This book for me bounced between awe inspiring, particularly about the descriptions of Artemis and a few of the characters (air shelters and fire proofing!), and painful for casting (Jazz is a Saudi but talks and acts as if she was raised in urban America) ,out of character decisions (Jazz is a patriot, really?) and plot devices (of course you have to go outside to turn on the air supply, of course people will die in exactly 60 minutes...).

That said I did like the story and the setting, as well as Jazz and am looking forward to the movie. This sounds like it was written to be a movie script and should make a fun and exciting movie to watch, where you expect the “put the hero in danger” plot devices.… (more)

“He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.”

LOG ENTRY: SOL 61 How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.”

Ha! I'm seeing a lot of people saw they read Artemis after adoring The Martian and being disappointed. I have a variation on that: I read Artemis after adoring Project Hail Mary. I wasn't disappointed in Artemis, but I agree it is just not as good. I'm still in the mood to spend more time in space and more time with Weir - I do plan on trying The Martian at some point.

Not my usual genre, but this book was so gripping that when my kindle battery gave out, I huddled on the floor next to the outlet to continue reading. Yeah, yeah, I skimmed parts of the explanations (the halves separating 180 degrees for the centrifuge blah blah) but the story itself was worth it all. (Yes, I'm still on vacation, but I don't think that would have made a difference!).
