volumes I have read recently. The temple cat theme is a fun one and it was great to see Nadhari shine. I liked this one enough to find a copy of the next volume (but check if it is at the library first).… (more)

Acorna has chosen her lifemate. Aari, the only surviving victim of Khleevi torture, has been reunited with his little sister Maati and his parents. Together with many more Linyaari they undertake a survey of the original Linyaari homeworld, previous to terraforming it back to its prior glory. Until people start disappearing without a trace, including Aari.
The writing took another nosedive. It's really not very sci-fi, but not too fantasy. The storyline was clunky in my opinion. I didn't enjoy it.… (more)

Acorna is out in space again when she intercepts a Mayday. Aari, Becker, RoadKill and the KEN unit are off to see if they can help when they encounter 2 Khleevi after the same wreck.
This story appealed to me more than the last two Acorna books. It felt more coherent somehow. I liked it.

Aari returns without his memories of Acorna. She tries not to feel ungrateful but something's not right.
This storyline is okay, not amazing but not clunky like early volumes about Acorna. I wouldn't mind owning the paperback but I am not going to run right out and buy it.
